I love the new generation of consoles. They are impressive pieces of machinery that offer fantastic gaming experiences far superior to the last generation. While we may debate which one is best down to the pixels and framerates, the sales figures certainly speak for themselves. The latest numbers are rather impressive, and more so when we compare to the announcement before.
Game Developers Conference (GDC) is underway at the moment and Sony took the opportunity to announce that more than 20.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles had been sold through. Remember, there is an important distinction between sold in and sold through – sold in refers to units sold to retail which may or may not still be sitting on shelves, while sold through means that the consoles were actually sold to consumers. In a prepared statement, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House said:
We are so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation fans worldwide, and we are truly humbled that gamers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play.
The last time Sony updated us on console sales figures was at the beginning of January when the total was 18.5 million units with 4.1 million sold during the busy holiday season. That means that during the period of the year when people have the least disposable income, they bought 1.7 million PS4s. It’s clearly an important purchase and a console buying decision that has become easier. People are happy to dish out the cash for a PS4 and obviously see the value of the technology. Well done to Sony – the PS4 “continues to demonstrate the fastest and strongest growth in PlayStation hardware history”. At this rate, it might even overtake the PS2’s success.

Hey, don’t get me wrong, I’m not against VR at all, I would just rather have them focus on actual games for the moment. If it weren’t for The Last of Us: Remastered the PS4 wouldn’t really have a decent exclusive worth playing. It’s an absolutely fantastic machine, and that should be their main focus for now.

I suppose the only downside of the PS4 being such a beast (in sales) is that it means a price drop won’t be happening any time soon 🙁 – meanwhile on the boner side, hopefully it’ll hit under R5000 sometime this year.
