Hatred, the game, will not be distributed by GOG

GOG.com is the saviour of gaming, according to some – with its zero DRM distribution method and its fair international pricing mechanism so it came as a little bit of a surprise to hear this morning that they have refused to distribute the upcoming mass murder game,  Hatred.

Now Hatred has split the gaming community down the middle with some people saying it is going to far and doesn’t offer anything but a sort of sick violence porn, while others feel it is to be seen as art – and that censoring art and the idea that they are apparently debating isn’t okay.

I personally sit in the latter group and while I’m not sure the game really does offer anything of value I do feel that censoring anything because of your personal beliefs is wrong; Give the game an appropriate rating and then let society decide with their wallets.

I do not believe that video games have any correlation to criminal acts and numerous research studies have proven that to be the case. So if massacring innocent individuals in pixel form is what gives you your entertainment then who am I to judge? Many people feel the same and have gotten angry that GOG won’t be distributing this game, and again I’m against that idea as well.

GOG is a private company and if they feel this game isn’t a product they want to be associated with then they have the right to not stock it. They aren’t banning the game or refusing it to be released, they are just not participating in it.

A comment on Arstechnica puts it perfectly when he states

I don’t get all bent out of shape when Walmart gladly sells movies like “Fifty Shades of Grey” on Blu-ray, but refuses to sell XXX donkypr0n releases… so I have a hard time being concerned that GOG has decided not to sell a fringe title like “Hatred”.

There is a big difference between a controlling legal authority “banning” something and a retailer deciding not to “sell” something.

I’m looking forward to trying the game out when it is released, but more due to the fact that the visuals look pretty incredible and the idea is so shocking. It’s something I want to experience myself.

I’m honestly surprised more gamers aren’t jumping on this. That way, they can have an outlet for all their hate, instead of reddit, twitter, and the various other mediums through which they like to exercise their wanton and unjustified hate.

But hey. Killing pixels in a game is way worse than ruining people’s lives, sending death and rape threats, and generally being cunts for no good reason at all. Right?

I’m not going to buy it, because it doesn’t really interst me, but I don’t care if it’s on Origin, Steam, GOG or Uplay. It’s each person’s own choice to actually buy it. There are lots of worse things on the internet.
Okay. Maybe I care if it’s on Uplay. Nothing deserves to be punished like that.

And its all a bit ridiculous. Many use the web as a place to whine and rage, feel sorry for alot of these people when they get out in the real world . Everyone has things that bug them, but most don’t have time to type expletive laced idiocy about any little thing they don’t like. But if that’s what floats their boat its their right, just seems like a waste of time to me.

Hmm… who announced the game wouldn’t be released on GOG. It wasn’t GOG… it was the developers… wonder why. This game is marketed solely on its concept and not its, excuse the pun, execution.

I will laugh my arse off if it turns out to be a shit game to play, because the ones rushing towards it like moths to the non-PC flame will twist themselves into knots trying to deny it.

It’s almost like they knew that if they announced GOG wasn’t selling their game, GOG would get inundated with complaints from a small subset of gamers, maybe even to the point where they reverse their decision. It’s so patently obvious what they’re trying to do it’s ridiculous.

I remember when people lost their sheeple minds over Manhunt. Jack Thompson was ready to defend the masses from evil and violent video games (presumably after he was raped by Pacman – or so the legend goes).

My response at the time? A big fat middle finger… I actually enjoyed Manhunt, it wasn’t nearly the hit it could have been, but it was so over the top, you couldn’t help but be entertained by it. It was also one of those games that was perfect for drinking games – a bit like bad movies and Steven Seagall’s hair piece.

I feel the same way about Hatred. I’ll buy it the second I can. It’s oddly the one PC game that I’m keen to get.

Its up there with postal … some people can have lots of laughs by pissing on some guy and making him puke. Others on the other hand gets bored in 5 minutes as it doesnt amuse them.

Some of my friends finds entertainment in those titles, I still dont see why though.

Hatred doesn’t even need to market itself. The media has done it for them! More developers should throw some controversy into their titles if they want to save money on marketing costs!
