Two new PlayStation 4 models are coming…

Ps4

The PlayStation 4 has been out for over a year and a half. It’s a rather nice machine (underpowered as consoles are), but it could certainly do with a little more storage space. Though you can upgrade the measly 500GB drive, unlike the Xbox One and even the Wii U, you can’t just plug in an external hard drive and keep on gaming, so it’s a constant balance of deleting games from the drive just so you can put more of them on. It’s a hassle. It’s one that would-be PlayStation 4 owners might not have to contend with. There’s a new PlayStation 4 coming. Apparently.

According to Dualshockers, the FCC has certified two new models of PlayStation 4. They’re likely just internal revisions – so don’t be expecting a newer, cheaper, slimmer version of the console just yet. What you can expect from one of those models though, is a larger packed-in hard drives. The new models are numbered as CUH-1215A and CUH-1215B, which all means very little to the end user – but the one that ends in B will be packing a 1TB drive instead of the piddle 500Gb that the PlayStation4’s had since launch.

PS4New

A recent Ps4 update helped a little, allowing users to back their digitally installed games to an external drive but makes no provision for running games off of said drive, which at this point is inexcusable because – as I’ve mentioned – even the Wii U lets you do that. There seems to be very little else different about this new model, save for the fact that it’s the slightest bit lighter – which we can put down to things like efficiency, and lighter, cheaper to produce parts.

The new 1TB model is likely to be announced at E3, but it does also mean that those hoping for a significantly cheaper, lighter and miraculously smaller one ala the PlayStation 3 slim may be waiting quite a bit longer.

I’ll probably get the Xbox One first. If and when I can afford it. First, graphics card for my PC. Then Xbox. Then PS4. But first I need to earn more money.

So. It’s pretty much all talk for now. XD

I need a new HDD. Looking at an SSD for OS and an extra HDD for the games. Unfortunately with Origin you can’t run games off a portable, because EA didn’t think that far. So internal HDD it is.
But that, too, is all talk at the moment.

          • Mossel

            June 2, 2015 at 11:32

Oh yeah! I wanted to ask you…what GPU do you have? Your screenshot of W3 looks pretty decent!

          • Captain JJ the_scarrrr

            June 2, 2015 at 11:35

R9 270x – mostly because of the decent price for what you’re getting.
            http://www.wootware.co.za/powercolor-axr9-270x-2gbd5-tdhe-oc-turboduo-radeon-r9-270x-2gb-gddr5-pci-express-3-0-256bit-graphics-card.html
But you can push for the R9 280x if you want, that thing is just over R3k now and it’s pretty bulletproof.

          • Mossel

            June 2, 2015 at 11:37

Yup, that used to be my number one choice a few months ago. Now I have my sights on that shiny GTX970…O_O It’s just so damn expensive!

          • Captain JJ the_scarrrr

            June 2, 2015 at 11:42

Agreed. That thing is looking so nice.
Granted I got my card over a year ago, so it should last me long enough still.

            June 2, 2015 at 19:17

That’s the best card of this gen, will be in my next build, the old HD 6950 is getting a little long in the tooth. When your GPU starts showing up under the recommended specs, it’s time to upgrade.

LOL. Because the remaster of Last of Us, Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy is any better? Both consoles suffer the remaster curse.

Of course, Sunset Overdrive was also a great game, Xbox only. So there are pros and cons for both. Both consoles right now lack console-making exclusives. Neither one wins in that department.

A 1TB 2.5″ drive is actually about R700 or so and a 2TB 2.5″ drive is about R1500 but that’s at retail pricing, wholesale they would be able to get them for less.

Remember console gamers don’t have 2 TB backlogs, most of us still buy the disc and then when we are done with the game trade it in to save on a new game. So the old game is deleted of the hard drive. I haven’t used 30% of mine and I have played quite a few games. Only constants on my PS4 is Fifa and Destiny, which I still play every night…

My beef is that it’s sold as an entertainment system. Not just a gaming device. If you want to use it as a real entertainment system as I do my pc, then 1TB just won’t do it.

Sure, but who is really going to use a console as an entertainment system? I don’t even see why one would try to do that. I have always either used a laptop or a PC, even these tablets aren’t close enough to my PC to warrant anything else than emails and word documents…

For the people who only have a console for everything. I know a lot of people like that. Not everyone can afford a laptop and/or pc too. If they really want to sell consoles as the complete package, then they’re doing it wrong.
I have a PS3 that I use as my blu-ray player and although I don’t really have games for it, I can’t see me filling it up easily. But my pc is full of stuff. If I had only the console it’d be pretty screwed without an extra portable.

1TB is still a bit behind the times though, considering the console is supposed to be an entertainment system.

They need to enable running games from external storage as a matter of priority. I got an Xbone and a PS4, upgraded the internal hard drive of the PS4 to 2TB but keeping it for PS4 exclusives (though not too sure about that now!) when games come in around 50gb a pop. Xbone for all it’s faults, just add external storage and job done. Annoyed the hell out of me having to remove storage from the PS4, the 500gb disk.
