Windows10

Yesterday, after what seemed like an eternity of failed updated, errors and other issues, I finally managed to upgrade to Windows 10. It took 5 downloads of the same damned installation media, and many hours of trying, but I’m now on Windows 10.

FML
I even tried to update from the future!

I’m one of around 14 million people who’ve already updated to Microsoft’s latest operating system since its release on Wednesday – and I have to say, I’m actually rather impressed. It’s fast, slick and smooth – and barring some dodgy freemium nonsense – blends the best of Windows 7 with the best of Windows 8.

The biggest change, for those of us who play games on our PCs is obviously the addition of DirectX 12, which gives developers console-like, low-level “to the metal” access to hardware, which theoretically, should mean games made for the API will look and run better. I’ve not been able to test that just yet, bar for some early DX 12 benchmarks.

Most of my time, honestly, has been spent asking the new digital assistant Cortana stuff. “Tell Alessandro to get in the sea,” is something I’ve said just about every hour on the hour since upgrading, despite Cortana telling me that that function only works on Windows phones.

The upgrade is free for very nearly everyone, which means there’s really very little reasons not to upgrade. Especially if you want to tell Alessandro to get in the sea.

Have you upgraded? What are you experiences, and what do you think of the new OS? Is it amazing, or should it do what I keep asking Cortana to tell Alessandro to do?

Okay. Okay. I have a serious question. I have a HP gaming laptop with switchable graphics and I learnt the very hard way NEVER EVER update any software relating to the GPU. I’ve also refrained from picking any updates to the Intel onboard graphics.

Now… do you think upgrading to Win 9/10 will just utterly destroy the perfect balance of the light/dark side in my PC? Because I can’t find any info on it at the moment and I’m being told by my PC I can upgrade to Win 10 now…

I fear what’ll happen though… if my Intel onboard decides to try to run Atilla instead of my AMD GPU… 🙁

What MS failed to mention in the “free” campaign is that when upgrading
10 of your pc components are used to create a UID which then registers
on the MS servers that way you don’t need a key when doing a fresh
install BUT replacing 3 minor components or the Motherboard revokes that
key & you have to purchase a new key or roll back to your 7/8
      copy…

I would suggest holding off the 10 upgrade till your pc is fully built….

Yup, unless you are willing to spend another R2500 for the new O.S. I’ve upgraded already to 10 pro I’m sure by the time I replace some components there will be a “Legit” activation patch 🙂

Like drivers? I’d always keep those up to date – and there’s AMD and Nvidia ones for Windows 10 already

I had an interesting experience with my last Nvidia card.
I installed a new update through that GeForce experience horror. Then it said that I needed to roll back an update because there were issues. Then it would tell me that I am not up to date and reinstall the new update. Then it would tell me to roll back an update because there were issues. Then…..you see where I’m going with this.
        I now have AMD.

            Eish.
It’s strange how one little thing on your pc can completely mess with your stuff though. I’ve had so many problems with Nvidia software over the years, even after formats. But there was obviously something that I used that messed with it. With AMD no issues. Yet.

They go through cycles then the one is brillaint and then the other crap. That specific generation (as AMD bought ATI) drivers were horrendous the next one I had in my low budget machine behaved it self. Nvidia cards before was horrible and GeForce2 before that brillinat.

Still can not decide on the new one, AMD better value for money but with the company in cost saving mode there is good chance they star skimping on non-direct-revenue dev teams like driver developers.

            Quite true.
I’ve only had Nvidia all my life. Recently switched to AMD, but as you say. I’ve had some really good runs with Nvidia and then the last three years before I switched to AMD had way too many software issues. My 650ti was one of them.

Yeah the drivers. Except that unlike normal people, I can’t update mine. Because when AMD and HP made this union between Intel and AMD GPU’s they made it so that they have to release very SPECIFIC drivers for this switchable GPU nonsense. Which only happens once every Blood Moon crossed with a Witches Carnackle.

I have updated my GPU drivers a few times only to have to roll back to some specific instance of switchable graphics back when it still worked. So I’m really scared about getting Win 10 because while the drivers may be there… does switchable still work?

That is standard with most modern day non-gaming laptops, Intel GPU used for battery power saving.

had the same issues with Windows 8 of my Lenovo with i7 and Nvidia. Best is probably the hold out and check forums when proper drivers are released and nobody is complaining about it.

Upgraded. No technical issues so far.

I am not totally smaaking the new start menu in Win 10. I want my win8.1 start screen back (not the Win10 version of it, that sucks).

I loved being able to tap the winkey, click my app/game and sorted. Now I have to move my eyes to the right of the screen again, after a year or more of centre screen apps.

I see. Yeah, I’m ambivalent about the update. On the one hand it brought some nice features like Cortana, Edge, Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, the Xbox app, DirectX 12, etc, but on the other hand, I really, really liked Windows 8.1’s UI and touch-screen gestures. My hope is that they keep improving Windows 10 like they did with the 8.1 upgrade to 8.0.

Here is the ‘how to make it run on startup’

No problem. Yeah you can specify exactly what you want to see in the forcex settings for rainmeter. Speedfan monitors all, but you might not care about the IGP temps or load (for example), When you load the ‘module’ you pick the amount of cores etc you want to view on the desktop.

From what I’ve heard and frankly kept me from upgrading is that the windows system does automatic updates without your knowing. My internet at home is not godly so playing a online game and having to deal with windows updating all the time won’t be pleasant for me.

Also the need to get directx 12 now seems a bit stupid. Sure there are benches running directx 12 but what games right now really run on it.

Why were you on Windows 8 instead of 8.1? Windows 8 was so-so. Windows 8.1, on the other hand, may have been the best operating system ever made.

Furthermore, why wait a week? What will that accomplish?

I’ve had a very smooth upgrade, created the iso using the media tool. and installed on my pc and two laptops. Cortana enabled and all. Liking the new look and feel a lot. All my games, drivers, etc. are working as intended. Also checked some of the sites that I created in the new browser, and it looks good. 10/10 would recommend upgrading.

Only a small list of games don’t work (and there’s an official list too).
In the end I think it’s just about personal preference in this case. I’m not 100% ready yet to upgrade. There are a few games I actually still play that don’t work on Win10. But they’re all older games.

Okay so basically I should wait a bit then?
The guy that lives in my living room says I have to make some sort of backups first in case something buggers up. So now I have to get and external thingy to make these backups. There goes some of the money I saved for the PS4.

It’s definitely recommended to backup some of your important stuff.
I think you should at least just wait until all the creases have been ironed out. Even if only a month or two.
There were a few, though not many, people who upgraded and their install got stuck halfway through and their install got corrupted. But these aren’t too common.

I say for the average person don’t upgrade regardless if you on windows 7 or 8.1. I upgraded from windows 8.1 to 10 and my games feels about the same. Actually had some instances where my game will just freak out but i guess it’s a driver issue (I installed latest drivers). The only reason to upgrade is for dx12 and no game support that yet. in about a year windows should be more refined and then you can upgrade.

Have had zero issues with my upgrade so far – but I only upgraded so that I can mercilessly hunt for small issues that affect no one but me.

Because I hate Microsoft. Apparently 😛

I upgraded for Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, the Xbox app, Cortana, and Edge. Overall, I’m pretty impressed (and had zero problems updating), but I really do miss the excellent swipe gestures of Windows 8.1.

I got 2 failed notices I figured it was because of my illegal pro version. I switched to the ISO install from Microsoft and it installed with no problems. My cortana experiences span from asking about big butts and Nikki butt implants. Cortona been a busy little program.
