Another year, another round of football games. Traditionally, the more mainstream FIFA from EA obliterates Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer at retail. Fans and purists will tell you that PES is more of a football simulator to FIFA’s more arcade stylings, but FIFA players will retort with “licenced teams, bro,” or “bugger off, I’m having fun…so NYAH!”

It appears lots of virtual football players are indeed having fun, because FIFA is once again wiping the floor with Pro Evo when it comes to sales.

"When you look at Pro Evolution Soccer versus FIFA, only five years ago in the UK PES was outselling FIFA. On its first weekend like-for-like we’ve just outsold PES by 25 times, “ claimed EA Northern Europe boss Keith Ramsdale to Gamerzines."That’s a sign of the momentum and the fan base and community behind FIFA, and let’s be clear, an absolutely kick-arse game. It’s unbelievable."

FIFA isn’t only giving PES a whipping at retail, but in critical acclaim too. FIFA 12 is currently enjoying a Metacritic average of 91, to PES’ significantly lower 78. Have you played them both? Which do you favour? Seeing as I’d only use the discs as coasters, I have no kick in this fight.
