AdrianChmielarz

The former creative director of People Can Fly, Adrian Chmielarz, has caused a twitter firestorm to erupt after posting tweets claiming that the PlayStation 4 is 50% more powerful than the Xbox One.

What’s even stranger is that the tweet isn’t in response to a question or a line of thinking in a discussion, he just appears to think it would be a good idea to tell everyone what he’s been told

Obviously this started a huge online discussion that made its way to Neogaf where Adrian felt he needed to clarify his comments.

Here I am. So…

1. I am not doing a damage control, but I do want to clarify one thing. But first, yes, devs I know — and as someone has shown it before in this thread, some other devs already talked about it too — claim that there’s 50% speed difference WHEN DEVELOPING in cross-gen/next-gen PS4/XO games. So there we are, I said it and I stand by it. Notice: WHEN DEVELOPING. It’ll become clear in a second.

2. Will this change in the future? WIll devs discover some tricks to narrow the gap? Will stuff like XO cloud computing help? Hell if I know. Uhm, maybe? I know that devs — well, most of them — will do whatever they can do get you the best games possible. You’re going to see a lot of multiplatform games this next gen, just as you’ve seen them in this gen, so it’s in studios’ best interest that there’s no clear advantage in one version over the other.

3. Does it mean studios will cripple PS4 versions to match XO ones? Not really, do not underestimate the devs. Even if this happens, you will not know that and that’s okay. You’ve never seen most games in their most powerful form anyway (when we work on them on our ninja dev PCs in 1080p 120fps with all the antialiasings and stuff turned on for shits and giggles). But most of the time devs have a target and they meet this target. If it’s a multiplatform game, it’s designed with this in mind from the start. So maybe it’s not maxing out one console while going 100% on the other. Maybe it’s 100% on both, but they take extra time for super-extra optimizations on the weaker hardware to make sure things look the same as on the more powerful platform. Etc. etc.

4. So what is that “one thing” I want to clarify, that some people may consider “damage control”, but really is just an explanation. Someone mentioned Titanfall, which looks money and enjoys a great hype. Exactly. A great dev will make a great game no matter what’s the hardware. Current gen CoDs looks great and it’s 60 fps, on both platforms (well, and PC :). To most devs that is just impossible to achieve. And yet…

Think about it this way. X360 is faster than PS3. Not just easier to program on, it’s faster overall (although PS is faster/better in SOME areas). And yet no exclusive on X360 looks like The Last of Us. Halo 4 looks great. Gears blew my mind in 2006. And still, the best looking AAA game of this generation belongs to the supposedly weaker platform.

So if you think that the war is over because PS4 is 50% faster TODAY, then you’re delusional. This is far from over, and will probably never be over, at least not this upcoming gen.

So it’s taken some time to really get meaty but the next generation battle really kicks into life now.

I was thinking over the weekend that we used to always post comparison videos and screenshots between the Xbox 360 and PS3 and it was a lot of fun before the consoles started matching each other and the comparisons became null and void.

But starting from the first week in November expect those comparisons to be back and sitting here right now I have no idea how they are going to look. If the PS4 is 50% more powerful and easy to code for then it could quite easily steal the limelight from day one.

PC is a powerful platform for gaming, we all know that, the most powerful. Is there anything new you can tell us perhaps? As soon as there is some news about the power of a console, we hear the same arguments about PC. You guys have a powerful platform and Steam, great stuff….

This statement is really a moot point right now. You have a next gen console? No you don’t I am sorry to say. What you have there is a neatly packaged pc that uses a tv for a screen. It has been pointed out several times so far from E3 to PAX Prime and the consensus is that the console is in its last generation of being called a console.

We joke, but if MS rolls out Azure to SA it will change gaming overhere on the console front, forever. The ability to spawn a dedicated local server is going to be massive for mp games.

Forza5 confirmed that they have 24 player lobbies, with dedicated servers. If that servers are within 150ms ping… GOLD. If not… eish…

Well, shooters mostly and RPG’s, RTS games. They all work just fine with 150ms or less ping. Even BF on consoles worked ok at that. Not ideal, but you can still play and have fun. Racing games might be a different story.

Playing some COD on servers (PC) and not sure if local or not, but even that runs just fine. Arma3 and AA PG works fine up to about 300ms even!

Sitting on hardware that is many x more ‘powerful’ than the next gen consoles, yet very few games really use that raw horsepower ‘correctly’.

I am not disputing that now PS4 is cheaper but it could be that the price is a moot point if game developers force the Move onto you, it is of course purely speculation but if one game developer can get to incorporate good core move/kinect mechanics into their game then they are all going to do it even if just for a “phase” period.

Dude that will never happen. 99% of games are primarily designed for a gamepad, and if a game is Move only or Kinect only, then I just wont buy it.

