Mass Effect 3’s ending DLC to make it all feel more personal

Mass Effect 3’s ending caused its fair share of controversy. Bit of an understatement – because it pretty much set the internet on fire. So much so, that Bioware took the vitriolic fanrage to heart – and is now busy readying up some DLC to try and fix the situation.

It’s worth noting – and this is good news for those who complained of Bioware sacrificing their art and vision – is that it won’t actually change the ending. Angry gamers, in general, weren’t especially upset by the sudden Deus Ex Machina that concluded the plot – but more by the fact that their 3-game’s worth of choices had little effect on the outcome – with the illusion of choice making the end feel far less personal than the rest of the game had been.

When the “Extended Cut” DLC launches later this year, you’ll now be able to see the consequences of your actions.

"We wanted to give the players a sense of personalisation with the endings," Mass Effect 3 producer Mike Gamble said at a panel at PAX East, says the PA Report. "Many people mentioned that some of the choices they made in the game are not necessarily reflected in the ending scenes. We’re definitely going to focus on things like that.

"We want to make sure that when you see the ending of Mass Effect, you now have the information and context to be satisfied."

Gamble says the DLC – which’ll be offered up for free at some point in the northern hemisphere’s summer – will contain a fair amount of content.

"It’s more than just a few cinematic scenes," Gamble said."We’re currently building it right now, our cinematics team is on it. Our writers are heavily involved. It’s coming together."

As to why none of this was in the game when it was release, Gamble was a little more elusive – saying that they didn’t expect people  to actually want the choices they’ve made over 3 games to matter. What?

"The dev team stands by what was released in the core product, and we’re very proud of it," Gamble concluded. "It was important though for us to listen to the community, and a lot of that feedback didn’t come until the game came out. Once we were listening we decided to include the extended cut. It wasn’t in the game because we didn’t know there was such a huge demand for it, to be honest with you."

So the DLC’s coming – and it won’t change the ending; instead it’ll fill in the gaps that were missing. Is it enough? Is it a step backwards? Are you looking forward to the DLC, or should Bioware have just left well enough alone?
