Codemasters' Formula One 2010 Woes

It seems like Codemasters may be faced with quite a large problem.

Codemasters now have the Formula One license and have been at work on their first of many F1 titles. Their first licensed game will be based on the 2009 season and will release on the Wii and PSP, but there are no problems there, the problem lies in their next game for PS3 , PC and Xbox 360 that is set for release in 2010.

If you haven’t heard the news, all Formula One teams with the exception of only two, had formed an association called FOTA (Formula One Team’s Association) and had threatened to pull out of Formula One if the FIA didn’t come to compromise with budget restrictions that started all the fuss.

Well, the doo-doo has now hit the fan, because it seems like FOTA have decided to go through with their threats.

Does this spell disaster for Codemasters?

To be honest, I don’t know what to think. There is a part of me that believes that FOTA is only bluffing, so that the FIA feels the pressure to give in to their demands. The problem is that it seems like they really aren’t, which means that teams like McLaren, Ferrari, Williams BrawnGP and more will no longer be a part of the series.

Codemasters have declined to comment so far, but I think that they are sitting with a huge problem on their hands. If this split really does happen, Formula One will be filled with new teams and new drivers that no one cares about, so the license will become pretty useless.

Until this issue between the FIA and FOTA is resolved, Codemasters will have to just wait and hope for the best. Things may go belly up though, so keep an eye out for more news on the subject in the near future.

  1. its almost a certainty that the rebel teams will form a break away series, especially in light of a poll which stated 91% of f1 fans questioned, fully supported fota’s attempts at setting up a rival championship.
ultimately they will eventually amalgamate, just like champ and indy car did a while back, when they had their spat.

as for codemasters, there’s no real problem for them, as f1 will still be around next year, just without the likes of the big teams.
obviously it’ll have an impact on sales, but there are enough f1 fans out there who’d buy the game… one of which would be me.

I stand with the FOTA as well.
As for a new F1 Game that will be released for 2010.
All CM have to do I get lic for FOTA-F1. (Which should still be open and will only be able to be used for 2011 F1 Game)
CM can still release one this year and next.
Coz as (easy) said “there are enough f1 fans out there who’d buy the game…”
Been waiting for ages so a bit more aint gona hurt.

BTW: Williams submitted an unconditional entry to the 2010 F1 championship, meaning the next F1 game will at least feature 1 known team  – even though it’s a crappy team.

hmm.. I wonder if Williams will finally be able to win a championship once all the other teams are gone…

Anyhoo – If it’s anything like grid, the game is gonna suck anyways.

williams have won quite few wdc’s and wcc’s it their f1 history.
but yeah, they should pretty much clean up next year if the big guns go through with their threat.

and yeah, i also hope its not like grid!
