Is EA cashing in on terrorism with Bin Laden link?

Just before heading to cloud 9 last night I read about how EA is planning on releasing a special Bin Laden themed DLC for Medal of Honor and was immediately horrified. To me it felt like a cheap cash in and something that could be seen as hugely disrespectful to all those people affected by terrorist attacks across the world.

But as I sat and thought about it more I couldn’t quite come to an agreement with myself on whether this would actually be a bad thing or not. It’s not like there isn’t already a fair share of Hitler themed games and while they are all banned in Germany it hasn’t really rattled anyone else’s cage.

Bin Laden’s atrocities are also well known so it’s not like EA are making a martyr out of some obscure terrorist so is it that bad?

In the end though the actual DLC is even less offensive than I first imagined, the DLC named Zero Dark Thirty will give players two new maps which are tenuously linked to the search for Bin Laden and will not include Bin Laden himself or the Pakistani compound where he was famously killed at.

The DLC is actually a tie in to a movie of the same name, which is possibly more exploitive?, and EA have even said they will donate 10% of the sales of the map pack to charities that support US veterans of the war against terror.

I have to say I’m still not comfortable with the idea of giving Bin Laden any more coverage than he has already received but I would be very interested to hear what you have to think about it.

Has EA overstepped a mark or is this just one side effect of bringing gaming into the mainstream?
