Atari predicts the Xbox will win the next gen race

With the next generation just around the corner it’s time for everyone and their dog to predict a winner in the upcoming battle. Most people have already taken Nintendo out of the race leaving it as a two horse race to flag.

Sony got out of the blocks first and in a big way, impressing virtually everyone with their plans but Microsoft will hit back soon.

However Atari Founder, Nolan Bushnell, believes Microsoft is going to take this generation easily and for one simple reason. It makes better software.

“I personally believe Microsoft is in a superior position, and the reason is Sony, whenever they change consoles, the software tools that they have are lame,”

“A lot of times in the past they were in Japanese; not well documented and getting the software development community up to speed…they may have been able to do it in Japan, but the American software community just says ‘Oh boy, what a pain.’ And a lot of people don’t realize how strong the software community is at making the hardware platform sing and dance.”

Personally I think he’s wrong, well not wrong just late. I think the Xbox won in America in this generation because it had better development tools and Sony has learned from that mistake.

With the rumours of the Xbox requiring an always on internet connection I personally see the next generation going to Sony.

Sony will take it, and well done to them. Just been reading what the PRICK of a director Adam Orth has been saying and it makes me sick. Fuck you microsoft, if you think liking having an always online connection to having electricity is correct you have lost one customer.

If the NextBox is always on the Sony is going to take it hands down.

    UNLESS:

Developers (EA, Blizzard etc) all decide this is the best news ever since DiabloIII, SimCity etc were all SOOOOOOOO well accepted, that they focus development on the NextBox because it’s in line with their business wishes.

That way they can say “Hey, we didn’t chose this. It was forced on us by microsoft”.

The perfect scape goat for all developers. A blanket excuse if you will.

Yeah ok. The NextBox is gonna win. Devs love always online!

Yes and since Atari is such a huge player in the console market I hedging all my bets on what they are saying. If he said North America I will have agreed, but world wide I don’t think so. If Microsoft do go the always online way (and I really do not see them doing it) it will be a slam dunk for Sony.

The Xbox will fail halfway through because it needs an update and realises it’s not online and so will simply switch off

I for one do not think MS is going to do always online, people should not listen to that poor-analogy spouting douche bag … it’s really not a feasible decision to go always online.

And Nolan can suck a pong…What’s up with all these industry ‘Professionals’ talking this way. Jeez …they need to represent the industry better. your comment was lame Nolan

I hope they have learnt, their (Sony) tools are horrible.

Microsoft, as a whole, has spent years documenting software development kits and over the last few years have gotten pretty good at it. (compared to most other companies) If they apply the same skills and knowledge to the Xbox dev kits I think they will be superior to anything Sony has to offer.

BUT, will that win the race? I doubt it. Through enough money at it and the developers will learn to use almost any tool.

He obviously did not see the PS4 announcement event. This time Sony changed properly and engaged with developers to create a console that they would like to use and develop on.

Anyways this always online thing from Microsoft will be a huge mistake if it’s true and will definitely not go down well with consumers. But whether it’s 100% true or not Sony now by the looks of it has a fantastic opportunity in this new generation fight.

Currently MS dev tools are years ahead of anything else, but it seems that Sony is really focusing on making life easier for devs. Lets hope they can close the gap.

      Why the downvote?

I work with multiple tools and MS tools are the easiest and nicest to work with. Try Embedded dev on microprocessors and then talk to me about dev kits. MS knows how to document and provide a nice working area.

Another thing that Mr Nolan Bushnell is forgetting is that Microsoft is killing off XNA in 2014, that’s that development toolset that was used for the XBox 360. Developers are turning their backs and running miles away from Windows 8, so if he thinks software will win the race I have a bit of a surprise for him.

I agree, it seems Sony has learnt from their mistakes and is going huge. Microsoft is just pushing more of their casual Kinect agenda. So if you like proper games that don’t need an internet connection constantly, you’re probably better off going with Sony next gen. But we’ll see.
