When the 3DS launches in Japan next month, the single Nintendo game available will be Nintendogs + Cats which, you guessed correctly is much like Nintendogs on the DS, only with an additional feline element.

As it turns out, according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata and prducer Hideki Konno, during development idea were toyed about with that included the possibility of Nintenhorses and Nintendolphins. So why then, did they settle on the decidedly more domestic kittycat?

“During development of 3DS Nintendogs, Shigeru Miyamoto got a cat,” Hideki Konno told the folks assembled at the Nintendo World event. And you know, what Shiggy wants, Shiggy gets.

If you were a fan of the original Nintendogs, the new one boasts some pretty interesting features – beyond the addition of a little bit of pussy. the first is camera support, coupled with face recognition. You’ll no longer have to look like a complete and utter pillock, calling out to your virtual pet in public; it’ll start recognising you. You can also take 3D pictures of your faux furry friends and share them with other users. you’ll also be able to place your imaginary pets in real life locations, using augmented reality.

Also new? Instead of the static images that made up the eyes in the last game, there are now creepy realistic eyeballs that apparently react appropriately. Ugh.
