Minecraft 2 scam briefly reaches the top of the Apple charts

Minecraft-Deux

There’re easily a million apps available on the Apple store at any given time, and 99% of them are rubbish. Thanks to a relatively open marketplace, Apple is more than happy to approve just about anything these days, provided that guns or breasts aren’t involved. Which means that there’s an entire marketplace filled with less than scrupulous developers who are more than happy to steal a few ideas.

But they may have picked on the wrong massively popular property this time, as Microsoft and Minecraft developer Mojang came down like a sack of adamantium bricks on one ballsy developer.

According to a Eurogamer report, Minecraft Pocket Edition 2 popped up on the Apple store, despite the fact that this game had about as much of a relation to the original Mojang developed property as Milli Vanilli’s claims of being actual singers. Minecraft 2 quickly hit the top ten of the Apple Charts, peaking at number 4, before it began a slow descent.

Naturally, Microsoft’s newly acquired Mojang studio ain’t happy, and have taken steps to assert some control over the errant use of their intellectual property. “It’s great that Minecraft has inspired people to create amazing things, but when a product attempts to dupe our community or exploit their enthusiasm for the game, it’s our responsibility to step in,” Mojang’s Owen Hill said to Eurogamer. “Our dedicated enforcement team are extremely busy!”

They’re not joking either, as Minecraft 2: Pocket Edition got swiftly booted off of the Apple marketplace a few hours ago. Created “Scott Cawthorn”, which sounds like a deliberate misspelling of Five Nights at Freddy’s creator ScottCawthon, Minecraft 2 is but one of many other games from a developer who makes a living by pilfering from other IPs.

And it’s not even a good copy either. Reviews aren’t exactly flattering, and are puzzled at the omission of blocks for a top-down swiping game that features Scorpion from Mortal Kombat battling it out with zombies. Pretty sure that’s not legal either, according to the hour of LA Law I watched last night.

a Zombie movie/game with Scorpion and other Mortal Combat characters would be bad ass though.
