What Remains of Edith Finch?

Giant Sparrow, the chaps behind the beautiful, surreal Unfinished Swan is busy on another game that they’re making with Sony’s Santa Monica studio – and it looks intriguing to say the least. It was originally announced at Sony’s PlayStation Experience event last year, but largely ignored as a result people’s insatiable desire for big blockbuster games. There’s a new trailer for the game, and I’m a little upset that I’ve paid What Remains of Edith Finch so little attention.

It’s a collection of story’s about the Finch family, played through a first-person perspective – and seems to be a rather macabre adventure game in the vein of something like Gone Home.

“Each of those stories is about the death of a different Finch family member and each is meant to look and feel different from the others, the way no two people in any family are alike,” says Giant Sparrow’s Ian Dallas.

“Which is why to start with we’re focusing a lot on the Finch family house where the game begins. As Edith, players will be exploring this house and eventually unlocking bedrooms for all the various family members. Inside each bedroom is something that tells a story about that person’s life (like a diary, or a collection of photos, etc).

“The Finch family house, by the way, is crazy. The family has been living here for the last hundred years and each generation adds on to it. By the time Edith arrives the house is an enormous artifact influenced by a range of eccentric, stubborn folks. Hopefully it’s also a place that comes across as believable and familiar. Our goal has been to make the house feel fantastical but at the same time like it was all made out of stuff you could buy at Home Depot.”

It certainly seems intriguing. According to Dallas, the game about death is “a surreal experience that’s grounded in a familiar world.”

It’s set for release, according to the trailer, in 2016. Watching the trailer gives me the impression that the game – if not wholly made for it – will support Sony’s Morpheus Virtual Reality headset. In fact, it seems perfect for it. This is the sort of VR experience I could get behind.

While I’m not usually a fan of this type of game, HOLY #$&% that looks interesting.

The title What Remains of Edith Finch? makes me suspect that Edith is actually dead (or dying) and you are walking around the remains of her memories and things will get weirder and weirder as you progress through the story and encounter old vague memories or the memories surrounding her death.

    I should really get a PS4 sometime.

If she was already dead wouldn’t the game be called “Where are Edith Finch’s Remains?”

For me the title seems to indicate the remains of Edith Finch are her memories, not the physical corpse.

This is why I disliked English in highschool.

What do you mean? I like showing others how happy I am when they’re unhappy to give them hope that one day they too can be happy. I’m a giver!

Interesting. I just finished an analysis of The Unfinished Swan’s soundtrack about a month ago.
