Maybe I’m naive, but I really expected Ultra Street Fighter IV on the PlayStation 4 to be a great port. The venerated fighting game made its debut on Sony’s PS4 as a new-gen exclusive, and with it being a port of a six year old game, my expectation was that it would not just be playable, but be the definitive edition of a game that’s been released a million times already. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s a terrible, terrible port.
Pro and not-so-pro players from around the globe have expressed their dissatisfaction with USFIV on the PS4, saying that the game has input lag, moves have been unintentionally nerfed, frame data is off and there are glitches galore. Even the menus are slow and choppy. Hell, the opening menu says “Press Start” when the PS4’s controller doesn’t have a start button.
These are the sorts of issues that completely break the Fighting Game experience – and it’s inexcusable. This would be relatively okay if not for one thing: This is meant to be the version of the game that’s used at EVO and other pro tournaments, displacing the old consoles – but there’s no way on earth the game is ready for that. It’s not even ready to be released.
Before you ask, no – the port wasn’t done by High Voltage, the folks who botched up Mortal Kombat X on PC. Instead, it was handled by Other Ocean, an indie developer and port factory that’s responsible for a different, yet also completely broken Mortal Kombat title: Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection. I own that, and I really wish I didn’t.
Here’s a look at some of the issues:
Sony’s trying to establish its console as the home of competitive Fighting Games, making this new port of Ultra Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter V exclusive to its platform – but it’s not going to win anybody over by releasing games that seem to have had no QA whatsoever. The preliminary matches leading to EVO start in about a month, so they have just weeks to fix this.

I dunno. Capcom never did a proper Street Fighter game after Super Street Fighter 2, the one that introduced us to T-Hawk and Fei Long. Street Fighter IV never got to me as much as I would have loved it to. And that Dural-esque final boss was the final nail in the coffin.

Bad ports of games that actually work before they’re ported are a cancer in this industry. For every one that’s done well, there’s another ten that are just a big “fuck you, give us money” from their publishers and go to show just how little they give a damn about what they’re publishing and their customers.
Guess how much this’ll affect the sales on SF V? Nothing. It won’t do a goddamn thing.
