GOTY Round up

Wow, giving out awards is hard work. We gave out a ridiculous amount on Friday, and we know you didn’t get to read them all. So, here they are in one place for you to rage at all throughout the holidays.

First up, all our caveats. When we say something is best for a platform, it has to be exclusive to that platform. No PC games that are also playable on PS4, no Xbox games that also came to the Vita. They have to be pure exclusives. Also, only games that we reviewed were eligible for prizes. That means, if we didn’t get a review copy/unit, it doesn’t make the list, even if it is a fantastic game/device. Be sure to read the original articles for explanations and honorable mentions. Okay, here goes!

Shadow of Mordor really cleaned up, as did Dragon Age: Inquisition. Good thing Darryn and I gave them awards at E3! You can just call us Nostradamus from now on. But really, there were a few truly excellent games this year, even if the rest of the time the releases (and patches and delays) were real disappointments.

Good set of awards there. Glad DA:I and Shadow cleaned up – they totally deserved it. Shoulda had a “Best Survival Horror” category too – Alien Isolation woulda cleaned up with that one… That game is chock-full of atmosphere. 🙂

Why is the games only those released in the last six months, there was way crappier games in the first six months. Thief comes to mind. Also think you cant rate a game if you don’t finish the game. Shadow of mordor is such a game, it start of with a bang, then it becomes boring just way to easy with limited story content. It is the one game I still need to finished because I got bored.
Is it a good game yes, is it brilliant no. Dragon age and destiny was by far the best games I played this year. Then there was Watchdogs, the game was just overhyped but actually a good game.
Shadow of mordor gets good ratings because the game was not hyped at all and no one knew what to expect.
The last of us on the PS4, really? It is a remake of an old game yes it is a good game but not brilliant finished it in 3 days.
The rating for the best game per console is a bit silly when the game is only released on that one console.

I agree with you 100% on Shadow of Mordor. If you check each of the separate award articles you’ll see they had honourable mentions as well.
Personally I would’ve picked some smaller games for my top rated games, but I understand that only “AAA” games are truly acknowledged most of the time because they’re the games everyone knows about and had tons of money put into.

Can’t agree that SoM got good ratings because it was a sleeper hit and had no hype…The game actually introduces new ideas and concepts that are insanely well executed. Yes it loses steam but DA:I, Destiny, Watch Dogs….are games I personally felt brought nothing new to the table. Yes they’re reallt good, but it was just more of the same in a different wrapping. Mordor’s world was fresh, characters were interesting, Uruk and captain system was brilliant and everything felt alive, like you didn’t matter, the world kept moving. Personally, SoM is GOTY though my personal GOTY is The Evil Within

I must be the only one who feels that SoM just wasn’t a fresh idea. It literally had 90% of its ideas brought over from Assassin’s Creed and Batman and given new names. Detective mode = Wraith mode etc.
The orcs, captain system, and controlling them was a nice new approach, I will admit. But that’s all. Even the movements of the orcs were identical to those of the thugs in Batman. And the story…what story?

It’s a great game, don’t get me wrong, but it won’t be my Goty, not even close.

          • Mandom (Umar)

            December 22, 2014 at 10:40

I would’nt say 90 percent. It actually has a good story and lore. Especially when finding those artifacts with a story attatched..I dont know. I just felt inmersed in the world because I haven’t experienced such a world yet. WD , DA:I and even Destiny just feels sooooo samey. Like I’ve been there A thousand times before

          • Captain JJ the engaged

            December 22, 2014 at 10:47

The lore is decent, as one would expect from LOTR, I can agree with that.
I played a lot of Batman, so it feels like Arkham City in Mordor to me. The nice thing about it is that I jumped into Shadow of Mordor and immediately had a handle on all the controls, because they were pretty much identical to Batman’s.
Still to play DA:I, so can’t comment there. I’m a big RPG fan though, so I probably have to get it, just can’t see me wasting all that time downloading the game through Origin.

            December 22, 2014 at 10:51

WTF, sleeper hit and not overhyped! This was one of the most overhyped games this year! And to be honest this is the worst game of the year I can remember in living history, I think 2014 was in general a very bad year for games, if you compare to previous years.

