I was in a meeting yesterday talking about what titles I think are going to blow people away this year and the one (of a few) that came to mind was Call of Duty: Ghosts. Now I had no real insight into why but it was just a gut feeling and now a press release has landed in my inbox that makes this look more likely.
The press release is about the dynamic maps in Call of Duty: Ghosts and it goes something like this.
As an example of just one of Call of Duty: Ghosts’ new dynamic map events, Free Fall drops players into a shattered skyscraper on the brink of collapse. Sideways staircases climb into the night sky, elevator shafts run along the ground, and what were once windows now form a terrifying glass floor, hundreds of feet above the city streets. Free Fall’s close-quarters combat and frenetic action are then thrown into overdrive as the ruined skyscraper continues to fall throughout the match. With every drop, the accompanying shockwaves cause further destruction, disrupting sightlines and constantly evolving paths and chokepoints as the map changes in real-time.
With the core of Call of Duty being as solid as you get really I’m really excited to hear that the developers are putting more effort into adding new features into all the other parts of the game.
The idea of a map constantly changing is fantastic and will hopefully cut down on the number of campers who hide near choke points. However how it all comes together is the key and whether or not it will be random or linear. I’m guessing it will be linear as the idea of a totally dynamic multiplayer map could be too stressful on the console hardware and bandwidth.
And instead of just leaving it there Activision decide to be idiots again and announce that Free Fall will be an exclusive pre-order map. When they did this last year for NukeTown 2025 I said it was a stupid idea. I also then predicted that the map will become available to everyone, which then happened.
And this year again I predict the exact same thing will happen. The pre-order guys will play Free Fall by themselves for a few weeks and then the rest of the mob will be allowed in. I personally see this as fragmenting your user base and not rewarding the core players. But hey I don’t make a billion dollars in 6 days so what do I know.
