GearsvsResistance

With the final release* in the trilogies out of the way for Resistance and Gears of War it’s come the time to look back and see which next-gen IP walked away with the prize and which has been shunted into the corner to lick it’s wounds.

Gears of War 1 was released exclusively to the Xbox 360 in November of 2006 while Resistance: Fall of Man was released exclusively to the PS3 just 4 days later on the 11th of November 2006.

Gears of War 1 brought the ground breaking cover mechanic to reality and consoles while Resistance had a 40 player online claim to fame. The games weren’t targeted at each other but fans on both sides had found a new hero and the fanboy wars began.

The original Gears of War has now sold just under 6 million units (5.95 million) since it’s release while Resistance: Fall of Man is on 3.84 million.

However this is where the games start to head down different paths.

Resistance 2 was released a few years later and has so far only managed to pick up sales of around 2.16 million while the Gears of War franchise improved it’s sales figures and moved over 6.12 million units.

Resistance 3 was released over a week ago and has had abysmal sales so far only moving around a quarter of a million units while Gears of War 3 has just released to massive critical acclaim and early figures are pointing at opening day sales of over 1.3 million units.

So in the end this close battle became a bit of a one sided affair and while a lot of blame can be placed on Sony’s lacklustre marketing attempts for Resistance 3 the reality is that Resistance is a good but not great shooter while Gears of War brought something entirely new to the table.

*Yes I know it has already been confirmed that we’ll be getting more Gears but it started as a trilogy and this story is now over

Resistance is a good series. A Change of FPS for Sony. While Gears entered with a whole new atmoshphere. I have played all games in both series and even though I’ve been a Sony fan since 96. I have to give it to Gears. Though I must say, if people were going to compare a game that was solid for the ps3. Resistance wasn’t the best choice, Metal Gear Solid or any of the GTA games. Sony was here before and most likely will be here after Xbox.