          • Mandom (Umar)

            December 22, 2014 at 10:47

There was no hype for this game prior to release. If you look at the way destiny or watch dogs were hyped, people hardly took note of this game. Once people started playing it the hype was spread tbrough word of mouth afterwards

          • Travis

            December 22, 2014 at 10:49

Hmm, I diasgree there were so many articles etc prior to the games release and I for one vas very hyped for it until I actually saw the gameplay. But yes not as hyped as Destiny or Watch dogs but still pretty high up there.

        • Gavin Mannion

          December 22, 2014 at 10:31

We didn’t only rate from the last 6 months, I think it just feels that way since most publishers hold back their top titles for the silly season.

Destiny has definitely turned out to be a marmite game, I think the game is magnificent but a few of the team find it extremely boring which is why it didn’t win much.

And we don’t rate any games (besides driving, sports etc) until they are finished. Apparently Shadow or Mordor blew people away.. it’s not my type of game though

If you’re a LOTR fan then one will enjoy SOM,I truly am enjoying it.

Destiny is ok,graphics are stunning, but there’s just not enough excitement around it anymore,it’s just DLC now.

AC Unity and others had a crap release due to all their bugs(my goodness),look at Drive Club, what a flop.

Next year there will be more contenders for awards.

But I’m happy Sunset Overdrive got in there, yay!

best game on a console (or PC) has to be exclusive or something like Shadow of Mordor/Dragon Age could have cleaned up every category. Also, there was tons of fighting – personally, Dragon Age is my game of the year, but I still adored Shadow of Mordor (until the very end when I was less impressed). I didn’t enjoy Watch Dogs, simply didn’t get sucked into it, so it didn’t get my vote for anything.
Plenty of games from early on in the year were nominated in categories, but didn’t win out in the end, probably because most studios save their best releases for the holiday periods.
And then there is Destiny, the marmite of games. People either love or hate it, and it seems that the majority of us weren’t overly impressed by it.
Oh, and remember, only games that we reviewed qualified for awards, so there were plenty of indies games that we simply didn’t get review samples of so we never got to play, review and love and then give an award.

I have a friend at work who finished Dragon Age Origins 3 times on the PC. He was so looking forward to playing Inquisition over the holiday. He walked into BT games to pick up a copy but brokenheartedly found out that PC gamers have to download the game. He lives in a Township and has no internet connection.

Sucks to be a gamer in this day and age.

Are all the PC gamers forced into DRM for Inquisition? Is there no way you can just play the game off of the fcking disc?

I actually had no idea about this. I specifically got Shadow of Mordor hardcopy for two reasons:
      1. It was way cheaper physical copy (go figure)
      2. I don’t want to download 40Gig.

I doubt it. If anything they should scrap the term Console because they are not, they are on-line PC rigs that act as a multi media device.

The PS2 was the last true console.

I truly loved Destiny… But I think it may be just that – past tense (though I hope that’s not the case).

I finally finished Far Cry 4 on Friday (good, fun game. But crumbiest ending in a LONG time… Just a big disappointment! Seriously, I mean wtf?!), so decided to start the Dark Below dlc this weekend… Stopped playing after the first mission – it just didn’t grab me. And honestly didn’t feel like grinding in the normal game (went on patrol for 15 minutes and just decided this is not for me…). So I just stopped the game… Carried on and finished “The Walking Dead – Season 1” again instead.

Either I’m not feeling it anymore or I just REALLY didn’t feel like playing Destiny this weekend… Will try again later – but not for a while. Now I’m looking forward to finally playing “The Walking Dead – Season 2” and getting properly stuck into Dragon Age: Inquisition.

The new strikes (just two of them *sigh) is fun. Plus going to level 31 which is quick really helps with the difficulty. I basically do bounties and daily story mission now. Plus I need to get the max faction rank with Eris. It is still as repetitive as always, but I cant stop playing. I do all this every day just for the strange coins and ascendant materials in case I ever do the raid. Plus I do it to build up a stockpile for the next DLC.
Other than that I’m playing black flag for the first time. Not so much assassination but more swash buckling which is really fun.

