DOTA 2 Result–South Africa vs Romania (and more drama)

So last night our mighty South African DOTA 2 team went up against the Romanians and the expected happened… they were thrashed.

Okay to be honest I can’t actually find any real feedback on the game yet and I wasn’t able to watch it last night but the end result was 2-0 to Romania. However by the gist of the tweets and facebook comments that I’ve seen there was definitely room to improve locally.

So is it simply that our guys aren’t good enough to compete against Romania? Well, no I don’t think so.

The problem lies in how these things are organised locally. As we all know the MSSA organises the local South African teams and to their credit they actually held DOTA 2 trials ahead of this match. But man did they get it wrong again.

youre-doing-it-wrong

Firstly the trials were to be held in Gauteng and Cape Town only. You had to actually be present at the trials to try out for this online game. The logic being that you needed to be monitored by a referee from the MSSA.

So great; you and your friend team up in JHB with two other guys in Cape Town, that opens the pool a bit. But no unfortunately not as the MSSA decreed that everyone in a team had to live within 50Km of each other because… well no one really has any idea why apart from the MSSA who appear to suck rules out of their asses at times.

But anyway at least the best players from JHB or Cape Town were chosen right? Well no since according to a post by celebrity shoutcaster, Congo Kyle, the Cape Town trials haven’t taken place yet.

I could go on.. oh wait I will. Not only was the South African team only chosen from those who could attend the JHB trials in person – on short notice – but they were only allowed to attend if they had already paid a registration fee to an affiliated club of the MSSA.

Now I’ve never been in an official competitive eSports team but I have played many outdoor sports for many official teams including provincial colours and you know how it normally works? You rock up at the trials and if you are good enough you are invited to join the club. If you don’t want to or can’t pay the fees that is fine then you can’t join. Seems fair to me but the MSSA prefers to do it backwards.

They will respond that this is different as they don’t run the clubs and I could never be invited to transvaal trials (yes I’m old) if I wasn’t already a member of the Randburg Football club and they would be correct. But the eSports scene isn’t as big as the football scene locally and the archaic rules need to change.

We are being embarrassed locally simply because the MSSA refuses to change and that is disappointing. We are investigating ways to work within their rules but man there are so many of them and they really aren’t easy to navigate.

To be clear I’m not trying to put down anyone who tried last night, maybe you were the top 4 in the country but wouldn’t you want to be sure? How about we have open trials for DOTA where everyone can enter a team no matter who they are and then the winning team can look for sponsorship to cover their club and affiliation.

I know MWEB would do that as they are being exceptionally supportive of the local gaming initiative and I myself would happily cover a team’s costs to ensure we put our best team forward.

Oh and finally, for the love of all things holy please can someone donate a proper camera to Colin so that we can stop having these rubbish Blackberry pictures being used as official photos?

And maybe explain who these good looking people are? Different tops, don’t seem to be related to gaming at all?

1002870_10152093022984008_1544709706_n

And then the cherry on the top of the embarrassment cake

603043_10152090198484008_909645968_n

It’s Afrique de Sud… I hope above all else that this image was made by the Romanians who can be forgiven. [Edit: Yep, made by a Romanian chap, and checks out just fine]

Apparently DOTA 2 is one of the most popular games locally and we have a bigger population (2 1/2 times) than Romania so we really should be at least equal to them.

You can watch it all here, if you’re so inclined (forward to about an hour in before any action happens).

or if they supported the past MSSA affiliated gaming teams.

Theyve had ample opportunities to prove themselves to the SA gaming community, but time and time again, they have dropped the ball.

The idea is great, but the practice is bad. Surely if you want to grow the sport in the counrty, you will make it easy to join? Marketing 101: Never overcharge on a new product. If you want E-Sports to get bigger, make the trials free and encourage everyone to take part. Once the members are big enough, and the organzation requires a supplimented income, THEN start charging fees.

Frankly, since I read the article about DOTA2 the community, I feel that DOTA2 has a maximum douchebag density, hence resulting in the copious amounts of fucks that I give pertaining to the subject. Regarding the MSSA issues, well they are clearly fronting as a professional organization when in fact it’s clearly not.

I agree with Gavins synopsis of the situation, the competitions giving us the “National Team” was a farce.

Then again, the MSSA need to plan better, get more places included in trials and cut the 50km crap… it’s a freaking ONLINE game you retards!!!

