As much as I love playing a new game, I also love going back a few years to get a little retro love. Dating your mom is besides the point, but this also applies to gaming. Unfortunately, I can’t jam Crash Bandicoot or Nuclear Strike on a PlayStation 4. Not right now that is, as plans are in place to not only bring those games to a new platform, but to throw in some HD love as well.
Insider Ahshan Rasheed, who happens to have a solid record so far with these leaks, revealed a few more rumours over on twitter. Take it with a pinch of salt as usual, but I like where this is going:
Be excited: 1. Local PS2 / PS1 support on PS4 w/ native 1080p rendering for select titles. 2. Bluray+Media Player updates
— Ahsan Rasheed (@thuway) March 25, 2014
3. VR demos from at future events 4. PS4 exclusive game stuff 5. PlayStation Now launch
— Ahsan Rasheed (@thuway) March 25, 2014
@reptilescorpio Number 1 I’ve known for a good minute, but software is still buggy and not every game works. Please be excited.
— Ahsan Rasheed (@thuway) March 25, 2014
1080p upscaling on classic games? My body is ready to return to an era where fingers on characters were a mere pipe dream. PlayStation One and Two games making a leap over onto the PlayStation 4 isn’t exactly new news, but the addition of HD support makes the retro idea sound rather tantalising.
Combined with PlayStation Now, and internet speeds permitting, and this could be a rather decent way to build up a library of classic titles. That, and I’m probably going to be playing Final Fantasy 8 for the ninth time in a row if this turns out to be correct.
Rasheed also spoke about the non-Facebook owned Project Morpheus, the Sony VR project which will taking a page out of the Oculus Rift playbook. Sony apparently wants to hear as much constructive criticism as possible from third-party developers, to make the product more enticing.
Devs I’m talking to really want to try Morpheus. Community feels like it is the best way to introduce VR to mainstream consumers.
— Ahsan Rasheed (@thuway) March 25, 2014
Oh and Sony has opened the floodgates asking for open criticism from third parties on Morpheus and what they want to see in a final product.
— Ahsan Rasheed (@thuway) March 25, 2014
If you are interested in how Sony is approaching Morpheus, they are designing it similar to PS4 and Dualshock 4. Taking developer feedback.
— Ahsan Rasheed (@thuway) March 25, 2014
Unfortunately, my idea to pair the unit with the PS Move controller and a new Leisure Suit Larry game has been shot down like a torn lubber. Still, if Sony is going ahead with these retro and future ideas, then they’re clearly focused on gaming first with the PlayStation 4.
Just the way that I like it.

Quick Q, I’ve bought a few PS1 games on PSN, does anyone else experience sluggish behavior on the PS3? I mean, Silent Hill Lags a shizz lot in the fog

Compatibility and emulators. Everything works!
Though finding an emulator can be a headache. I’m most upset with the fact that my Star Wars Pod Racer game still won’t work.

Just because they don’t look as polished and shiny doesn’t mean they don’t have stellar stories etc.

By that logic only the latest movies with the best CGI are worth watching. Old games are great actually.

By that logic you prefer the new Star Wars Trilogy over the original trilogy.

I’ve never played Doom 1 but from what I’ve heard it has a better storyline, so probably.

The old “quest” series (Police Quest, Space Quest,et al) were a real hoot for their time and you got an amazing sense of achievement when you actually got through games then… what about earlier Leisure Suit Larry, The early Westwood titles and things like the PS2 versions of Rainbow Six or early Sam Fisher stealth shooters…, Riven and Myst etc. etc. etc. the list could go on, but I have to disagree with you on one key point!!
The games were good…very, very good!!! Maybe not as pretty as today or as good sounding, but very very good nonetheless.
In those days when your only means of distribution was a physical medium, “patching” was something your grandmother did to a quilt and “DLC” meant “Development Life Cycle” and things like “always on-line” was something you expected your one ATM in town to be; games HAD to be very, very good, you couldn’t release the crap they do today and say we’ll fix it in the updates or DLC. Dev’s had to get it right first time or it flopped miserably never to be heard from again, so for those iconic games that made it they really were very good, they were pioneering, engaging, entertaining and they just WORKED, those that didn’t fell by the wayside…

As long as they dont just upscale the games to 1080p without actually making it look decent then im all game for it cause then id get allllllll the Resident Evil games and Silent Hill games. I miss the days of Resident Evil 2. That game was so beyond epic. I truly hope they HD the shit out of that game.

That was my first game on PS1 as well as on CD. So i know the feeling you felt when you power on that game. Damn… never forget that night. Me and my brother was sitting there excited and yet not sure what to expect from the game and it was raining like crazy outside and was super cold so we switched off the light to get the full effect. Best horror game i played. Id definitely pay full price for a remake!

I also played it at night for the first time with my older brother!! Maybe that is why I can’t play any horror games anymore?!?!?! Best thing I remember is in the sewer for the first time when you can only hear the dogs’ steps, you know there is something but your too afraid to go and see what it is… My brother ran into the T-Junction and got his ass handed to him by a zombie Doberman!!! Hahaha
