The Final Word : Infinity Ward on Modern Warfare 2 Dedicated Servers

The recent announcement that the PC version of Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 would be forgoing the use – or even allowance – of dedicated servers, favouring a console-style matchmaking system dubbed IWNet, has been met with a less-than-enthusiastic response from gamers.

People have bitched and moaned, started petitions, cancelled orders and threatened with boycott. Well, Infinity Ward have heard your pleas…

…and elected to do nothing about them. That’s right folks – Infinity Ward have put their mighty feet to the ground and reconfirmed that Modern Warfare 2, arguably the most anticipated first person shooter of the year, will not be getting dedicated server support.

Infinity Ward overlords Vince Zampella and Jason West have bandied together to issue an official response, and things don’t look good.  Jason said, "We’re just prioritizing the player experience above the modders and the tuners," hoping that those who were put off by cheaters will give it a go this time.  "We thought maybe it would be cool if the fans could play the game."

He further added that there will despite community request there will be no happy compromise of both dedicated servers and the new system running in parallel, saying it would "just bifurcate the community."

The community’s bifurcated alright – half of ‘em aren’t even sure if they’re going to bother buying the game any more.

You can read a little more about how IWNet will work over at FourZeroTwo, where community manager Rob Browning is trying to quell the rising storm.

100k petition versus multi-million in projected sales, hardly a contest.
seems like publishers and devs aren’t interested in maintaining let alone supporting the pc platform anymore.
    three cheers for progress

Hell, nearly every PC gamer now does dabble in modding or tuning – if they say something like that, then they clearly don’t understand their audience. Their “moderate-to-casual” fans moved onto consoles a while ago (not that there’s anything wrong with that, PC gaming does require a lot of devotion.)

They’ll probably just do what everyone else does these days – “Our game didn’t sell because of pirates, not because of (the fact that it sucked, we pissed off the community, etc).” Ether way, it’s a lose-lose for PC gamers.

If every guy that actually signed that petition decided not to buy the game, that would end up to a $5 999 000 loss so far.

We all know it won’t happen… but I know of quite a few PC gamers that has decided to opt out of MW2 and keep on playing MW1… whether they stick to their guns remains to be seen.

Just to be pedantic… those calculations are incorrect seeing as that they don’t take into account production and distribution costs. :dizzy:

But 100k users is significant, however in the form of a petition that is more like 40k real users…

I’m not buying this game anymore. Pointless for all SA pc gamers to buy it. Either we get paired with people overseas or all games are empty because people progress to different skill levels at different speeds.

If I was a PC gamer, I would Pirate it for SP and For MP on the 360.

we don’t need to support hardware companies or blizzard no more. they can go screw them self by the way this boycott is bigger than just 100k

It’s now 120 k and still growing fast.

Sad thing is, even if IW wants to make changes, it will only happen later via patches etc.

Game is 2 weeks from retail.

I’m kinda happy that I am getting this on console, at least that side of things seems pretty sorted. This is sucky news…

Suddenly there is no point in buying it any more. :pouty: I bought COD 4 just for the multiplayer, only after 8 months of buying it did I bother to have look at single play, Yeah it was good but didn’t play through it more than once. If I am gonna bother with the single player I prob just “borrow” a copy from a friend and uninstall it once I’m done. not gonna bother with the crappy laggy servers that Far Cry 2 and Fear 2 had. :ermm:
