The PlayStation 4’s real competition to come from Samsung?

Forbes Magazine has been around for a very long time. They are renowned for posting their yearly billionaires list and generally covering things that we mere mortals could only ever dream about. But it seems that they are also human and have made a momentous cock up right here.

According to an article on their site right now Sony’s next biggest challenge isn’t going to be coming from Microsoft, or Nintendo, or even Valve with their on again off again Steambox.

No the new gaming powerhouse on the market is Samsung… and no Samsung aren’t making a gaming console but rather have released a gamepad for their Samsung Galaxy S4 phone…

SamsungForbes

Okay stop laughing this is serious business. These guys wear suits and stuff… So what awesome games is the S4 going to be launching with that is making Forbes think they are gunning for PlayStation?

"The company had a game arcade section set up for press and attendees to gets hands-on time with the new smartphone playing games like Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 and Electronic Arts’ Real Racing 3.”

SamsungController

It’s launching in May with 8 games… and will be compatible with 80 current games in the app store.

Okay I’m done… let us know if you think PlayStation should be worried about this new attack on it’s space?

I’m not so sure that they made such a mistake with this prediction, think of how much the gaming space has changed since the introduction of mobile gaming and $1 games. While Sony might not have direct competition from Samsung, the masses might gravitate more towards smartphones for casual gaming than buying a dedicated system.

seriously? It’s still a handheld. If anything it would be a contender against other handhelds.

While I guess this is kinda cool, for the price of an S IV I’d much rather buy myself a next gen console or buy a current gen one and actually save on cash.

Smartphones are not meant to be hardcore gaming platforms

There is one main reason why a handheld smartphone will never be able to compete with the console market. Forget about anything else. The main reason is…..

    Hard Drive space.

Sorry. But Unless you can have something like 500GB+ on your phone (and not just USB type storage but proper fast access HDD space) it will never work. Yeah you can have your cutesy fun games (Sonic etc) and some fun FPS shooter style games. But huge AAA games are going to be a huge problem as the devices simply don’t have the storage capacity that the bigger consoles have.

Have you played Chaos Rings or DrakeRider? not to mention the upcoming camaflouj.amazing games that are not that big. but even then 64 gig is quite alot to manage a AAA game. even conduit that was on the wii is on smartphone now

The problem isn’t that it isn’t possible.

But at only 64GB of space you are going to run out very, very quickly.

A Playstation or Xbox is capable of handling many, many games. Without constantly needing to install or uninstall constantly. Simply because they can run from disk as well as HDD.

A smartphone would eventually suffer an issue where you run out of space and you will have to start removing games to install new ones and vice versa if you want to go back to your old games. This is what I meant.

It’s possible to run a few good AAA games on the device yes. But at some point it’s going to become impractical.

Definitely . At some point you are going to have to manage your installs. probably on the PC or cloud. but it is possible and the space of a mobile will increase a lot, with the way current technology is going, won’t be long before we get a TB phone. and look at project shield, mobile devices has a lot of potential. If we have AAA games + the ‘millions’ of casual games on the Play store, we could have a behemoth on our hands … but that won’t be any time soon

All valid solutions. But I don’t want to have to manage my installations via the cloud or PC if I have a mobile device or console.

            The reason being that
            a) SA internet is teribad and would be horrid trying to run a game through the cloud
            b) Needing to connect my device to PC just to manage my games? Well then I’m simply going to use my PC for gaming or buy a console which don’t need to manage game content so badly.

I’m not saying it’s impossible or a bad idea. Not at all. I’m simply pointing out why it wouldn’t (in it’s current state) be a threat to the console market.

It’s 2 very differant markets that are being targeted by these 2. Consoles more for the “core gamer” and smartphones more for the “casual gamer” with a bit of core gaming thrown in, in the hopes it will attract more core gamers.

But they won’t be direct competition, nor will they eat in to eachother’s markets due to the fact that it’s such a different market on either side of the fence

Yes I can see this happening, although not to the PS4, rather Sony’s handhelds, which I don’t even want to own. This is just another contender in the casual gaming market and nothing else. It’ll probably also last for about 3 months after the launch.

I actually think they might be onto something. The whole technological singularity thing is coming, that’s for sure. Just consider the increase in power phones have seen in the last 4 or 5 years. Soon you’ll be plugging your phone into your TV (or even streaming it wirelessly) and enjoying AAA games with all of the bells and whistles turned on.

Sure, there will always be a market for a dedicated console and a dedicated computer, purely from a processing power perspective, but soon smartphones will have enough processing power to allow the majority of users to use them for the content they want.

well I’m ADDICTED to chaos rings on my S3. I pay full price for some of the games and they are not cheap, and many people buy them too, so I’m sure there is some good revenue in that not to mention the ease of publishing on the Play Store. the quality is AMA-ZING!! but I’m not sure if it rivals a console though …. but mobile devices are becoming stronger and stronger and they are taking quite a nice junk of the market.

Nah, Playstation 4 should not be worried. People easily confuse 4 or 8 core ARM CPU’s with the stuff you get in PC’s and consoles. Although the development in the mobile space is impressive and growing rapidly, we are still far far away from phones running Crysis 3 at current console quality and performance… PS Vita… They should be worried….

This article makes me realize that it’s funny how people will spend R8000 on a phone without thinking twice, but moan at the possibility of PS4 costing R6000…. Human logic not always very logical is it…

With enough capital I would’ve built this controller at least 5 years ago. There were some decent games out there but the phones buttons never worked for it and the N-Gage proved that trying to have best of both didn’t work. A clip on controller just seemed obvious. Back to the question: In a pure numbers game which is all these suits care about then MS, Nintendo and Sony might lose a small percentage of the casual market, but with that controller I don’ think much. If it were me I’d have an additional battery on the controller and have a better shape. The phone would clip onto the gamepad, not slide into it so I can play anywhere.
