Rumours have been swirling for ages, pointing to Sony getting it’s next-gen console going the cloud-based route. those rumours have just received a shot in the arm – with Sony announcing that it’s purchased OnLive competitor Gaikai.

The financially troubled mega-corporation has announced it purchased the streaming service for  For $380 million.

“By combining Gaikai’s resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE’s extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences,” Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said in a statement.

“SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internetconnected devices.”

Sony intends to “establish a cloud service and expand its network business by taking full advantage of Gaikai’s revolutionary technology and infrastructure including data centers servicing dozens of countries and key partners around the world.” It hasn’t said if it intends to utilise the streaming technology in its next generation console – rumoured to be called Orbis – but that certainly parallels with the rumours so far. It could be interesting; perhaps they’ll use the PS4 – in addition to being its own unique system – as a set top Gaikai box, opening up 20 years of Pc gaming on the next generation console.

That would certainly be better, as far as I’m concerned, than making the next console run entirely off the cloud. There’s also the possibility that Sony could implement Gaikai game streaming in to their next line of Bravia TV’s – but that would be shotting themselves in the foot a bit.
