The Xbox One revealed

Xbox

After eight years of current-generationing, Microsoft is finally ready to move on and look towards the future. With Nintendo having fired the first shot in the next-gen war with the Wii U, Sony hit back with the Playstation 4 earlier this year. And from the rear, comes the Xbox . We’ll be updating as news arrives, so stay awhile, and listen!

And we are a go! The lights are bright, the excitement is high and people want to see more than just a controller tonight! Various Microsoft developers and Steven Spielberg talk the creation of Xbox in the opening video. “We’re about to change entertainment forever… again”.

Don Mattrick is first on the stage tonight, and talks about the original Xbox and the Live service. “I’ve spent my entire career in interactive entertainment and I’ve never been more excited than I am today”. Mattick confirms that new things are coming to the Xbox 360 at E3, but this is most likely the end of the road for that console.

Mattrick hits us with some general PR fluff, “All in one system for games, TV, and entertainment. Future with hardware, software and services with you in the center”. And the console is now known as the Xbox One. “The ultimate all-in-one entertainment experience” Pics!

Xbox One will feature a 360 style controller, Kinect and cloud tech, and is voice activated. We’re shown the console responding to voice commands, pretty quickly in a live demo. The dashboard so far looks very familiar to the current one.  “The ultimate all-in-one entertainment experience”, we’re told.

Kinect is everywhere with this console. Imagine pinching and pulling on an iPad, but in your own space, and you’d have a good idea what the console is capable of. It’s called Snap Mode. Snap Mode allows multiple programs to run at once on the console. Such as watching a movie while browsing the net in a separate column. Xbox One also has Skype now, and includes group video calls. Not bad.

 xbox one 3

TV stations and series are shown running on Xbox One, but it’s for content that most likely won’t be available locally. Marc Whitten appears to talk about future-proofing the console. Xbox One has 8GB of RAM, a Blu-Ray drive and features “near silent” operation.

Xbox One has three operating systems; Xbox, the Windows kernel and a third system that combines the two for multitasking features

The new Kinect on the Xbox One has been “completely redesigned”, and has faster voice recognition and increased accuracy. “This is rocket science stuff”, Whitten says.

 xbo1

The new Kinect can detect your shoulder movements and even your heartbeat. That’s some big tech. But more importantly, we’re talking about the controller now. The Xbox One controller has been updated with “40 design innovations”. It now has Impulse triggers, a new d-pad thank the gods and an improved battery life. All of this, also tracked by the new Kinect.

 xbo2

The new Xbox Live will also be powered by over 300,000 servers. This is bigger than the internet…in 1999, Whitten tells us. Next up, Andrerw Wilson from EAa to tell us about the four games that are being worked on for the Xbox One: UFC, FIFA, NBA and American Football in the form of Madden.

EA talks games, using a new engine for sports games called ignite. It looks real pretty.

Forza Motorsport 5 officially announced for Xbox One by Phil Spencer. It’s pure car porn.

Alan Wake developer Remedy is revealed to be developing a game for Xbox One by the name of Quantum Break. It’s described as a supernatural thriller, and time looks like it will play a major feature in it.

quantum break

15 exclusive games promised for first 12 months of Xbox One, 8 of which will be brand new IP. 343 Industrie’s Bonnie Ross then appears to tell us that Microsoft has a new Halo project in the pipeline. A TV series that Steven Spielberg himself attached to it. The show will have the format of a “premium television series”. And then I switch off when Microsoft starts talking about Football. I believe rugby is similar to it, except it’s played by men.

Xbox One will be launched worldwide “later this year”. Nothing is said of an exact date or pricing yet. The show is wrapping up, but not before we see one more premiere. Call of Duty: Ghosts. But ignore that, because we have our own feature on that game at eight PM tonight.

