Just a few months ago we told you how Mojang’s cultural phenomenon Minecraft had surpassed 35 million copies sold, with 14 million of those copies on the PC alone. Mojang has now announced that it has sold 12 million copies just on the Xbox 360, making it one of the most popular games on the platform.
“Just in case you were one of the six people on the planet who didn’t know this already: Mojang’s "Minecraft" is kind of a big deal,” says Microsoft. “In fact, the critically acclaimed "Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition" just crossed the 12 million sold mark — making it one of the most successful Xbox 360 games ever.”
"It is pretty amazing! I remember when we started talking about sales numbers that we would be super happy to sell 1 million copies," said Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan of the Xbox sales in an interview on Xbox Wire.
"That would have put us on par with BF1943 and Castle Crashers, which both are awesome games, so that was something to aim for. We never even dreamed of selling 12 million," he added.
The console versions of the game are a little limited in scope when compared to the granddaddy PC version – and that’s the reason “bigger worlds” are the most requested features for them. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to jump in on a “next gen” platform if you want that.
“…bigger worlds would require the guarantee of a hard drive on each 360; since not all 360’s ship with hard drives that makes things tricky. Luckily, on Xbox One, that’s not an issue, “ said Kaplan.
And I still just don’t get it. Well, I understand the appeal. My own kids are all veritable Minecraft addicts and while it’s cool to see the stuff they’ve built, the game’s just not the sort of thing I enjoy.
With just the Xbox 360 version generating $240,000,000 in revenue that gets split between Microsoft and Mojang. one has to wonder if Notch has softened on Microsoft at all. He’s said before that he’d rather not have Minecraft running on Windows 8 than be a part of the company’s destruction of the PC as an open platform.
"I’d rather have Minecraft not run on [Windows 8] at all than to play along," he said before the operating system launched.

Minecraft truly deserves the amount of sales it gets, a fun filled game limited to only your creativity.

I was addicted, badly. Built railroads kilometers long deep in the earth mining diamonds. It’s go a certain charm to it, especially survivor mode. But don’t get sucked in. I haven’t played it in a long time but I know if I start again I wont be able to stop.
