Soon after Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was released ahead of the competition, a hardware problem became apparent, spawning the infamous red ring of death. It was a bit of a catastrophe, eventually costing the company over $1 billion to fix. Is history repeating itself? Sony’s PlayStation 4 launches first in the US tomorrow, and there are already an alarming number of reports of faulty PS4’s.
Both Kotaku and IGN have reported having hardware issues, specifically regarding the HDMI ports, rendering their PS4 units inoperable. That alone should set off alarms, but it apparently gets worse. A number of users who won early PS4’s in competitions have also had issues with their shiny new consoles.
Reddit user Aragon has detailed his issues in this thread.
When I turn on my console it just sits there pulsing blue. As far as I can tell it is supposed to turn white but it isn’t doing that. There is no signal on my tv either. I talked to at least 5 tech support people on the phone and 1 on-line. All of them but two outright refused to help me saying that the console is not yet released and they can’t help me. Two of the tech tried to help me boot it up into safe mode and that failed.
But he’s not alone. There’s a thread over on neoGAF detailing another user’s miserable PlayStation 4 experience, and another TwitchTV Stream of yet another early console owner experiencing similar issues.
Of course, any bit of new electronics is bound to have a number of faulty units, but the problem here is that the thing isn’t even out yet, and the privileged few who do already have units have had problems. This is a problem that Sony can ill afford. While Microsoft could swallow the billion dollar damage, Sony’s not in the same financial position to do that.

Not really a disaster:
So if your PS4 wont show a picture but the blue light pulses, it tries to load data from the HDD but cant..so it wont load into the OS.
Another problem? You cant load into Safe Mode with this corrupted OS data…
Fix?
1. You have to unplug your HDD
2. Boot the Console without HDD and it will load Safe Mode (white lightbar) and asks for a HDD
3. Turn off, plug in the HDD again and boot the Console again
4. PS4 will boot into Safe Mode again and you can recover now the necessary OS Data, PS4 will start again and will boot into OS again

November 14, 2013 at 10:22
The price of an HDMI socket is between R8 and R20. And that’s per unit. If you buy bulk, like Microsoft and Sony does, they are significantly cheaper. Since that is the going rate of an HDMI socket, your suggestion that they use “cheap” HDMI ports, is quite true. However, you are implying that due to the cheapness of the socket, they are not connecting properly. If this was indeed the case, each and every HDMI port in the world would stop working and we would be utterly screwed.
So if I ignore the fact that you are a troll and give you the benefit of the doubt that you have a valid argument, your argument suggests that your beloved Xbone would yield the same problem.

November 14, 2013 at 09:26
I think you guys should watch his Twitch stream… The guy F’d up his PS4… And this now becomes a “factory fault”… Heres a summary: Guy is streaming his broken PS4(He broke it by unplugging his ps4 while downloading DCUO which had stopped loading), complains to customer support for 4 hours whilst simultaneously being trolled by the people in his stream(Internet and all that), Ign decides that this is worth posting an article about. Finally through the troubleshooting in that 99% troll comments section he takes his HDD out, tries to turn on his PS4, gets an error, but at least it boots. He then puts the HDD back in and everything work. Guy then proceeds to pat himself on the back for being better than Sony Customer Support…. Then proceeds to once again break the ps4 by trying to download DCUO again. He is currently trying to fix it again, doing things such as turning on the PS4 while the hardrive isn’t screwed in, plugging in the hard drive while the system is running, failing at holding the power button the amount of time necessary to boot in safe mode, and much much more, all while ignoring the Twitch admin’s good advice. Then he finally listens to good advice, gets it working again, turns it off(to standby) and now it’s broken again. He’s now in hissy fit mode, all the while constantly switching inputs between hdmi and cable while trying to fix it. Thar’s your summary, have fun.

You didn’t read the source material did you? Nor did you read the IGN article, did you? All of the folks who had issues (that’re reported thus far), did so during or after installing the 1.5 patch.
You’d know that, if LG had properly read the source material and tried to inform people, rather than just hit the panic button. Then again, this isn’t the first time they’ve not exactly read and understood the source material either. And LG staff, before you open this particular can of worms, just refer to the article regarding an American town near Newtown CT, where they were doing a violent games buy back.

You buy smart man, if you do, a PC can last 4-5 years, with slowly reducing graphic fidelity. Your games will look pretty much the same over that time, much like consoles. Then, you upgrade, and BAM its beautiful again. It’s actually not as bad as even I make it out to be.
It IS more expensive for the hardware, but games are super, super cheap (specials, steam, humble bundle, gog etc.) so it evens out.