I am excited because it is something new. I said before last night that I was leaning towards getting a SONY, I was a SONY fan before the 360. But I will wait and see, as most of what people are saying in this thread have heard someone say something who heard it from his mate who heard it from… I couldn’t believe the BS I was reading on twitter as the announcement was being made, live… Assumptions, people blasting no tec talk, then when there was, the same people would say MOVE on. It wasn’t the best announcement at all, but people had already made up their minds on whether they were going to be suitably impressed or not. I am still on the fence though.

Hahaha luv the fact that that is all the Xbots have against the PS4 launch “Oh they didnt show what the console looks like”, so fricken what atleast they showed what it can do in terms of games, in depth. Which is more than can be said for the feeble attempt at a console reveal that was the Xbox One reveal haha.

One! Really that is what they came up with, what did they hire the marketing guys from Calvin Klein. It does look pretty, but I think we’ll only know something once an actual independent gets to play and review it.
And saying future proof means that you don’t actually know what the hell you are talking about, in fact it might be worth getting one of these so that you can sue Microsoft for misrepresentation when they bring out there next console, probably in a lot less than eight years.

Sony probably did it on purpose. Since it allows them at a later date to get everyone hyped up about their console again. As it is one of the biggest events of E3 will be the PS4 public reveal. Also Sony still has unnamed titles for the launch of their console.

Agreed. They can then RE-PRE-release building more hype. Actually very clever marketing. I just hope it’;s not because they actually don’t have all their tec in a console sized format. One thing to say you have 8 gigs this, 4 thermal coupling GPU dylithium crystal that, when it’s sitting in a 5 MASTER RACE PC sized package. Really hope they are not sitting in some bunker, ALA Hitler scene, scratching their heads thinking, right, how do we put this awesome machine into a smaller package… hehe

They wouldn’t have released their video yesterday if it wasn’t ready. Its just clever marketing. With both consoles having almost identical specs I hope we see some actual cross platform gaming coming out of this. Both developers like to fuel the console wars, but it would be great if we could have a combined gaming community.

To echo what I said to James, SONY right now seems to be taking an approach that speaks to me someone that buys gaming consoles for gaming and not some all in one set top box, with features that probably won’t work locally anyway. M$ could not give a shit about wooing gamers like they did with the 360 and SONY right now does, if you compare the two reveals its clear which one was aimed @ gamers. I mean I have no doubt that PS4 will do all the same crap anyway but they didn’t spend 2 hours showing me ESPN promos and Kinect crap they showed the actual exclusives…

Completely disagree with you. I thought MS were showing just as much interest in gaming, if not more, than SONY. SONY, for their console announcement video, didn’t show a console. Didn’t share their vision for their console. And their 2 highlights was a PC build of a MULTIPLATFORM game being played on a PC, and an exclusive PS4 game being played on a PC with PS4 like specs. They did that at their PS3 announcement, and if you remember correctly, it was all a sham.

MS show their vision for the console. How they’re setting out to be different, and the proceed to tell how they are opening things up and investing in gaming companies. Followed by their announcement of 15 hardcore exclusives for the console in its first year, 8 of which are new IPs, and you will see all of them over the next few weeks and at E3. I honestly thought MS were going to flop this one, but from what each company has said and shown, GAMERS should be more excited by the XBOX ONE right now. Fanboys though will continue to ignore MS.

          • DarthofZA

            May 22, 2013 at 07:33

Before it gets taken out of context. Gamers should be more excited by what MS are doing with the console now than they were before the announcement. Not saying they should be more excited for this than the PS4.

I am at a flummex though as to how people can be upset about last night’s launch more so than the Sony launch. E3 is around the corner so everyone, including writers in the industry KNEW there was going to be very little show of games, we need to wait for that. He was hating on stuff that wasn’t even said! Then when something really interesting was mentioned, like the 3 OS system innovation, silence. People went into this with their minds set, not with their minds ready to look. And as you said, I am hating this idea that I cannot lend OVG a game, that’s total bullshit. Yes that can be easily argued gadooi!

More actual games was shown, more actual details of future services were shown (not to mention more innovative and promising ones at that and not just the generic TV/Skype/Social bullshit) and Sony actually divulged into details in crafting the console and how they made it powerful and easy to use. This was jus an FU from M$ where they showed a bunch of sports games that will be multiplat anyway and they ended of with the biggest multiplat of them all.

