How to unlock Metal Gear Solid V’s frame rate on PC

Metal Gear Solid V is a phenomenal, incredibly polished game. I’m not a fan of Kojima’s convoluted narratives, though I’ve enjoyed every one of his games that I’ve played. Metal Gear Solid V is something special though. It’s hard to quantify, but there’s so much to the game, that come together to create an exceptional experience that’s one of the best game’s I’ve played this year, if not this generation.

Incredibly, the same can even be said of the PC version of Kojima’s swansong, which is rather unusual given how big budget, blockbuster games tend to be hobbled or broken on PC. Here’s what Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry says of the PC version (emphasis mine).

“Just like Ground Zeroes before it, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is one of the best-optimised titles on PC, and a superb way to experience Kojima’s swansong to the series. It suits a wide range of setups – with even a Core i3 budget PC with a GTX 750 Ti capable of matching and even exceeding the PS4 experience in certain areas. It’s a scalable game too – at its highest presets at ultra HD, it can even give the GTX 980 Ti and Titan X a run for their money – but ultimately, a 1080p target is very achievable on just about any enthusiast gaming hardware setup.

And crucially, Kojima Productions gives PC users plenty of options to tinker with its Fox Engine. The lack of support for frame-rates above 60fps is a shame, but everything else is present; from toggles to scale lighting quality and geometry LODs, to adjusting the quality of post-effects. Ultimately, the gains over PS4 and Xbox One are welcome; shadows are cleaned up, texture filtering is much improved, and the draw distance is broadened. However, the core elements are the same up close, and all three versions are highly recommended.”

The game runs rather well on all systems (with an impending patch to fix the Xbox One’s occasional stuttering), but there’s a problem for those running the most bleeding edge of PCs; the frame rate is capped at 60 fps. For most gamers, this isn’t even remotely an issue, but those running monitors with refresh rates higher than the usual, this can introduce unwelcome screen tearing. Thankfully, there’s a fix.

As spotted on the Guru3d forums, by editing a text file, you can unlock the frame rate, allowing your beastly hardware perform as it should. All you need to do is navigate to your MGS V folder under steam, locate the TPP_GRAPHICS_CONFIG, edit that file with Notepad and change:

“framerate_control” : “Auto”,

to

“framerate_control” : “Variable”,

Save the file, and that’s it. Usually, when muddling with locked framerates, players can experience odd in-game physics, but that’s not the case here. It runs and plays beautifully, even removing the mouse jitter that some users experience. Here’s a video tutorial if you;re struggling to find the file.

I watched a couple of clips of oVg playing this on Saturday, looks so good. Technically there were 3 clips, but the third was more like watching him play Menu Gear Solid.

bwahahaha trying to figure out the menu after 2 bottles of red wine was a mission. But after 2 hours of trial and error. I got hooked sending my units to gather resources. Kind of like Dragon Age where you send units to do timed resource gathering.

I unlocked some cool shit but was too drunk to remember.

As for that Frame Rate? Its the first time I have played an open world game at that frame rate.

DAMMMMM I wish the PS4 version of The Wither 3 was that butterly smooth.

The game is like WATER, be water my friend, become the jar. So darn polished.

Dat FOX engine, and we’ll probably not see this engine outside of PES again :(. Man, people that say frames don’t matter certainly haven’t played Metal Gear Sold V. Everything is just so damn smooth even on consoles. Game hardly ever dips in frames.

lol Its hard to resist the temptation to just blow everything up, but the it’s an amazing feeling to ghost a level and not be spotted a single time. Also, be sure to listen to the tapes on do the other side missions in GZ.

Great intro. I took around 5 hours to learn all the mechanics. Then it becomes a 3rd person Far Cry game. You can be as inventive as your imagination.

Superb. As a jaded gamer who has been playing nothing else but the Witcher since May, I found the game on whim at Musica Day 1 Edition as they were closing shop. I thought dam Untill Dawn is not out yet so I picked MGSV up expecting long narratives like MGS4.

To my surprise its better than Far Cray and darn fun. Thanks to the game being so polished I find the gameplay FUN. Not once have I been frustrated.

The gameplay is so enjoyable that I have not even bothered with the narrative yet. I love free roaming.

Right? I’ve been with the series since the PS1 days. I love the long story sections but I couldn’t even care right now, I just want to fulton all day. Gameplay is so much fun. Free roam is great, one side op led me to discover a big supply depot. Spent the day at work thinking about how I’m gonna infiltrate and STEAL EVERYTHING. It’s those little things that make it so amazing.

The game is very intelligent. I relies on the use of the Hunting part of the brain. A very important part of the brain that brings out the primitive side to us.

Nothing better than scouting out your pray and letting the imagination take over in order to eliminate the threat in whatever creative way imaginable, while still maintaining the element of surprise.

O.K. halfway into one mission I decided. mmmm that anti-aircraft gun looks adorable and is perfectly positioned on high ground.

RAT A TAT TAT TAT TA TAT TAT TAT TAT TAT TAT Goodby stealth hello carnage 🙂

Haha, I keep the carnage for free roam. There are indeed many ways to kill your enemies. It’s good to go ape shit on them every now and then. By far the most fun I’ve had is planting C-4 all over a post and luring enemies with magazines to their location and then BOOM, blow them all up 😀

I tranquilized a soldier who then fell into a puddle, he drowned 🙁

Its all those little details that make the game so great.

Haha, shame! Indeed, game is full of amazing details. Also, don’t forget to explore Mother Base, apparently it’s holding some secret.

Yup, nothing more soul shattering than getting anything but an S rank.
Free Roam is there to try out all the crap. It’s a nice balance between sneaking and moering everything in the face with a rocket.

I am currently playing Mad Max or as I like to call it The wacky adventures of Chumbucket featuring Mad Max.
It is impressively smooth and has not had a single bug screw me over and that is a lot coming from the same publisher who brought us Arkham bugfix.

It was odd not having Hayter. When Kiefer speaks its like hold on… who just spoke? Is that his liquid twin or some crazy drug induced brain storming session from Kojimasan.
