Obsidian hit with project cancellations, layoffs

Screw you guys, I'm going home.

It looks like RPG maker Obsidian is the latest established company to feel the sting of the current dodgy economic climate. According to a report on Joystiq, a project cancellation at the company – reportedly a Microsoft published title – has lead to layoffs.

"Another project canceled, this time for a future next-gen project and the layoffs impacted that team, plus the existing South Park team," a source told Joystiq. "Approximately 20-30 people from all disciplines, including one person who started yesterday, as well as one who started last week."

Job for a day? That’s got to sting. The cancelled project was apparently code-named “North Carolina,” and was set to be a Microsoft exclusive for the next-generation of console hardware – but apparently the Redmond based company doesn’t like having exclusives. According to Obsidian’s forums, numerous people who’re now former Obsidian staffers were working on South Park RPG, though the title’s not been affected and is still being developed.
