Steam’s PC prices are cheaper in Rands

SA steam

Last week, we told you that Steam was officially changing over to using Rands in our local market. There were a host of concerns; we wondered if we’d get special prices or see local exchange rates lead to soaring prices, as well as issues about VAT and FPB influence. Oh, and let’s not even talk about the region locking. Well, the change has gone live and at least the prices are looking pretty good.

Here are the prices listed for some top sellers on the Steam store:

  • Fallout 4 = R799 (Conversion from USD would be R853)
  • Fallout 4 Season Pass = R399 (Conversion from USD would be R426)
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 = R799 (Conversion from USD would be R853)
  • Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (pre-order) = R599
  • Just Cause 3 (pre-order) = R449.10
  • XCOM 2 (pre-order) = R589
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (pre-order) = R499
  • Total War: Warhammer (pre-order) = R599
  • The Witcher 3 = R412.30

Those are all new releases though – and there are a great many older games available for close to nothing. The excellent Borderlands 2, for example, is available now for under R55. Of course, it’s worth noting that the Rand exchange rate is at an all-time low and these new price points will be fixed for the foreseeable future. That’s right PC gamers, if you buy on Steam, a new release will cost you up to R799 – these numbers feel almost like what console gamers pay; however, it appears that publishers will set their own price points and there will be some PC games that will release way under that amount, like Just Cause 3 and XCOM 2. Obviously, Steam Sales and other special deals will make things more affordable, although it’s worth pointing out that these games are region-locked, so if you’re hoping to buy games for friends (or alternate accounts) around the world as gifts, there might be some issues. Some games also appear to have no purchasing options, and it’s unclear if that’s an FPB issue or just a delay until the publishers set a regional price.

Then again, looking at local prices, you’re probably best off buying your new, AAA PC games through your favourite retail outlet. Across all local retail vendors, I was able to find cheaper prices for most of the new releases than I could find on Steam. So, while Steam is cheaper than expected, it seems that we might actually see PC gamers returning to physical copies thanks to even better bargains to be found via brick and mortar or e-commerce.

At least until the holiday sales come.

GTA is 33% cheaper now (Just under R500).
Overall not bad, besides, no PC gamer will buy stuff on steam unless it is on sale. New stuff is bought from cdkeys or gmg or fast2play or…

I disagree there. I’ve bought many a game at full price on Steam.
Though I have gotten most of my games from the Humble Bundles.

You should check the amount of pre-orders Fallout4 had. Totally blows your statement out of the ocean.

There are outliers, but why pay $59 on steam for Fallout if you could get it for $39 on cdkeys. Also preload via steam etc? For me the amount of FULL priced steam buys in my 360 odd library is very very small.

True the Full priced steam buys in my 120+ library is small too. It depends on the person i guess. I really wanted GTA5. pre-purchased on steam for full price. That is literally the only one that comes to mind.

And there are some seriously good ones around. GTA V is really cheap now. This is going to be exciting and I am sure prices will drop a little more in time to come

well if you are on uncapped it doesn’t really matter. Yes you pay for the internet but let’s face facts… You’d pay without the game too. So unless you are on a restricted cap account that really isn’t an argument that can be used

I don’t see the point of a steam machine , you loose all the major advantages of PC gaming mainly customization, so no on that would rather pick a console and get some exclusives PC won’t get , and just connect a PC to my TV if need be.

It might cost a bit less because of benefits from local pricing & exchange rates, but it’s still a lot more expensive than buying from a local retailer – over R100 in the case of BLOPS3 (Gavin likes it if you call it BLOPS) & even more with F3. New releases just aren’t worth buying directly on Steam anymore.

Government has always wasted money on excessively expensive & flashy transport for as long as I can remember. Just look at their cars. You don’t need a R1mil car to do your tax payer funded job. The pope can drive a Fiat, so you’ve got no excuse. If you want one, buy it yourself, out of the salary everyone contributes towards with their taxes. It pisses me off because it’s something so simple and visible, and screams arrogance and disdain.

        Witcher 3 $40 Works.
        W3 Expansion Pack $8 Works.
Ive literally never had a single problem with G2A and their keys. I once got locked out of my G2A account. Contacted support. Got back in. They gave me a 20% discount.

Even so, The Developers are cut out of Game Sales on G2A, So Congratz, You bought Witcher 3 for a Bit cheaper, But CD Projekt RED, who poured their heart and Soul into the game, didn’t receive a cent of it.

If you can live with that on your conscience, fine. Good luck to you.

Its a global copy of the GoG edition? You do understand keys are purchased for cheaper right. Meaning keys where purchased originally. Meaning Devs got money. But okay.

And to be honest. When digital copies of games start becoming R800 a pop. I dont actually give a fuck.

        It’s R350 which converts to $24.59

If we were still in Dollars we would have the US price of $29.99 which is R426 in current exchange price.

The price difference on new releases between Steam and Retail has always been cheaper at retail. But Steam specials and the slightly older releases always tend to be cheaper on Steam. That’s how it’s always worked. It’s just that we’re actually paying less right now than we would’ve if we buy on Steam.