Not to mention whoopdie doo, yay another Forza and Halo, exactly what we need a racer that cant decide if it wants to be an arcade racer or a simulator so it just does both half-assed and a shooter franchise thats been massively overrated from the very start. Plus Ill believe those 15 exclusives in one year and 8 new IPs when I see them, cause I wander how many of those will be timed exclusivity or just small XBLA titles (and if they mean calendar or fiscal year).

Plus with the PS4 having the camera with the console as well and having the Vita/PS4 and/or DS4touchpad combos I see the PS4 getting the best of both worlds from the WiiU and the XboxOne (pfft, wow I just cant help but laugh when I here that name I thought Wii was funny, then I thought WiiU was hilarious but XboxOne?! That jus takes the bakery nevermind the cake).

I mean if they couldnt even compete with Sony’s reveal with so much time to prepare you just have to take that 15 exclusive, 8 new IP claim with atleast a little bit of salt, if they have so much up their sleeve why did they fuck this reveal up so badly. Plus Sony did reveal their console on monday night (kinda was a bit fuzzy, but I think that was also just an indication that the box is not important which can be seen in that sneaky google advert they did) and they themselves said a box isnt important its what that box can do.

Sony maybe didn’t show the box, but they actually detailed the hardware without fear of giving away something they should not… MS didn’t even mention GPU, Ram type, CPU Type, but told us how in future processing may be offloaded to servers… Why on earth would they say that? I promise you, Xbox One cannot compete at brute hardware level, and that’s why 20 min was wasted showing off hand gestures and voice commands…

Don’t get me wrong… Xbox One will be a success, I just believe that PS4 will be the better gaming system, regardless of what the box looks like…

sigh, I posted you such a nice long reply, and now it’s just gone… Anyways, for some it’s in the details, compare the detail given on the xbox site to this: http://za.playstation.com/media/7ngkAGoJ/PlayStation4_Specification.pdf

What I liked about the PS4 reveal, is that they didn’t just say “our system will be good at gaming”, they explained why, and detailed the journey of how they got there etc. It was all about the gamer and the developers ease of creation. They explained the choice for each component, and how it benifits the gamer and game creator. Go watch that reveal again…

I don’t give a crap about TV, talking to my console or using hand gestures to operate it. I care about games, and how the console will improve my gaming. Sony’s reveal told me and showed me the detail I needed to form an educated opinion about the PS4.

So my choice is made. Others will care about having a cylon TV, and will opt for the XBOX One, and thats their choice and right. I’m just saying, as a gamer, the PS4 is way more appealing at this point… But, lets see how E3 goes for both. Remember, when PS3 launched, everyone said it would fail, so anything can happen, but my money is on Sony.

I totally agreed the only thing they showed that Sony didn’t was the actual box, what about the actual games? All I heard was TV this Music that. They had more than enough time to actually put together an adequate presentation for gamers, this was more like something I would expect from Apple or Samsung and to me that speaks volumes.

I don’t like Halo, so a Halo movie/series doesn’t even get me 1% excited, a new flashy Kinect also doesn’t get me excited…. So their “reveal” had nothing for me, and I suspect for a lot of us… They missed a great opportunity, I own a Xbox 360 and a PS3…. But I will only be owning a PS4 in the next gen…. I too don’t play CoD, so not interested in Ghost, I am very interested in the tech they showcased, the 3 OS that run at the same time and the server, cloud idea though. I was not expecting ANY games to be shown to be honest as E3 is just around the corner.

