Let’s compare GTA V on PS3 and PS4

Breathe in through the anoose

We all know that GTA V is going to look prettier than a gift-wrapped Ferrari under your Christmas tree. After all, I’d be disappointed if the game wasn’t fielding some shinier tech when it launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. But how pretty does it actually look then?

About as pretty as your old high-school crush a few years after graduation and with a gym membership thrown in for good measure. Here’s a quick video comparing the PS3 and PS4 versions of the game:

And since some of you guys are locked out of YouTube, I made you a nice alternative link as well. It’s clearly way too early based on how nice I’m being:

I’ll be honest, I’m seeing some massive and not so massive improvements in the visual department. Character models look round about the same overall with some slight tweaking having been done, but it’s the environments, lighting and various other smaller details that have been amplified. More than anything however, this video reminds me of just how damn good the hardware of the previous generation was.

I think some amazing technical hurdles were vaulted over, with developers pushing those consoles to the bleeding edge of what they were actually capable of in the year or two that those systems began to wind down in. I’m not overly impressed with GTA V’s transition, but at the same time, the collection is more than just some fancy new textures.

You’ve got new content, new gameplay additions, tweaks and of course a new FPS mode which is probably going to induce all manner of nausea into our vertigo-stricken Zoe. And watching colleagues suffer is always a game-seller to me.

  1. This looks good, would probably buy it for PS4, IF I HAD ONE!?!?!?.
On a side note I need to buy headphones for the PS3 for online gaming, any suggestions?

Pretty well actually. I’ve had both. Since we’re talking console gaming (probably from the luxury of your coach) I’d go for the Sony pulse since it’s wireless. I was a bit annoyed when the.PS4 didn’t support it at release but after a few months support came and I haven’t looked back since.

Either follow the link Geoff posted or get one at BT games. If they don’t stock it, you can ask them to order it for you. If you shop around you’ll get one at a decent price. I just checked and on Takealot.com it is around R300 cheaper than Kalahari.

Roccat Kave. True 5.1 surround. It’s awesome. Especially paired with a nice Xonar D1 sound card. Dem vibrations…

Roccat got shit build quality and they have virtual 5.1 not true 5.1. I went through 4 Roccat’s Kaves last year eventually got a CM Storm Sirus 5.1 true 5.1 and never looked back. The plastic tears very quickly on the Roccat.

        Stay away far away.

I’ve had my Roccat Kave since 2011 and haven’t had a single issue… And I’ve gone through a lot of headphones in my life. So maybe you just got a few duds.I don’t know, experiences differ. Mine works awesome and I’d recommend it to anyone

I’ve got two suggestions. First, buy a headset that is PS4 compatible, and second, buy a PS4 because you are missing out on some serious quality. It’s far higher quality than you are seeing in compressed Youtube videos.

So many peas, it already looked gorgeous on the PS3. But now we have people walking in the desert on the PS4 @0:25

I’m with you on that one Darryn – the character models look ever-so-slightly better / shinier, but the environments, lighting, etc. have really been ramped up to 10. Those environments are simply stunning!

I’m definitely keen on this game. I may not get it on launch (Far Cry 4 launches same day and Dragon Age: Inquisition a few days later), but I will get it at some point on PS4. It’s just too good of a game not to have in your collection. And that FPS – that totally changes the look and feel, so it’ll be like you’re playing a totally new game.

I cant see the difference. It should have been 900p.

At least it still has the cinematic 30fps as the XBOX 360.

GTAV on PS3 was an amazing achievement but let’s not get carried away and rely too heavily on the comparison video. The real difference will be much larger because the video is only 720p, reducing the PS4 resolution down to the PS3 level. The game runs 1080p on PS4 while including all that extra lush detail at a very smooth frame rate.

The radius of detail is also much larger. For example on the PS3, the frothy waves on the sea only surrounded the player within a very small circular area. The froth on PS4 extends as far as the eye can see, at which point the froth gets too small to see anyway.

The author of the article fails to grasp that the jump is massive. The video only tells half the story.
