Bloodborne TOH 1

Bloodborne is still a pretty damned good reason to get a PS4. It’s not a game for everyone, but if you can push through the difficulty and learn to find your zen and patience, you might find that it’s an incredibly rewarding game to play. It’s unique and gorgeous and still one of the highest-rated exclusives on Metacritic. The expansion has been announced and it seems to be answering some player requests without giving too much away.

Speaking to Gamespot at Tokyo Games Show, series producer Masaaki Yamagiwa explained that while you won’t need to have finished the game to access the DLC, you will have to progress through the game to a certain point to get there. As such, when the area first becomes available, it might be a little harder than recommended for the player to explore, but it should be about on par with the difficulty in the latter part of the game.

There are a bunch of new weapons and armor sets in the DLC, mainly because that’s what fans were asking for.

I don’t know if this was the most common opinion that we got, but we did hear a lot of people saying that they wanted more weapons. So, we definitely wanted to add more weapons for the DLC. People also wanted more ranged weapons. There were a lot of weapons where it was just a cutting, regular slash action. For the DLC, we added things like the bow to allow for more ranged attacks.

So, while the extra weapons and new areas to explore are interesting, the real focus of this DLC is to expand upon the lore of the game. While people have plenty of theories about the game, this should help clear a bunch of things up, while obfuscating a ton more.

The focus of the game is as an overall expansion. We want to expand the strategies players can use in battle–more weapons, more items, that sort of thing. That was our focus with the DLC. That said, the setting for the new DLC is a nightmare where the Old Hunters have been trapped. Among the Old Hunters are people mentioned in the main story; Ludwig is a character who’s mentioned in the main story. He is one of the Hunters trapped in this world. In that sense, it is an expansion of the story and you will learn more of the lore and mythos of Yharnam in the process.

[…] Our players are very, very sharp. I’m always impressed with the kinds of things they’re able to figure out and they’re able to discover. But from what I’ve heard from director Miyazaki, there are still some things that they haven’t completely grasped yet.

And we promise you that we have some very fun tricks up our sleeve for the final version of the game.

Bloodborne: The Old Hunters releases on 24 November and will probably lure a whole bunch of people back into Yharnam just in time for the holidays, perfect for some people’s emotional state during the surge in family time, right?