I don’t care if the new Xbox One is covered in sparkles and has a pink finish, but I do like to know the thing is actually near completion and that the announcers are not jut trying to jump in front of another company for marketing purposes. That was… underwhelming to be honest… And with the specs putting it head to head with the Playstation 4 directly there’s going to be very little wiggle room between the two. Last gen they all had an initial hook, something unique to appeal to certain people. But there’s virtually no difference between the two now. My feeling is that this round is going to come down to price more than anything, because yes exclusives are nice, but on balance they are both going to have games worth playing on them. And when you add in high-end gaming PCs and steam’s push to ‘big picture’ gaming you’ve got three systems with very little to set them apart.
It’s actually a good thing that the Wii U is occupying it’s own space because if it had tried to be more hard core it would have been blown out of the water as an also-ran, at least this way they’ll still have a place in the family markets (once they actually have some games). Maybe as an amusing aside to the eye-candy babies but still viable for the company. My prediction is that this will be the last generation for at least one of these 2 (xbox/ps), I’ll put money down on that if you want.

They didn’t bother to clarify on the details behind the chipset. We have an octocore something, with 8GB of some kind of RAM, and some kind of integrated GPU. The RAM was rumoured the be DDR 3, which is inferior to Sony’s offering. Not to mention, Kinect will take a lot of that processing power now that it’s confirmed that it’s always active. Xbox put on mah footballs! No! ‘Murican footballs!

I have to agree. I see the current generation of gamers as rather tired and angry. They, including me, are looking for that nostalgic past hit, which came with new games and newer tech. Now we have CoD making our old lover a commercial slut, and that is not all. New things come out and we hate, automatically. We’ve become so cynical that when a console launch js just that, we say fuck that. If SONY wins, it’s going to be because the gamer wins. If MS win, it’s going to be because they are going for full on entertainment (not just games) dominance. I will wait before shooting from the hip like so many on here today.

Yeah totally… it’s like so many people are actually getting fed up of being spoonfed the next shiny thing and being expected to like it just because it’s the next shiny thing. For anyone who’s been gaming for longer than 10 years, we still remember a time when there was something magical about a new game being released, and the journey of discovery in playing that game, and heck even being burned by a bad game sometimes. Now it’s just every year we bring out the same games with a dash of new paint. Just about every new AAA game is a sequel to something else and it’s getting harder and harder to get excited about them. Our consoles just offer more of the same but with more power. No risks and no initiative from the big companies.

I also hate that everything is expected to do everything nowadays. My phone must take photos, surf the internet, play games. My consoles must be able to surf the internet, play videos and make phone calls. My camera must have GPS and HD video. My car must be able to play DVDs and take phone calls. What is wrong with something only being good at one job? Imagine if xbox cut out the crap that no one is going to buy the console for anyhow and either spent more money on making better games or even dropped the price of the console. But then again I’ve been gaming for more than twenty years, so maybe it’s just me being an old curmudgeon.

While I agree with you mostly, smartphones are the best thing to happen this past decade+. It’s the fridges, cars, consoles etc jumping on the bandwagon without good reason that ruin it.

I think that consoles need to remember their place in the living room, and expand on what they are, instead of trying to be like your smartphone (or set top box in this example). I emphatically agree that consoles should remain game-centric devices. I do think there is room for evolution, such as cloud features, and who knows what else?

Oh my soul, I suspected that MS may screw up their conference or reveal or whatever, but didn’t expect it to be this bad.

    Highlights of the show:

    1) I like the looks, but from pictures taken after the event, it looks a lot more shitty, green and like a 90’s VCR.

    2) I’m not physically disabled and will be able to operate a TV remote to change the fricken channel, but thank you for thinking about the fat ‘Mericans who ain’t able to do so by giving people the option to change to TV and back to your game with voice commands.

    3) the “instant” switching between a movie and my music is awesome. This way, if the soundtrack to whatever I’m watching sucks, I can play my own music in the background, instantly!! I can also Skype with my friends, and watch a movie AT THE SAME TIME!! I’m totally ADHD like that.

    4) Awesome, some games! I get to play a exclusive mode in Fifa. Faith in MS restored!!

    5) COD lies about revolutionary and awesome tech and the best online community…uh yeah right.

    6) Forza 5 – Looks almost as good as GT6 😉 No real gameplay, showed new McLaren.

    7) Quantum Break – Has a Beyond: Two souls vibe to it. Looks great though!

