Assassin’s Creed 2 on PC Requires Constant Internet Connection

Oh Ubisoft! Have we not learnt of the nerdrage that results from draconian DRM? Apparently not, as CVG has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed 2 for the PC – and in fact all future games from the French publisher will feature what must be one of the worst ideas in Digital Right Management ever conceived.

The game will require PC gamers to be connected to the internet, and logged in to Ubisoft’s verification servers – at all times.

If your connection happens to drop or any reason – Lightning, your router rebooting, cat chewing your cable, Telkom -  you’ll be booted from the game, losing whatever progress you’d made since your last save. You’re given the option of uploading your save to Ubisoft’s “Master Server,” so you can resume your game from just about any capable, internet connected PC – but regardless of where your save is stored, you won’t be able to play without an always on, trouble-free internet connection.

If you’re still stuck on dial-up (Ag, shame!) you quite frankly may as well not bother. The bigger problem though is that should Ubisoft’s servers go down for any reason, you won’t be able to play the game. That you paid good money for.

So who does this help? Certainly not paying customers. Pirates have demonstrated an unfailing ability to bypass DRM restrictions, meaning they’ll probably be able to play the game without any on-line checks. The only people this will affect will be people who actually buy the game…and it will likely annoy the hell out of them.

This is likely to deter PC gamers from buying and playing Ubisoft games, which is a pity. Assassin’s Creed 2 is pretty damned good, and Splinter Cell Conviction is on its way soon too.

Well, Steam will be offering the same service for saved games online. But alas, it will boil over in the end as the only people making a fuss of this are in SA it seems. The gamers in the EU or US dont even know what offline is anymore.

Then the people in SA are the smart ones. This kind of DRM punishes the legitimate buyer, period.

The main problem is that this “offline” single player game require UBI’s servers to be on, what if 5 years from now they turn them off like EA has been doing? Then the game that you bought and might feel the urge to play again will be useless… and the first thing you will do is go look for a patch to bypass the DRM…

      my life.WTF?
It already ticks me off to no end that they put install
limits on games without ANY form of warning to the buyer. That surely shouldn’t be allowed.

They are trying to stop the piracy without thinking at the risks they get with this bullshit. Internet connection? C’mon.

The stupidest idea ever conceived.

Bad move from Ubi – I will not buy such games so bye bye Silent Hunter 5 etc. etc. etc. Why should I, who buy only legit copies, get shafted in the process?

Steam is the way to go – especially when the local Steam server is up and running.

    Hi Guys

Just got [AC2] today, and nearly sh@t my pants out of exitement…
I live in the butt side of SA, and constant internet access is always a problem.

I have just downloaded the best looking DRM bypass, but I will not even give the link, because Ubisoft updated the Ubisoft Game Launcher wich the crack used for a loophole.

    ahhh F*ck!

Why did Ubisoft go and Piss people off with their “permanent internet connection required”? they just made the made the bigest mistake a gaming company can make. They lost about over n million customers (that was two weeks ago) they could have made more money if the game did not require internet connection.but as we afrikaners say “as jy dom is moet jy sukkel”.they will regret what they did
