No Man’s Sky treated like Sony first party title

No man s sky

First party titles can sell consoles. Bloodborne led to plenty of PS4 sales, Forza and Halo did it for Xbox One and everything Nintendo does helps to ship the Wii U. But not all exclusives are true first party titles. That’s not getting in the way of Sony giving their support, which is why the PS4 can be a godsend to indies.

If I had told you a few years ago that Mike Bithell and Sean Murray would be big names in Sony’s press conferences, you probably would have laughed at me. Now, they are getting tons of love and No Man’s Sky might just help ship consoles for Sony. They want to reward this, which is why they’re helping it go beyond the usual expectations for indie titles.

Speaking to MCVUK, PlayStation’s UK boss Fergal Gara explained the special relationship with No Man’s Sky:

No Man’s Sky has been treated as if it was from one of our internal studios. We have been working very closely with the developers and bringing it into our release programme as if we had made it. We are not going to treat it any differently and we are going to put the full weight of PlayStation behind it. If it all comes together as well as expected, it will be treated like a first-party release; it is not a self-published small indie title on the platform.

PlayStation has done so much to push indies forward. Some of them are offered for free or cheap on PS+ and sales, but it’s more than that. Games that would otherwise be overlooked are giving prime coverage on the PlayStation Blog and they’re talked about by the head honchos around the world. There’s an excitement for indie games at PlayStation, and it’s contagious, especially when it’s for a title like No Man’s Sky.

The day that a game gets made that evolves on it’s own with everything in it is the day any other games will be futile to get. No Man’s Sky is close to that.

Not to cause alarm or anything, but I suspect that the “game” will then be AI hunting humans. Skynet is coming, don’t support AI.

I suspect that it will actually be Ultron not Skynet.

Support AI, you robot overlords are coming.

I work with a lot of machines who do the thinking for you. Let’s just say skynet is some time off. Machines still can’t read a barcode if there’s a small scratch.

If I had to pick between indies and AAA at the moment I would pick indies.

Sony will be taking most of the profits from the PS4 sales of No Man’s Sky.

I think it’s being a profitable mind shift from Sony, the support of Indies will just mean that indies will gradually start considering PS as a viable release platform…. more games baby, who can complain about that.

I’m a fan of the indie support. Not all indies are 8/16 bit side scrollers. The Tomorrow Children, Ether One, Broken Age, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, The Talos Principle, Rime, WiLD, Hellblade… all impressive looking indies.

This might sound bad coming from my staunch support of (almost) everything Valve but after Sony payed off Ubisoft for shitty pc port of Watch_Dogs I have absolutely no interest for No Man’s Sky as I already am under the impression that Sony has some shady underhanded deal struck with the devs.