    8) 15 exclusives! Halo 5, Forza 5, Cod DLC pack 1 – 5 timed exclusives, 4 modes in Fifa, Quantum Break, Halo dance dance GO GO!!

    9) Permanent Kinect for everything. MS IS IN YOUR HOME!!!!

I’m out. Had all the consoles this generation (no WiiU, it isn’t even a new console, just a extra controller :P) but for the next gen, I’ll use the money for my MS-TV Entertainment NFL fantasy league MERICA YEAH box to buy games for my PS4.

Forza 5 will sell this system in its first year, halo has gotten stale, played though 4 once and then put it away, just like with 3, they need to stop beating the dead horse and move along. I really hope they opt for a better option when considering racing wheels, finding my xbox wheel was a nightmare and everyone wants to charge an arm and a leg because its the only good ff race wheel on the 360 unless you want to pay big money for a fantec set up. I think anyone who runs out and buys any “next-gen” counsle when it first drops is will be sore and upset that they did so, first xbox caught fire, second on catches fire but less often and rrod’s every 3 months if your lucky, they say third times a charm though

A very mediocre presentation. Was listening to The Verge post discussion, apparently the event was very small. Only a couple of rows of people and a lot of Microsoft employees in the back helping to cheer on in the silent awkward moments.

At least they touched on a lot of features but it felt like they rushed through everything. On the same note it would be interesting to see how many of the features work outside of America and especially with slow or no internet connectivity.

To bad they didn’t show game play footage in all the games where you actually could see the player taking control.

I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now and rather wait for E3 before passing concrete judgement.

Compare the reveal of the 360 to the “0ne” they are world apart. As for the 15 exclusives am willing to gamble that 90% of them are either Kinect or Arcade games…

I think there is more to it than fanboyism. People are genuinely disappointed.

            List of reasons:

            – Multiplayer paywall is still there.
            – Compulsory Kinect Functionality.
            – No used games unless you pay a extra fee.
            – No real gameplay revealed.
            – Focus on entertainment services that need a extra add on and wont make it out of the US.
            – No BC.
            – Focus on casual instead of the core which are the early adopters.
            – Fake applause from MS employees at the conference.

SONY Shares went up 10% in the last hour while MS’s shares went down after this conference.

So you will also know that before the PS3 was released they released grossly inflated stats out there too? Or that through out the life of PS3 they were far superior in hardware to the xbox360, but because of their poor coding in their development kits, most of their games looked worse? Come on man, really? Better stats automatically means better games? Wow…

          • Argentil

            May 21, 2013 at 23:59

I would like a source about these grossly-inflated stats. The cell infrastructure was touted as impressive proprietary technology, and so there was little in the way of solid detail to scale against it pre-release. If I recall correctly, the Cell chip was the first processor to perform as, or similarly to a quad core, prior to it’s invention. The technology WAS impressive. Sony’s SDK’s were not. They were lengthy, and in Japanese. This is no longer the case because the PS4 was developed in the US by Systems Architect Mark Cerny, who is a legend in the industry. If you watched Sony’s conference, you would know that they have gone to great pains to eliminate, and even turn around the stigma they built up during the PS3’s early release.

He did irreparable damage to Sony. He fired off some of their most fresh R&D talent. Sony will take years to recover, if ever.

Leave a message…they announced 4 sports games with EA, Forza and a brand new science fiction game. Along with the fact they are releasing 18 exclusive in it’s first year. PS was launched two months ago, MS today, 3 weeks before E3, something that would make them look bloody stupid. Please use some critical thinking before downvoting someone who has been talking about this on this site for YEARS.

We’re not downvoting you, we’re having a discussion. The conference was a disappointment because there was little focus on what really interested us gamers. Games, how the console performs with the aforementioned games, what features the console can add to these games. Smartglass interests me – It was mentioned in passing. No mention of an Xbox Live revision. Some stills/pre-rendered footage of a Forza and a Remedy game (the latter of which was barely touched upon). The time they spent farting around on ESPN and multiplatform titles we knew were coming, with timed-exclusive DLC (as usual), could have been spent on something interesting.

