Piracy not to blame for poor game sales

Nintendo, the firm that isn’t the least bit shy of throwing everything including the kitchen sink at pirates have shocked us all by admitting that poor game sales cannot simply be put down to piracy.

According to Nintendo’s CEO, Satoru Iwata

“I do not think we should attribute bad software sales solely to piracy”

He then goes on to state

“Even with piracy, as long as we can create products which can attract attention from many consumers and which can greatly entertain them, that software can make it to the number one position of the hit software sales chart.

So, we would like to consider it from both perspectives simultaneously. It is true there is always the influence of piracy, but it is important for us to increase the number of our consumers who are willing to shell out their money to purchase our products.”

It’s heartening to know that Nintendo still realise that no matter how evil and troublesome piracy is that nothing actually beats quality titles.

The fact is, according to my warped logic, that pirates won’t buy a game no matter how cheap or good it is. They have some weird inbuilt belief that it’s okay to steal the games because hey Nintendo’s got enough money anyway so it won’t matter.

Or it’s just the fact that their parents never embedded a decent morality system into them and now they are the pariahs of society, either way there isn’t much Nintendo can do about it now apart from continuing to create great games and chasing the pirates down by any means necessary.

Nintendo are planning on ramping up the anti-piracy protection on the 3DS which helps to increase the cost of the device so thank your local pirate for that one… I give the new measures 30 days at most though.

PS: If it was missed we don’t support piracy of any kind at Lazygamer… we do however support naked ninja’s (NSFW)

Make all games MP and Online only, with codes.

Much like Yahtzee (zero punctuation), I believe a game can’t stand on MP alone, if MP and online are truly the future of our beloved hobby, then I’m taking up baking, archery or fencing.

The majority of the people I know who pirate are decent people. They have a strong sense of morality.

On the other hand, the people I know that don’t pirate are the ones with f’ed up senses of right and wrong. The kind that smoke weed, do underage drinking + sex and generally are immoral people. So I don’t think piracy has anything to do with a person’s system of beliefs.

I never mentioned beliefs I mentioned morality. I personally don’t find someone smoking weed an immoral person, same goes for sex and drinking. It’s their body and they have the right to do whatever they want to with it.

Granted if they are underage then it gets into a grey area as parents need to help them understand the possible outcomes of these pursuits.

Ah, I think I might have misunderstood you 🙂
I just think the total opposite of people who do drugs, etc. , mainly because I’ve seen what it does to them.

Generally speaking: Taking drugs and becoming an alcoholic lead to immoral behaviour. But that’s something for a totally different discussion, so lets leave it at that 🙂

That’s the thing about morals though, everyone’s got their own and we don’t all agree on them…

I personally think I am part of an incredibly moral family but I have been told before that our house is a house of sin so I guess you can’t please them all 😐

Sell games for R150, lock the MP content. If you want to play MP, you need to purchase R400 odd rands worth of XBL / PSN points.
