Virtual reality is the real next-gen

With Sony’s PlayStation 4 first out of the announcement gates, it’s safe to say that the next generation is coming soon; but according to Oculus Rift CEO and founder Palmer Luckey, that’s not the next-gen you want, nor is it really next-gen. Luckey believes that the Oculus rift is the real next-gen.

“We do think that this is the next generation of gaming,” Luckey told VG247.

“Right from the very beginning of 3D games one of the goals has been to make a virtual reality, to make you feel like you’re actually present in the world. That’s really what first-person games are meant to do. I think that virtual reality – it’s very clear that people want this. They see it and they say ‘This is something I want; I want to be in these worlds’.

“There’re other potential paths to next generation gaming, like people say ‘Mobile is the next generation,’ or touch or social – but you don’t see people saying ‘Wow, all my life I’ve always wanted to play a social mobile casual streaming game with microtransactions.’ But what they do say is, ‘I want to play a game in virtual reality’. And that’s why I think this is getting so much traction, and why it will really be a next generation gaming device.”

He doesn’t seem particularly enthusiastic about the PlayStation 4; largely because it doesn’t feature VR, and he’s unabashedly biased.

“Maybe it’s the right path for them. I wouldn’t have gone down that path because I’m a VR enthusiast, I wanna make virtual reality happen,” he said.

“So in terms of have Sony gone down the wrong path in terms of my point of view as a VR enthusiast? Yeah, sure, but that’s because I’m a nut that loves VR so anything that’s not VR is going to be a mistake for me.”

Virtual Reality has come and gone as a gimmick so many times in the last few decades; is the technology finally at a place where it becomes feasible?

NO. Lawnmower Man will not be here any time soon. I am only interested in a holodeck where I get to pick the attractive ensigns on board my ship to walk long moon-lit evening with… Mind you, the Virtual Boy was a HUGE success. Never has a single device managed to screw a concept, and my eyes/brains, than that red pile of vile.

    Meh!

All I care about is STORY… GAMEPLAY… Non-Stagnant Characters and a game that isn’t over in 2 – 4 hours – and in that order. Virtual Reality has always struck me as an unnecessary venture. Immersion doesn’t come through technical wizardry, immersion comes by capturing your imagination.

Shucks the most “immersive” game I’ve ever played was an old ASCII RPG game called Omega. In that game, your character was a dot. Yes.. a dot.

But my fine Banana there be the problem. Kids these days are getting spoon fed everything. There isn’t much imagination left in this world. It’s only us old time gamers that knew what pleasure there was in seeing a dot move from one point on the left of the screen to another point on the right side of the screen. Or heaven forbid where we actually have to type our commands to progress in the game and still spend hours upon hours on it. (And not just because you type with one finger and misspell almost every word)

VR is still way too far away to be feasible. Way too clunky and expensive to include in next-gen.

It would drive up prices on an already expensive system. Just not worth it

O rift will be around R3000. That is the same price as a good screen, so not expensive.

Fair point. But, I don’t know about you but try imagine gaming with that thing on your face for 2 hours. Sweat in your eyes, running down your face. Not to mention the pain it will cause in your neck from the extra weight. No thank you lol

We have no idea how comfy it will be until we try it 😛 Soon as it hits the market I am getting one. My game cave is climate controlled, so I am sure sweat will not be an issue.

In all seriousness though, it’s cool and all but simply doesn’t grip me. Give me a holodeck however and we can talk again 🙂

There is so much negativity surrounding this despite all the good press. I understand that pre-release press is often biased and more positive than it should be, but I do get the feeling this is going to be insane. I will join @uberutang:disqus in buying one when it is released. I think its the next step.
