2013 is shaping up to be an exciting year. And it had better pay off, because if weeks of rumours, confirmations, hints and clues regarding next-gen devices results in no concrete information regarding a Playstation 4 or Next-Box 360, it’s going to be the mother of all anti-climaxes. Strangely enough, those were the last words of my last girlfriend. Moving on, some newer details have emerged on Sony’s Playstation 4 console, details that list proper hardware, controller and account features. More after the jump.

Kotaku received 90 PDFs of technical documents and information, from a fellow known as Superdae, a man who somehow got his hands on two next-gen Xbox development kits that he attempted to flog on eBay. While the documents have no clues whatsoever as to when the PS4 will launch, it does have some concrete details on what’s inside of them.

First up, the guts of the console. Bearing in mind, these specs are for dev kits, which means that the final retail console could be slightly different when it is finally launched. Still, if the technology in this January dated dev kit is anything to go by, the PS4 is going to be packing some serious heat;

  • System Memory: 8GB
  • Video Memory: 2.2 GB
  • CPU: 4x Dual-Core AMD64 “Bulldozer” (so, 8x cores)
  • GPU: AMD R10xx
  • Ports: 4x USB 3.0, 2x Ethernet
  • Drive: Blu-Ray
  • HDD: 160GB
  • Audio Output: HDMI & Optical, 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 channels

The hard drive on the retail console will most likely be more substantial when it releases, while the two ethernet ports are more for sharing and testing purposes as it is a dev kit on offer. A headphone jack is also situated on the front of the console, but it’s unclear as if this is a final feature or just for dev purposes.

Moving on, the classic(ly old) Dual Shock controller is indeed getting a redesign. Although not too much of a face lift apparently. Sony is looking to keep the basic design of their controller intact, but with more modern ideas such as a capacitive touch pad, much like the one found on the PS Vita. The controller will still have the usual face buttons and analogue sticks, as well as better motion functions and most importantly, it’ll come with some rumble tech this time around. A “Share” Button is also on the new controller, while no mention of biometric tech is hinted at.

And here comes the final bit of information. It’s all to do with user accounts, as the PS3 is looking to switch away from single-user account log-ins, and on to “multi-user simultaneous logins”. Much like the Xbox 360, if more than one control pad is linked up the console, then more than one user may log-in with their profile. It’s a great function for parties and friends on the Xbox 360, but it looks like Sony wants to take things a step further with it.

One application mentioned so far, is that if players were to group together to take on an end-level boss, then all four players would receive special trophies when said boss was defeated. So if you’re a trophy whore, then the PS4 will have you sorted out at least. That’s all the details for now, but it’s starting to create a clearer picture so far.

And it’s a pretty one as well.
