Dead Space 3 will be a Quad-A game

I love the Dead Space franchise, most probably because it filled in the survival-horror gap that Resident Evil left when it opted to be an all-out action experience. Unfortunately, Dead Space has mostly done the same now – though Visceral maintains that Dead Space 3 will scare the pants off of you. There’s a lot of pressure on Visceral to deliver – and that pressure’s just been increased, because Dead Space 3, says executive producer Steve Papoutsis, is going to go beyond being “triple A,” by being Quad-A. Wait…what?

Triple-A is usually the designation given to games with high production values and enormous budgets – but Visceral wants to push the boundaries.

“We want to excel. We want to deliver a game that’s quad-A, that’s beyond what we’ve done before,” Papoutsis said to CVG.

“A lot of people say ‘triple-A’ and that’s kind of become the norm, with all the ‘big triple-A games’ yadda yadda. No. We want to go beyond triple-A. We want to push to the next level. We’ve taken up just saying ‘quad-A’ all day.”

This is, of course, just hyperbolic marketing fluff – and though I expect Dead Space 3 to deliver the goods and be a pretty damned satisfying experience, but this “AAAA” stuff is just going to create false expectations, and could end up biting them in the ass. It could also just snowball outof control, with each studio trying to one-up the next, adding on superfluous letters willy-nilly until we’re all expected to believe that  the next modern combat manshoot simulator is a AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA title.
