Pachter can’t believe that Satoru Iwata still has a job

Michael Pachter is well known in the video game business for predicting trends and outcomes for his financial clients but as his fame has grown so has his confidence in making even more outlandish statements.

And today is no different with Pachter speaking at the game monetization summit in San Francisco and going out on a ledge to state

“I don’t know why Iwata is still employed,”

This is in regards to discussing how the Nintendo President has steadfastly refused to allow the Nintendo licences to be used on any other platform. Imagine the amount of money Nintendo could bring in if they released Mario and Pokemon onto the iPad at $5 a pop?

Michael’s main point is not a new one with many people wondering if Nintendo should look at leaving the hardware business and just focus on their amazingly solid core brands. However publicly stating that the president should be fired seems a bit harsh.

He also goes on to predict that the PlayStation 4 will beat the Xbox One in this generation but that is purely down to the cost factor with the PS4 coming in at $100 cheaper.

What do you think? Should Nintendo leave the hardware business and just become a software publisher?

I don’t have a problem with them keeping it on Nintendo devices. I have a problem with the lack of titles available. Also Pokemon needs to be on WiiU etc and not just handhelds

Nintendo need a new marketing department.

I am also getting that feeling that I had just before the Gamecube was about to become a kick ass console with exclusives like RE4, MGS Twin Snakes, Metroid Prime and soon to be Zelda TP…

BAM!!! Out of the blue Nintendo drop all support. Fool me once.

Ninty need to make a better console if they want to stay in that game. Their games are fun, but the console is worthless unless they do something to change that. Saying that, their 3DS is awesome. So, Ninty don’t have a great TV console, but they have great games and a great handheld.

They need to make a console that 3rd party devs want to make games on, that’s really the issue here.

Why are they forcing us to spend an extra R999 for a second screen?
Why is there no SKU where it is just the console?
Why are handhelds the same price as consoles?
Why is the 13 year old PS2 only 2 thirds its starting price?
Why is the 7year old 360 still the same price?
Why are $2million budget games selling for the same as a $265million budget game (GTAV)
Why are games now R750 at CNA?
Why are cars R1999 in GT6?
Why are the shadows in GT6 worse that GT5?

Those are but a few questions.

GAMING… Is really starting to piss me off and I understand why Gamers are now realising that the next best thing is not the next best thing. Lets play Golden Oldies instead. Final Fantasy 8 for the Win.

Gamer crash has been foretold. Videogaming will still march on… just without the inovative games that we use to LOVE. Let them enjoy their social media machines.

I feel you on these things. Its actually very sad what gaming has become. I remember how i used to look forward to playing my games and go back to them all the time. Nowadays games are good, but it doesnt have the same drive to let you come back and play again.

All too often that feeling happens before you finish a game nowadays. Back in the day, you played – even if it took months – until you finished.

Exactly that and its not really anything to do with what little time we have left to play games considering other responsibilities, but i so remember i couldnt stop thinking about a game, thinking of where to explore and what i might expect when i get there. Thinking oh damn i close to leveling up and getting to spend my level points to open up a skill tree thats been staring me in the face since the beginning of a game. Games were simple graphically back then, but the depth was so much more interesting and fun. Good example: Castlevania Symphony of the Night.

I’m thinking Baldur’s Gate & Planescape Torment, UFO (First one), that first Diablo, Doom, Doom 2 etc. There were many games that you just wanted “one more level” or “one more hour” and suddenly your weekend went by and you’re tired and hungry.

yes exactly. those games you mentioned as well. They just kept you playing and playing. Now i can play like an hour and im like ok leave for later. later = next week and so forth. The draw isnt there.

Pretty much, even great games like Far Cry 3 or Assassin’s Creed, there’s just no desire really to go back.

I never understood that. As much as I loved Vaas, I sold it. I still do not know why.

Odd. Yet I can restart Mass Effect over and over.
I think it is important to give the player more personal creation over a good protag.
Some of the Protags of recent are real chops and FPS does not immerse the Protag. Playing Skyrim in third person is so much better for example.

Please don’t remind me of Skyrim. I’m currently bitching at Sargon for making me want the game again. I traded mine in, but I’ve been wanting to play it again.

I think we have got the the point in gaming where the tech escalation is slowing down and we are now slowing down that hunting instinct of hording the next best thing. We are only now realising what gems we actually have stored away in the attic.

It explains why so many old games are getting the HD treatment. Like movies and music, everything has been done.

Actually I think we’re getting to the point where people are realising that in the ever enduring push for better LOOKING games, they forgot what made games great. Now, they’re realising that graphics really means shit. The indie scene has shown that to many.

Just a pity the new gen of teen gamers do not understand that. They would rather hammer the X button and watch Lightning kick ass for 30hours in a shallow narrative than think.
Also, we had Trump Cards at school, COD is now the interactive version. Very addictive and thanks to the $$$$$ its making only expect the Indie scene to give the older gamers what we want.

I think in CoD’s case, and Fifa, they’re played by Jocks. You know, those mindless dudes who could think of only playing with balls and beer, and banging the next chick, bru. Not a brain cell between them. It really does make sense.
