When the 3Ds launched, it did so at a price that many felt was just a tad too high. As a result, sales of the device slumped until the company decided to slash its price in a drastic attempt to further the device’s momentum. Nintendo doesn’t want to repeat that costly cost mistake – so expect the system to be…affordable.

“We won’t make the same mistake that we did with the 3DS, which was considered relatively high by consumers,” Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said, according to Andriasang’s translation of an interview in a Japanese daily. Nintendo hasn’t released pricing information, letting retailers set their own pricing in European regions. We still don;t quite know what to expect when it comes to the Wii U’s pricing – but Amazon UK recently, and briefly put the device up for pre-order at a rather affordable 199 squids; a shade over R2600.

Industry analyst Michael Pachter has said the new console needs to sell for less than $300 to be successful, with $250 being the ideal price. Nintendo also seems to be fixing the 3DS’ launch lineup issue; the Wii U will launch with the following titles available:

  • Pikmin 3
  • New Super Mario Bros. U
  • Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition
  • Scribblenauts Unlimited
  • Darksiders 2
  • Mass Effect 3
  • TANK! TANK! TANK!
  • Tekken Tag Tournment 2
  • Trine 2: Director’s Cut
  • Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge
  • Aliens Colonial Marines
  • Wii Fit U
  • Sing!
  • LEGO City: Undercover
  • Just Dance 4
  • ZombiU
  • The Avengers: Battle for Earth
  • Assassin’s Creed III
  • Rayman Legends
  • Rabbids Land
  • YourShape: Fitness Evolved 2013

That’s quite a stellar line up – if you don;t already have a current console. Many of the heavy hitters on the list are just retreads of games we’ve already played – like Arkham city, Mass Effect 3 and Ninja Gaiden. The star tiles there are obviously the Nintendo first party games, ZombiU and Rayman Legends. are they enough to get you to buy a Wii U?
