It’s a big year for gamers, in terms of hardware. We’ve already seen the PS Vita launch, and so far, it seems to be a device that can really take handheld gaming to a new level, provided that it can be bolstered with enough worthwhile software in its library to keep the momentum going.

On the other end of the hardware scale, we’ve got Nintendo and their latest home console, the Wii U. It’s a slick looking device that sports a tablet controller,  but more importantly, it’s going to have a library that doesn’t just consist of shovelware games, as titles such as Assassin’s Creed 3 and Darksiders 2 will be making an appearance on the console.

But can the Wii U compete in an industry that has two visual power-houses dominating the scene? Well, Vigil Games, developer of Darksiders 2, certainly believes in the Wii U.

“So far the [Wii U] hardware’s been on par with what we have with the current generations,” Vigil’s Marvin Donald told Game Reactor.

Based on what I understand, the resolution and textures and polycounts and all that stuff, we’re not going to being doing anything to up-res the game, but we’ll take advantage of the controller for sure.

Read between the lines and you’ll wonder what exactly Donald means by “so far”. It could be that the console has some more grunt under the hood that we don’t know about, as the majority of dev kits sent to developers in the early days of a console don’t always push the device to its limits.

So it looks like the possibility is there for the Wii U to stand tall next to current-gen consoles for at least a few years before their respective successors pop up.
