Bloodborne’s success took Sony by surprise

Bloodborne is an incredible game – and it went on to sell over 1.2 million copies in two weeks- something the lacklustre, multiplatform Dark Souls 2 took two months to do. For a niche game on a single platform, that’s pretty darned impressive, and something that’s very definitely what you’d call a success. It’s a success Sony was not anticipating.

Speaking to MCV, Sony UK Chief Fergal Gara said the company hadn’t planned on Bloodborne’s runaway success.

It did surprise us, we had expectations to do well. We looked at the Souls series as a frame of reference, and we thought we could do better than that. We did – and then some. Relative to some of our sister territories, we were being quite ambitious, but even that proved to be conservative.

Why did it end up being so darned successful? Yes, one of the reasons is timing; there were few other great big games out for the PS4, especially not exclusive ones.

I think Bloodborne might have just landed just at the right time; it was a relatively quiet time, it was a very high quality title and a great platform differentiator for us. We were caught a little bit behind in terms of the volume, but we were able to chase it and maximise its potential.

Bloodborne is a vastly superior game to Dark Souls 2, and certainly deserves that success. It’s currently the highest rated new-gen exclusive according to sites that track that sort of thing.

Bloodborne was awesome, a perfect “gateway drug” to the rest of the Souls series

Agree. It feels like such a natural evolution from Souls. Very well deserved success.

I love stories like these for games that deserve it. Bloodborne is amazing, some might not like it but boy, the production value was astonishing. Every inch of that world was so detailed and rich with personality…I think FROM needs to get back into First Person dungeon crawling.

Bloodborne is VASTLY SUPERIOR to Dark Souls 2? What utter nonsense. I love Bloodborne, but this statement is crazy. DS2 has a 91 average rating and Bloodborne a 92. Hardly a chasm in between them. You can’t do a one-to-one comparison anyway, they are a generation apart.

Never understood the average rating of DkS2. I think it is too high.

I have to agree that Bloodborne is superior to DkS2, at least to me it is. I am not basing this on any score awarded to the games but the way it makes me feel.

With Bloodborne, I am looking forward to playing it at night, discussing various aspects with friends etc.
DkS had me constantly bugging friends to get it and try it out.
DkS2, I have started the game more than once on both PC and PS3 and it never holds my attention., There is something missing in it that I can’t put my finger on. (Maybe Soul)
