Splatoon was nearly a Mario game

Because of course it was. Nintendo has this bizarre habit of shoehorning its biggest star, that moustachioed plumber in to all manner of game in which he rightly doesn’t belong. And according to Edge, he was very nearly the star of Nintendo’s new shooter IP, Splatoon.

In the latest copy of Edge magazine, which is chock full of cool Nintendo interviews,

“There were heated debates over who the main player character should be,” said Miyamoto to Edge.  “Whether it should be Mario, or a squid.”

“When we talked about the possibility of it being Mario, of course we could think of the advantages: anybody would be willing to touch it as soon as we announced that we had the new Mario game. But at the same time, we had some worries. If it were Mario, we wouldn’t be able to create any new IP.”

If it were a Mario game, it would have been a bit of a spiritual successor to Super Mario Sunshine, which has to be one of the most divisive main entry games in the chubby plumber’s history.

On the one hand, putting Mario in the title guarantees a certain level of sales, but I’m glad that Nintendo’s opted to created Splatoon as wholly new IP. We’ve had the opportunity to play it, and it’s every single bit as fun as it looks.

Splatoon features a bunch of squids armed with ink guns, and they’re able to magically traverse the ink that matches their team colour. Check it out.

I think It should be playable by people with some forms of colour blindness, from what I’ve seen so far, the team colours tend to be colourwheel opposites… So at least one should be visible…. I think #NotAnEyeDoctor #IMayBeCompletelyWrong.

Maybe, maybe not. I have noticed my view of contrasting colours is not always the same as others. for example, in Excel I will highlight a cell with a back and fore ground colour, but I can read it and no one else can.

There are many games I struggle to play, but luckily most I do not care for a lot. Civ 2 had colour blind (color, shame poor Americans) help as an option which was AWESOME. Neverwinter nights, for example, had two puzzles that needed my wife to help me with, no way could I them. Also some Xbox game I played two years ago, I simply could not progress without her help with the colours

I am not totally colour blind, but do struggle with more than one colour pairing.
