CNN predicting the death of consoles

CNN-Breaking-NewsCNN, that massive news behemoth, has been chatting about the results of E3 and have come to an interesting conclusion that I honestly can’t really fault. According to CNN the next generation of consoles will be the last.

It’s interesting to see the mainstream take on the conference and yes with the amount of change that we’ve seen in this generation alone it’s becoming increasingly likely that the next generation of consoles will be the last.

CNN touch on that aspect but only just, but I have my own thoughts on that.

It’s not that consoles will go away but rather the cyclic nature of the industry will end and it will begin acting more like the PC industry where the same consoles will keep on receiving hardware upgrades.

It’s already happened in this generation with the new Xbox 360 being markedly different from the original version and with the PS3 Slim changing it’s hardware make up substantially as well.

Will consumers accept that in 4 years time the new games will no longer be guaranteed to work on all consoles? Yes, it’s happened already with the massive installs that some games require along with Move and Kinect only games.

It’s the future whether we like it or not.
