Speaking in an investor call, Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot has called Nintendo’s as yet unnamed Wii successor “a fantastic platform” and is sure the system is destined for success.

“The platform that Nintendo is coming with is really a fantastic platform,” he said. “We think that it will be extremely successful,” he added teasingly, before hinting that we can expect the sort of games, possibly even better, than the ones we currently enjoy on the current crop of HD consoles. “What we see is that we will be able to leverage a lot of the work we do for the Xbox 360 and PS3 when we create games for the platform,” said Guillemot. “So we will not have to completely redo the games we create. We will be able to use all of the capacity the console offers and also use all of the work that we do for the other platforms.”

They’ll be able to use the same general assets they use for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in their new games for the console, currently codenamed Project Cafe, instead of having to create entirely new games (often with watered-down elements) as they currently for for the Wii. A great example of this is Ubisoft’s upcoming Driver resurrection, in which the Wii version is  a completely different game that serves as a prequel to the main game. Hopefully, it also means an end to the relentless deluge of shovelware crap and rehashed ports we’ve seen extracting money from the unaware mass-market casual gaming audience. Probably not though.

Nintendo’s set to officially reveal their new console at this year’s E3 in Los Angeles next month. If the rumours are anything to go by, it should be  more powerful than Microsoft and Sony’s current consoles – but it could end up being outrageously expensive. I recently asked Ubisoft’s PR what they had up their sleeves for Nintendo’s new machine, a question that was met with nothing but tight lips and twinkly eyes.