I am assuming YOU watched it? What about the way live scans your game files so that if youbwant to play coop it can find the best person who plays like you? I think that’s pretty clever. As is having every moment of game play playable so you can see and show what you’ve done? Not to mention the controller is haaat! 🙂

Did they take 2 minutes to explain how this process works, or show us what it may look like? No. This is what I’m saying. As it stands, it’s a pretty idea that may, or may not meet implementation. At least Sony bothered to mock up UI menus to convey how streaming features might work. It makes it more tangible.

I agree that the controller looks much nicer, if a bit less ergonomic than the previous one.

Ah, I see what you mean. Agreed. They went very quickly over the actual interface compared tonESPN and the like. I’m just not willing to go mad angry like many above because it has extra features. The new PS has a social share many hate the idea of, I think may be quite interesting. I was really positive after the ps4 (wouldnsaynlaunch, but as I was corrected above, tis not!) and was also excited after today. I understand what you mean, I think a lot of people, myself included, were waiting to be wowed. After 55 minutes, I was incredulous at how little Microsoft went into the best features. They laboured over the most trite rubbish, and speed-read through the good stuff, if even mentioning it at all. Sony’s share integration was more interesting to me than ESPN and American cable integration because I would use that share button, personally. Not for facebook integration, nor twitter, maybe for youtube let’s plays. I would love to have a friend overseas check out a great game I just bought and want them to purchase so we can play together. Or show a buddy how to flummox a tough boss. It’s more personal than a strategy guide, and way cooler.

But what if you want to bring a game disc to a friend’s house and play there? You’ll have to pay a fee—and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game—in order to use a game’s code on a friend’s account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison says.

“The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One,” he said. “They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live.”

Gotta say I’m quite annoyed with everyone being ‘underwhelmed’ by the event. From what I gather most of you are up in arms because they now also focus on entertainment as a whole and therefore will necessarily create mediocre hardcore gaming experiences. In short I think to make such a judgement call before it’s even in stores is without merit.

You can take it as the tide of fandom pushing back against the negativity surrounding Sony’s conference… partly. Otherwise the conference was pretty bland. Lots of multiplat titles, no real-time playthroughs, no Xbox live improvements detailed (a lot of people want them to pull up their pants in that department). Most importantly, they neglected to address the main concerns surrounding the console. Everything was covered by journalists post-event. Always-online: no (no details), Backwards compatibility: No, Used Games: No.

Exactly why I’m getting irritated here. There is no using of heads going on, just hate, which is killing this industry. then comments like “I want to see more games at a console launch” are made and the entire point is lost. I sometimes wish these companies would FORCE the (and my) older generation to go back to NES while I play PS2. Screw all you haters out there, as this chap said, just cus it is running slower due to other entertainment uses does not mean it will be shit. Matter of point SONY lying to us about the PS3 specs defore it was released and the fact the PS3 was always more powerful than the 360!

No one’s saying the box will be shit. People are saying the conference was pretty bad. MS underperformed, now they have a lot of expectation for E3. The general hubbub is concerning Microsoft’s lack of interest in wowing the gamer. If you’re satisfied with a couple of exclusives, more timed DLC and multiplats (compared to Sony’s conference which had a clear message aimed at impressing it’s gaming market), that’s fine. I think the noise is good, it got Always-Online banished imo. Make a noise and MS will aim to impress.

As it is, Sony made a lot of mistakes last gen, they have something to prove this gen. Nintendo have rested on their laurels to the point of releasing the WiiU, with no software support. MS are somewhere inbetween, moving in their own direction of ‘court the entertainment consumer, the gamers will support us anyway.’

