Be honourable in League of Legends

So having played League of Legends a couple of times I haven’t really experienced the community as a hostile one, certainly not as much as the DotA community. However, Riot Games want to encourage players to behave in order to receive rewards, because we lurve rewards.

They’ve now implemented a new Honor system, where summoners can acknowledge each other’s awesomeness and well-behavedness by clicking the thumbs up icon next to the summoners name at the post-game lobby. This feature is available in all game modes except for custom ones. You’ll be able to award honor to the people who made your game awesome in four different categories: Helpful, Friendly, Teamwork and Honorable Opponent. You will also be able to review the honor that’s been awarded to you in your summoners profile.

And what will you get for gaining lots and lots of honor by being a friendly and helpful team mate and honourable opponent? Well, nothing! Muahahaha and I’m not even kidding. Riot’s FAQ states that: Your total Honor represents your ongoing commitment to making games better for your fellow summoners. It’s not a currency, and you can’t spend it – we’re going to experiment with some potential bonuses to being an honorable summoner in the future.

In other words, Riot’s dangling a carrot in front of your nose to get you to behave in the hopes of maybe receiving bonuses in the future. Now I’m not saying that LoL players should not be awesome and friendly and stuff, but right now I don’t really see a purpose for this feature other than tweens feeling good about their “honor” until Riot decides to implement some real use or reward for honor, That being said I’m also not saying summoners should only be awesome in order to receive rewards. What are your views on this new system? Yay or nay, or meh?