Latest version of PCI Express is 3.0, but studies have shown that we’ve only just begun saturating the PCI Express 1.0. So, 2.0 is still very very much relevant.

There are also some very compelling titles that don’t make it to console either, so there’s give and take there. And as ToshZA stated, you don’t have to upgrade your PC every time a new game comes out, hell, if you’ve been using a PS3 or 360 for the past 7 years you should be used to running at medium/low settings anyway.

Yeah, ha’s the issue here. If it was already out, and there were a handful of reports, it would be meaningless. The problem is that there are so few in the wild, and a large percentage is already broken. It’s worrying. I hope it’s nothing, cos I have on pre-ordered…

Polygon gave it a 6.5 lol, they pulled no punches. Apparently, it’s easily the worst story ever made, and the MP does nothing new. The only real endorsement they gave was the aliens mode was fun. Beyond that, they even remarked at how much better BF4 looked (though, BF4 also got some significant criticism as well).

you assume there are few in the wild, but there weren’t just 3 review consoles were there? accounting for how many people got it early and didn’t say anything, and some of these companies most likely have several review consoles * how ever many companies received review consoles == more than a few in the wild. The only real issue is that Sony made the mistake of sending two faulty systems to 2 larger review sites… that’s a *doh*… we won’t know if is truly an issue until Friday/Saturday or later on.

This is exactly the same issue that so many people had with the Wii U (specially the folks who got it for a 1k) I wonder what is going on. HDMI isnt even new tech, it cant be dry soldering. So what on earth is it with these new consoles HDMI ports that keep bombing??

That why i am happy about the Xbox one only releasing next yeat Feb -ish( SA). By the time we get it most of the launch bugs would have been fix already. So it it worth getting a pS4 this year? I for one wont be happy if i t stop working days after u bought the damn thing.

November 14, 2013 at 11:25
Yeah, but I’m not really basing it on any concrete evidence. My prediction is pretty much a sellout of all next-gen consoles over the Festive season. With the next batch of consoles arriving in Feb/March, I think they will first aim to replenish the sold out stock before rolling out in more countries.
The other indication is that SA wasn’t part of the initial launch line-up of 21 countries, which Microsoft reduced to just 13. So now the 8 countries removed from that list will probably get the console before us. Unless they decide to include those 8 countries and SA in the second launch tier.
Again, don’t take this as fact. We might get lucky with an earlier launch, but I don’t think SA is high up on the Microsoft priority list.

It is alarming, but premature imo. We need to give it some time until the bulk of launch day consoles have seen some use and there are comparable stats. If 10 consoles are in use, and 5 broke, yes, big problem…. If 10 000 are in use, and 40 broke, not a problem at all….. You only hear about the broken ones….

Well it’s currently working for me, and I won’t be unplugging it. lol I did hear, though, that there is a way to fix the pins. Whether or not you’ll need to disassemble the system is unknown to me. All of that said, I paid $40 at Gamestop for a protection plan. So if anything happens that is non-accidental, They’ll hand me, or ship me a new one, and if they can’t, Sony will.
Brian Murphy
November 17, 2013 at 10:44
Yeah Kotaku updated their article about their issue, apparently a metal pin was bent slightly upwards, and the Sony guy just used a pin to gently bend it back.
Though, if yours is working fine, then that kind of eliminates this issue for you.

Just checking in to say that I received my “Play the Future” PS4 from taco bell last night and it’s literally a brick. Just flashing blue (instead of booting to the white light). I called PlayStation technical support and they were less than stellar. I ended up using the online chat function to set up a return for maintenance order. I was supposed to get and play early, now i probably won’t get it until late December. But, I guess free is free… still sucks…

Early adopter blues I’m afraid. I always wait for a good while before buying new tech, so the kinks get ironed out. Still a big worry though, however these units might be preproduction for journos etc so it might not be as serious as it sounds. Fingers crossed!

I cannot play online. BF4 offline is ok. CODG won’t even boot to the menu without crashing. I preordered day one, as with every playstation that has come out, even got the ticket for the first system being sold at my local gamestop. Im starting to feel slightly irritated. I know these things are never smooth in the beginning but come on, I just want to game at least semi properly! I can’t tell if my Ps4 is partially bricked or if its the network. February 10, 2014 at 17:01
In actuality, I don’t believe many of these were actually bricked units. It was a case of the HDMI being unable to properly auto-detect the connection- a compatibility issue. For example, my friend who bought his after me was freaking out because his power went out, and when the power came back on, he wasn’t able to get a picture. I told him to try hooking up to a different tv. He did, and he had picture. He messed with the settings and hooked it back up to his tv. No problems every since.
I think a lot of these “bricked” units weren’t even that.