I was doing the same for months – doing the daily missions and bounties everyday to get materials and upgrade the kit I got from finishing the Raid. Even wanted to start from scratch with a new character… And I’ve honestly loved every second I’ve spent with Destiny (although more than a little annoyed by some of the limitations that Bungie impose, which I feel are ridiculous and don’t make sense…). But this weekend was the first time that I played and literally thought “I have more interesting things to play… I just don’t feel like the grind”.

Like I mentioned, hopefully this is just fleeting. A part of me really wants to get back into it (and try the new Raid). But maybe I’m all “Destiny’ed out” for now. Will definitely come back to it to finish the dlc (apparently it’s no more than 2 or so hours of extra gameplay, when it comes to story missions). Just gonna enjoy my other, story-based games for now… Me thinks I needs a good story, Precious! 🙂

I was never a top down fan having never grown up on PCs and only got halfway into origins before loosing interest.

I just finished Inquisition on 105hours at level 25. I am now on my second play. IT smells of Mass Effect 3 all over. That is a good thing 🙂

I play on EASY, casual hack and slash with a fat bastard sword that sheens in the sunlight covered in speckled blood. HELL, I am starting to sound like Morrigan now 🙂

Lolol don’t get me wrong, I understand why people like it. The combat was just too dull for me and the story and characters felt like fluff. But the amount of choice is staggering though. Which is what most people loved

I prefer this combat to that of Skyrim. You fell as though you are doing something. You just need to find a good balance in managing team status.

Or just play on Easy and do a Shadow of Mordor by running around as a tank.

I’m playing Kingdoms of Amalur at the moment (at the recommendation from my fiancé) and I must say that the combat system in that game is excellent. It can be challenging, but it can be just as relaxed.
SoM had some nice combat as well, and of course Witcher is just pure awesome.

I found that got a bit dull, think the game as a whole is just too long for its own good. After a while it just got too easy & repetitive. Although that could have something to do with me doing the DLCs half way through the main game & then being overpowered when I went back to the main campaign.

            December 22, 2014 at 10:42

I did a mission of the one DLC yesterday…maybe the same might happen to me now. :/
I can see how it can get repetitive, I really can. So far though it’s a nice change from what I’ve playing lately though, which is probably why I’m loving it so much.
It’s so light and in a way very typical old school RPG at times – a nice change from all the dark games I’ve been playing recently. Call it my Christmas spirit game 🙂

Mount & Blade Warband got the best combat mechanics for a fantasy game where you have to fight with swords etc.

I wish someone would just implement that in a proper RPG

Always play Narrative games on Easy first, learn the mechanics, the AI, and improve the pacing. Thats what I did. I went up each level on each play.

Grounded Mode turned the game into a totally different beast.

When I first started the game it took me awhile to figure out that you can totally ignore your NPCs, they can make as much noise and walk into line of site of the enemy as possible but it is actually a single player game that has extra characters move along with you. Like Bioshock Infinite, Ellie is just there for Narrative.

ENJOY, the game will become part of your soul when you nail it.

          It is Resident Evil 4.

Try sneaking. On Grounded Mode you are forced to sneak as you are only allowed 2rounds in the gun.

Trial by Death, It would take me and hour just to find a good sneaking routing for an area like the docks, sit and wait and watch the movement patterns, they are always the same.

Or stop smoking the weed and make the most of the 60fps by aiming your reticule at the enemy 😛

All the DLC for the game, which is mostly just skins, will cost you $79. That’s with the bulk of it having a 50% discount. Insanity.

Honestly? This was a shit year in games. Apart from like a few good one’s like Shadow of Mordor, Far Cry 4 and maybe Civ: Beyond Earth, I can’t think of anything that was.. well, new.
I mean, look at the best PS4 game. A remaster. A good remaster, but nevertheless a remaster. But this year did feel like the same old crap with more bullshit excuses from AAA devs for having “not enough power to run 1080p and 60fps”, idiocy from the gaming press all over and STILL NO HALF-LIFE 3. FUCK, ALL WE GOT WAS A SOFT-LAUNCH OF SOURCE 2.

    TL;DR
2014 was a shit year in games. Nothing too memorable. Just the same bullshit with new lighting effects as 2012 and 2013.