I’d like to add that Nintendo are already taking steps to up their game because of their terrible misstep with the WiiU. Obtaining the Bayonetta sequel as a WiiU exclusive is something I never would have imagined Ninty capable of. They have also secured 3 other exclusive games from SEGA. If Nintendo had, had another free pass, as with the Wii, they would have gotten by with more of the same. A gimmick and some cheaper tech won’t support you every time. They will work at it, but I don’t think the WiiU will ever recover this generation. They will maintain third place, with average, if slightly lower, sales.

Subjectively the PS4 just seems more hardcore game focused console. Which is what consoles are for in the first place.

The Ouya isn’t the revolution people think it will be. There will be some pirated ports, media streaming possibilities, limited android games (so far) and a few other niche appeals. Why would you buy one if you have a current gen console? Certainly not for the legitimate games catalogue. If you’re a great lover of open source applications and have the knowledge to utilize it, the Ouya will appeal to you over a closed garden current gen console. If you’re a pirate, it will kind of appeal to you. I don’t see the market being big enough to validate this thing’s existence.

Maybe I’m showing my age here, but I love the look of the new console; it reminds me of the Bang & Olufsen hi-fi components. I couldn’t be bothered to watch more than a few minutes of the presentation though, and I didn’t even bother to watch the Sony one at all, because frankly it’s just not important to me. Both systems are going to be worth looking at, both are going to have good games, and both are going to be loaded with stuff I neither want nor need, so there’s very little to chose between them in the end. My only real big negative with the One is lack of backwards compatibility, and that’s more from a convenience aspect than anything.

I have a historical bias towards the XBox, & will likely get that one first if I get either. But I’ll also be quite keen to pick up the PS4 at some point too because it’ll also be a good system with some good exclusives, until I remind myself that it’ll be expensive, as are the games, & that I only have so many HDMI inputs on my home theater system.

And – most importantly – that I barely turn on my current XBox anyway because 99% of my gaming is on PC………

Does it matter how the thing looks??? (And lets be honest the X1 look like crap) I want to know what is in store for me gaming wise, I don’t care about things that won’t make my gaming experience any better!!! I don’t like Halo, so a Halo movie/series doesn’t even get me 1% excited, a new flashy Kinect also doesn’t get me excited…. I don’t play COD, so that doesn’t work… I am however a big ass Fifa fan, but I don’t play Ultimate team…. So their “reveal” had nothing for me, and I suspect for a lot of us… They missed a great opportunity, I own a Xbox 360 and a PS3…. But I will only be owning a PS4 in the next gen…. Cause they care about me the gamer, to hell with how the thing looks… My consoles is behind my couch, no one can see them!!!

    Generation X

The evolution of the Xbox as a multimedia device directly correlates
with the the need for Microsoft to reach a broader audience. James Lui, a
designer who worked with Microsoft between June 2010 and March 2011 to
define the roadmap from 2011 to 2013 and beyond, states on his portfolio that “the console business is transforming and living room entertainment is waiting to be redefined”.

“With a new ecosystem of devices, readily accessible content through
the cloud, and natural user inputs such as the Kinect, Microsoft needs
to reposition the Xbox to serve an audience beyond traditional gamers,”
    he said.

“Microsoft is dedicating all TV resources to Xbox in a continued mission to make it the premium entertainment service”

The ownership of the living room has always been a primary motivation
for Microsoft and its ambitions for the Xbox; it is the reason for the
widening of the Xbox 360 remit from video games to include music, TV and
    movies.

“The reason why Microsoft launched the Xbox in the first place was to
make sure that it was starting the battle for who was going to control
the living room,” explained Nicholas Lovell, an analyst and consultant
    who writes on GamesBrief.

Microsoft has attempted to make inroads through numerous avenues.
Although it settled on the gaming console strategy, it previously made a
billion dollar investment in ComCast. It would later sell its entire stake in the company, but the move was a clear indication of its greater ambition.

“Our vision for connecting the world of PCs and TVs has long included
advanced broadband capabilities to deliver video, data and
interactivity to the home,” Bill Gates said at the time.

“Comcast’s integrated approach to cable distribution, programming and
telecommunications complements that vision of linking PCs and TVs.”

