Epic’s new game to “push next generation graphics”

Epic Games and its engine are well known for pushing the boundaries of computer graphics and other similar, meaningless hyperbole. Fawning aside, their engine is great and they make great games. Their next game, they say, will “push next generation graphics.”

Talking up Unreal and the future of Epic with Edge, Epic’s Tim Sweeney said of the company’s new game, “It’s going to push next generation graphics as you’d always expect Epic to do.” Our money’s on it being based on that Samaritan demo.

“There’s a lot [of Unreal Engine 4 games] on the way and a large number of them haven’t been announced,” he continued “You’ll see lots of triple-A stuff coming out over time.”

That however, isn’t the most interesting thing that Sweeny said. According to him, the games industry is going through quite a change.

“The industry’s changing. This generation it seems like there are about a third of the number of triple-A titles in development across the industry as there was last time around – and each one seems to have about three times the budget of the previous generation. I think we’re heading towards a future where triple-A is the minority.”

Fewer AAA games are being made, and the ones that are are costing mountains of money to produce. If you’re keen to see what Unreal Engine 4 is capable of, here are some shots from the UE4 demo. You can see them in glorious 8K if you wish, over on dsogaming reader K putt’s Flickr page

I remember hearing that Doom 3 was released. What an average game that was. Nice visuals though.

I agree. I actually turned on God mode to get through the game quicker. And I never do that with a first play through.

It might be in the minority here, but I enjoyed Doom 3 and Quake 4. The latter I enjoyed perhaps too much 😛
I have to confess : I’m a bit perplexed at the ‘meh’ flak directed at the game. Did you find the gameplay repetitive?

Yeh I also enjoyed Quake 4 more but Doom 3 wasn’t bad by a long shot.

It got predictable pretty fast. Every time I got to a new room I’d open the door, see nothing’s there, walk slowly through the doorway backwards, kill monster that spawns behind you, turn around, walk more, kill monster that spawns in front of you, repeat.

Oh yeah, I do seem to recall that the scares quickly became predictable.

If it wasnt for doom 3 your would not have per pixel lightning. All the nice shadow effects etc was again invented by ID software … the Source engine that ran Half Life 2 at the time could not even do per pixel lightning.

As the biggest id fan in the world, I don’t think its no longer true. Epic Games are currently in a league of their own imo. The last engine to really impress me like UE4 was Tech 4. I don’t see that tech 5 has support for PBR for instance(I know its old, but its not been added to the new Wolf by the looks of it). Star Citizen while impressive has not impressed me as much as the UE4 demos.

The UE toolset is simply amazing since the original UED, which imo is more vital for 3rd party licencing. With John no longer at id it will never be the same again. id was always about pushing tech to its absolute limits, with a strong focus on reducing input lag and visual artifacts, but with Bethesda at the helm I don’t see that happening any more. Instead they will invest in developing its tools for in-house use. I also don’t think they licence to the outside any more.

I hope Tech 6 keeps their legacy in tact. <3 id.

Yeh also the id tech engines cannot be used outside Zinimax studios they simply refuse to licence it to the public unlike UE4. I agree the toolset is amazing and the SDK and that is where they really shine in my opinion. Look dont get me wrong currently the UE4 is the most power full by the looks of things.

The id tech5 engine wasnt that amazing tbh what I evolved about it is its solid you can feel it in the controls where the Unreal Engine feels a bit floaty if you know what I mean. I think the only cool thing technology wise was the Megatexture streaming but that caused its own problems all together.

The frostbyte 3 engine is pretty but mechanics wise its a pile of shit.

Totally agree, the feel of id Tech games is unmatched. It’s so responsive(At least with m_filter 0). One thing I really disliked about CryEngine and many other engines is how horrible the mouse input feels unless you hit well above 60fps. Unreal Engine is not as bad as CryEngine imo, but quite behind to id Tech in this regard.

Yes exactly I think thats why I like ID engines because it feels like you really are in controll. I cant stand Cry Engine TBH I think its build for consoles because on PC it always feels clunky. I am very interested to see how Star Citizen will perform on it. It might just work for a space flight sim, I know it doesnt work for Mech Combat in MWO but there I think the developers is just useless.

mfilter wow its been a long time since I used that command 🙂 +mlook use to give you mouse look in quake 1 I think lol. Im feeling old now sigh …. 🙂

Yeah. It’s an issue with Star Citizen too. At least on my 60hz LCD with v synch. It’s really horrible. On my 120hz CRT on the other hand it feels really good when I set to medium graphics to max out the framerate at 800×600. 🙂

That ice cave map is so damn impressive. The weather effects and ice material is just on another level. The screenshots hardly do them justice.

I hate to be the one to point this out but it’s no longer next gen. Both consoles are here. It’s now just current gen…. #justsaying

Precisely. That’s the target (although I honestly believed “next-gen” consoles’ aiming point was 1080p *Sigh*)

So I guess the Unreal 4 Engine could push next gen 4k capable devices hey….

I am sure it can Star Citizen si running on Cry Engine 3 and the game is developed from the ground up with support for 4k. Most of their videos on youtube is rendered at 4k.

Current engines does support 4k actually it just struggles to do it and as there is no native support for it you get all kinds of funny stuff happening.

Currently only SLI and Crossfire rigs can render 4k in a game at over 60fps. In bf4 you can upscale to 4k and you will get about an average of 80fps in a 64player match. My god but does it look beautiful …. you wont believe how much less strain there is on your eyes.

I’m sure and as you rightly pointed out that is next gen. 1080 was the “next gen” target. Hardware has now hit the 1080 mark.

Now to move up to 4k as next gen.
