I’m loving these sponsorship announcements for the DGL. It seems like they are getting all the big names to sign on with fantastic prizes. The good people over at SteelSeries are the latest to announce their support for the DGL, sweetening the pot for Dota 2 players.
The DGL has announced that SteelSeries will be sponsoring over R50k in cash and hardware prizes for the Dota 2 Championships. Man, it’s good to play Dota 2! ASUS is already sponsoring impressive motherboards, graphics cards and processors for the winners – now that machinery can connect with some fantastic SteelSeries hardware.
SteelSeries backs a number of pro eSports teams, including my international favorite, Na’Vi. They also sponsor Energy eSports and local shout caster, Kyle ‘Congo’ Wolmerans. Here is the statement about the sponsorship from Dan Sønderskov, Regional Marketing Manager for SteelSeries:

The South African gaming community has been through a lot of changes through the last couple of years, much like what we have seen before in other markets. These markets have since grown to become strong examples and leaders in the Pro Gaming arena. We are excited with the idea that we have already had a massive impact in developing Pro Gaming in South Africa and Globally. Furthermore we are honored to continue to support South Africa in this evolution that is Pro Gaming. In 2013 we were committed to giving back to the community and will continue to do so in the 2014 season. We want to thank Telkom again for putting all the effort into the DGL and the Championships and look forward to another hugely successful event.
So, what are the actual prizes? I mean, R50k in cash and and hardware could be just about anything. I reached out to our friends at SteelSeries, and while they can’t confirm the actual prizes at this point, it’s for a good reason. They want to give the latest and greatest hardware as prizes, which means that they will be giving away such cutting edge goodies that those products haven’t even been announced yet. The newest headset? The most clicky mouse? It remains to be seen. No matter what, those Dota 2 winners are going to walk away with some truly fantastic gear. It almost inspires me to start playing/training – anyone want to form a team with me?

Fewer than what the internet suggests. This isn’t as common as you’d expect if you read about dota online. Most of the decent players (in personality, not skill – 2 different subjects) are too busy enjoying dota to come online and spew hatred towards the rest of the community. The amount of really nice, friendly conversations I have in game far outnumbers the bad ones, and as mentioned the mute button is literally 2 clicks away – and improves your experience exponentially.

I honestly haven’t found many people that have been complete dicks … As long as you don’t take your frustrations out in team or open chat you will find most people to be decent … most anger in game is also due to that guys bad game more than yours… so I never take it personally if one guy has a hissy fit for a minute or two.
And yes … soooometimes I have come across a 12 year old who has just learnt his first ‘yo mamma’ joke … but blocking a persons chats takes 1 second… won’t hear from them again.
I only started Dota 2 last year December because, like you, heard terrible things about the community. Now I wish I started earlier.

Whyyyyyy DOTA 2…. just whhhyyyyy??!? I mean Battliefield 4, Starcraft 2, CS:GO etc I understand..but this game? Honestly DOTA is shit. that is all.