Microsoft also recently sold its IPTV service, Mediaroom, to tech
firm Ericsson. In a follow-up statement it said the move allowed it “to
commit 100 percent of its focus on consumer TV strategy with Xbox.”

“Microsoft is dedicating all TV resources to Xbox in a continued
mission to make it the premium entertainment service.” said Yusuf Mehdi,
senior vice president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment
    Business.

“We believe the future of home entertainment is one where TV becomes
more simple, tailored and intelligent. We believe the best is yet to
    come for this industry.”

I for one love the idea of complete integration across all media devices, on center piece that controls all your media. I don’t have a PC so to have a console that i can do all this on will be pretty cool. this all of coarse depends on how much Microsoft make pay for it.

    Microsoft’s Phil Harrison

But what if you want to bring a game disc to a friend’s house and play there? You’ll have to pay a fee—and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game—in order to use a game’s code on a friend’s account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison says.

“The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One,” he said. “They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live.”

It is confirmed. You can never get old and grow out of Videogames even tho it feels like it is time. It is the industry that has become to big for its boots and used US GAMERS to give all of our money to give them better platforms to become EVEN MORE GREEDY and leave US CORE GAMERS on the way side while they play catch up with other forms of media that are raking in the money.

USED. They even admit it in this article, that gamers are their ticket to heaven.

Nice to know that it is not me that has gotten sick and tired of videogames but THE FAT CATS got sick and tired of making less money for our niche hobby and moved on.

Yeah, it’s really fucked up. I just get an image of MS taking a shotgun out and blowing their foot off.

You can’t even play a bit on a game borrowed from a mate, you have to pay this activiation fee kak. I think even if yuo have two accounts on the same XBox you have to pay to activate on the 2nd account because games are linked to accounts!

Probably too early to tell but I think Xbox have fucked up mightily with this xbox “one”. Even the name makes me laugh my head off.

I think they’ve missed the boat. Bad idea linking games to accounts, thereby forcing you to pay for 2nd hand games. I also think the new controller sucks donkey balls, it reminds me of that Ouya controller.

One thing is for sure, I won’t be getting the next XBOX.

So if the PS3 was R6000 6 years ago, expect this to be more as people are more than willing to pay even more these days for cell phones and tablets.

But, out of your R9000 only R3000 is devoted to gaming.

      PS2 FOREVER 🙂

I wonder who the down vote troll is… Anyhoo… I’m excited about BOTH consoles, even though I wouldn’t be able to afford either of them until about 3 years into the gen, much like the current gen.

I’m waiting to see what happens at E3, and when exactly they’ll be releasing these consoles, but from past experience it’ll be just before December for the Christmas rush, and of course we’ll only get them for sale here 3 months later (unless if they pull their fingers out their butts and be friendly to SA).

Both the consoles seem huge, but the Xbox One looks massive looking at the pics, a lot bigger than the original 360 and PS3, but they’ll revise and tweak and make them smaller again.

This thing about “OOOOH we have exclusives!!!” is just irritating to me, I wish game devs could just release everything for every platform and make us all happy instead of having to have all the current gen consoles to play the games you want, but that’s just, as I said, wishful. I really don’t want to have to buy a PS4 and X1 just so I can have Fable, God of War, etc…

so whats up with the stupid internet connection that you require! yes you dont have to be always online, but you stil need internet for the new Xbox One! So its turning into the same concept as pc games, where you have to activate the game online then you can play it offline! many people in SA won’t buy this because many don’t have internet in SA. I was so happy with the announcement ..until they said…INTERNET!!

About what was expected from XBox. Everything but the games, which is fine, I expect they will use e3 for that. The pictures they showed had average geraphics even by todays standards, nothing next gen about them. Ad pre rendered, I wasn’t impressed. They really need to improve XBox live a lot to justify the price.

I have no interest in sticking my dstv feed into a gaming console , you will not be able to record content anyway. I have a dedicated 3d monitor just for gaming and with the prices of tv’s going down , i’m sure many others do too. They should be interested in not taking over the living room , but the gaming room.