I have yet to even see a game on the current consoles where I was like “Damn I just have to buy a Kinect or Move now!”. Seriously, look at this list of exclusively motion control required games and tell me which one is a killer app:

Unless you’re into dancing games (not judging), look at those review scores for the Kinect exclusives! worthless

I am just pointing out that we do not know what the next gen is going to offer and Microsoft’s PR bull stated that the reason for including the Kinect is so that devs could use it at will as it would be there on every X0. I am refer to for example dodging while using the gamepad for the normal movement but dodging left and right as you sit moves your torso in game. Now get that to work and throw it in to COD or battlefield. Suddenly if you want to play the biggest seller of the year you need a PSMove. I am not referring to casual Kinect games as you get them now.

I hear what you’re saying, I just dont think a developer on those triple AAA titles would be so dumb as to make it mandatory to use a kinect or move for their game, unless the entire market has one. Being able to lean left and right in a FPS is cool but not vital to the gameplay.

That said, I predict the Oculus Rift will be a huge game changer when it comes out. It will probably pair with the Kinect or Sony Move for body tracking and when that happens, pfffffft. take my cash gladly

I think graphically they are the same but the PS4 will be faster. At the end of the day it does not matter because devs will always program for the slowest of the 2 so therefore it will not matter much. In essence they are the same and performance will be the same.

Dear foxhound you have unfortunately once again failed basic comprehension, what you read was that you need more power to throw a X0 as it has a greater mass.

Kinda sad at the realisation that devs won’t make crossplatform games decisively superior on either platform. It makes marketing sense. But…

If the exclusives on the PS4 completely blow the X1 exclusives out of the water (RE graphics, speed, etc.) because of this supposed 50% more power, that might change a critical mass of consumers’ opinion in such a big way that devs are forced to not water down the PS4 multiplatform games as much…

    I am probably talking schit.

no one has mentioned that the ps4 GPU is where this 50% is coming from.

The GPU is the most important part. It take a ridiculously gimped CPU to bottle neck a GPU nowadays. Moreover, nearly all games are heavily GPU dependent now. Creating a games that has heavy CPU usage is a recipe for mediocre graphics on mid range hardware, PC or otherwise. Also the PS4 and xbox both have APU’s. AMD APU’s are greatly effected by ram speeds. You can compare diff speeds on youtube.

So what if we do this:
    1. Take a Chassis & pc hardware that’s the same as these consoles.
(Keeping in mind that we cannot mold a PC’s hardware to it’s enclosure – so it might be bigger)
    2. Run some solid benches.
    3. Compare the final results.

Some things that we should maybe keep in mind is power consumption? Don’t install a 1KW psu, but rather the smallest one you can for the hardware you are using.

I’d love to see those results. Can anyone enlighten me?

Might be because the PS4 is not thinking as much as the Xbox one. All that TV integration could be the reason.

Who the hell is this guy. He initially made a valid comment about what he had heard. That’s fair enough. But then he gets cold feet and rolls back with the biggest load of bull crap I’ve ever heard. He’s talking utter rubbish.

    (1) The reason why The Last Of Us was the best looking game this gen was because the PS3 is the most powerful console on paper. Sony’s decision to create its own 1st party studios enabled a way for them to guarantee full utilisation of the PS3 power, instead of relying on third parties who felt it was not financially viable to fully optimise CELL. Uncharted is another good example. Of course the PS3 has RAM issues that create severe data bottlenecks, but Naught Dogs games are not open world so they can get around that by splitting the game into small sections.

    (2) PS4 is definitely more powerful on paper and because the architecture is easy to programme and well designed, unlike PS3, that power will be easily reflected in the games, even from 3rd parties if they choose to do so. Open world games will run perfectly on PS4 due to the fast GDDR5 RAM.

    (3) Yes devs will learn to optimise the XB1 as time goes on, but the same is true of the PS4, so the disparity will remain. XB1 will struggle with open world games due to it having zero GDDR5 RAM for the GPU to access. It will struggle to load the DDR3 RAM fast enough with streaming content.

    (4) Yes 3rd party multiplat devs will try to make both ports equal to avoid customer complaints, so PS4 ports will be gimped to match XB1. But as mentioned above, Sony have wisely got their 1st party studios to push the PS4 to its full potential. This will create a huge disparity in quality, much larger than the current gen, and may create a consumer backlash against 3rd party devs in order to force them to stop gimping the PS4 multiplat ports.

    (5) And finally he insults our intelligence by moving the goal posts, claiming that when he stated PS4 was 50% faster, he meant it was 50% faster to develop for. That will be true as well due to devs having to code for the eSRAM and cloud processing, but no way did he mean that. Otherwise he would have had stated so. We all know that if you just mention speed alone it is assumed you’re talking about performance unless the topic is focussed in a particular direction. It’s the sort of lame excuse you expect from an immature schoolboy.

Conclusion: If you do not have the dignity to stand by your original comment and resort to a lie, you end up digging yourself into a bigger hole.
