Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is how long?

MGR

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is finally out this month, and for the first time in a long time I’m excited about a game with “Metal Gear” in the title – because damn can Platinum Games make finely crafted action experiences. If you’ve played Vanquish and Bayonetta, you know what I mean. Unfortunately, their games can be a little bit on the short side – and it looks like that’s the case with Revengeance too.

According to a a post on Gamefaqs (with some accompanying photographic evidence) the total playtime for Revengeance clocks in at just about 5 and a half hours of gameplay. Like with the excellent Vanquish, that number likely doesn’t include restarts, reloads, time spent in menus or cut-scenes.

Of course, that also seems like it’s a “rushed” playthrough, probably on easy, without much thought or skill – and you can probably expect your own playthrough to last around 8 hours. This news already has some Metal Gear fans up in arms, because other games in the series are considerably longer. What they fail to realise is that take away the 4 hour long cinematics and you’d probably end up with that much actual play time in any MGS title.

I know many of you don’t like spending your hard earned money on games that aren’t particularly long – but I have no problem shelling out for quality experiences; but what do you think? is 6-ish hours just too short?

Oh – here’s the game’s latest trailer, showing the Desperado Elite, the band of soldiers that blade-wielding Raiden will face throughout the game’s bananas plot.

DIRECT TWEET FROM PLATINUM GAME’S INABA. THE GAME IS NOT THIS SHORT.

“It seems someone posted their MGR results screen and that people (mainly in the West) are shocked it says the clear time is 5.5hr. Here’s the truth: First of all, cutscenes ARE NOT INCLUDED in that counter. Next: For every chapter you play in the game, it ONLY COUNTS YOUR FASTEST TIME. It doesn’t track your total play time. What that means is if you replay a chapter for 10 hours, but you finally clear it in a time of 10 mins. Only 10 mins will be counted. So please don’t get fixated on that end screen Clear Time being total game time because it is not. As I said, it is not how long you’ve had the power on playing MGR, it is a record of your best efforts playing the game. We came up with this clear time counting system as a way to fairly evaluate players. It hasn’t changed since Bayonetta. However, I will say it is really disappointing that people try to use a single screen in the game to try and create negative buzz.”

Basically this guy played ONE chapter, and it was about 5 HOURS LONG. Just had to send the message.