Alright, heres my two cents because I dont agree entirely with this article…

I watched the game, I can really say that the South Africans didnt do badly at all, but lets also look at brass tax, the Romanians were the old Kaipi team. Lets not fuckaround. These okes were in for the previous Internationals. Yes the actual dota internationals. They are an old clan, with bucket loads more tournament play and experience.

Dont you think its grabbing at straws? Im not saying their win was inevitable but come on, out of the best of the world they actually got pretty far in the last couple of games, and for SA to actually contend with them should actually make us proud (the team too, they really did do well)

The South Africans could have played better, not to say they did bad, there was moments when I was screaming at the TV in pure unadulterated excitement, there was some really good dota being played throughout both mathces. That being said, you dont shove Tyson and Tiger into a MMA cage or a chess match, one will always murder the other.

My personal thoughts are that we were not out numbered but man oh man were we outgunned. The hero picks could have been more thought out and some form of strategy for dealing with farming HC’s could have gone a long way. I mean for fuck sake, who leaves an Alci to farm up? Why go one man all over the map when you know you should be getting supported for your Radiance. I mean it really was sloppy. They got their hiding that they deserved but now they know how to prioritise their objectives.

Either way, I dont think all the blame lies with the SA’s team or the MSSA, it wasnt a terrible match, we unfortunately were just out classed by world pro’s. Its difficult to be upset about that.

Besides, from what I can see, everyone had a really fun game and it looked like both teams gave it all they could and it lead to a very exciting and edge of your seat laugh out loud comp.

From my short experiences with DOTA 2, I can say that if you cant support your carry early on, you are stuffed. And Kotl is the king of support. Hoping the guy wasnt lane pushing instead of helping the carry.

The first game wasnt a carry issue, only the second. Kotl did ok 1st game, but the thing is you could see we were still green in the issue. I believe we lost due to the meta game. Technique and gameplay was spot on but strategy… man that was lacking a LOT.

I dunno, i agreed with the POTM pickup in game 2.
we had good ping, while the romanians had 300.
a potm pickup as the carry means they were aiming for an early game finish, to abuse the difference in ping with POTM arrows.

            August 1, 2013 at 10:51

the idea behind KOTLs blast is to pressure the opponent and create space for the carry.
having the other support to pull effectively, the lane should never push.
Scant plays a decent KOTL, Odu’s rubick on the other hand was questionable.

Kotl wouldnt have been my personal choice for a support that game, i think a disruptor would have been much more effective against Bone7s NP.
but then again, you can never go wrong with a kotl pickup.

the heal is too mana intensive, makes him useless untill he gets mana boots.
Tree can cast armour and damage reduction thing globally, makes him far more effective.

eSports – the biggest oxymoron in the universe. It’s not a sport. A sport is a physical activity through the use of physical ability and skills. And don’t tell me it is physical because you are doing something with your brain and hands… sitting in front of a PC/console clicking buttons is not physical activity. I really wish they would rename it to something it actually is, like eGames, Strategic Games, or something else.

R100 000 local tourney, R2000 entrance fee per clan. You will need 50 clans to break even.

The first game was really one sided but SA put up a great fight in game 2 🙂 it was exciting!

I still think that there should be a team chosen based on individual skill, then that formed team work together as the international team. I’m not taking anything away from last nights team, but perhaps there could be a stronger combination? I know a team gelling together is a HUGE thing, the players need to know how to play with each other, but consider this:

In any sport, lets say soccer, a player will play for their club, and if they are good enough, they will be chosen for the international team. They will spend time playing local games with their club, and then they will spend time playing games with their international team (whether it be friendlies or the world cup for example).

Granted, Dota is not “physical” and the game is obviously different to any sport I am comparing it to, but surely if we put together a team based on the best mid player, support, carry, etc and let them spend time working together, we will have a better team?

I mean, if you take South Africa’s rugby team for example, its not like we simply take the entire Sharks/Bulls/Stormers/Lions/etc team because they are the best at the moment. The SA team is created by choosing the best possible player for that role. I think we should at least try applying that logic to our Dota 2 team.

Also, LG organise some events 😛 the more practice and exposure players get, the better!

If you had read a few more lines you would have realised the article wasn’t about the actual game but rather the preparation for the game…
