Nordic Games grabs remaining THQ IP…Who?

Nordic

While you’re busy sitting contemplating just how badly Gearbox might destroy Homeworld, take a moment to consider the rest of THQ’s library of properties – including Darksiders and Red Faction – most of which have ended up in the hands of Nordic Games. Wait…who?

They’re not exactly a prolific development or publishing house – though they are the parent company of publishers JoWood, DreamCatcher and The Adventure Company. If you know their name at all, it’s likely because they published the most recent game in the Painkiller series, Painkiller: Hell & Damnation. You might also have seen their logo if you played Alan Wake on PC, as they’d done the publishing duties.

They’re now in charge of most of THQ’s IP that wasn’t moved in the initial auction; properties such as Darksiders, Red Faction and MX vs. ATV  – as well as older ones like Supreme Commander, Frontlines, Stuntman, Juiced, Full Spectrum Warrior, Destroy All Humans “and more.” All of that for just for $4.9 million.

If you’re a fan of those franchises, a dash of trepidation and scepticism would be warranted – but it doesn’t seem as though Swedish and Austrian based Nordic Games intends to run them in to the ground. Instead, it seems as though they want to act as mere curators.

“A very important point for us is not to dash into several self-financed multi-million dollar projects right away, but rather to continue our in-depth analysis of all titles and carefully selecting different financing models for developing new instalments of acquired IPs,”  says Nordic boss  Lars Wingefors in a statement.

“In the long term, we either want to cooperate with the original creators or best possible developers in order to work on sequels or additional content for these titles.”

Volition, who worked n Red Faction is now under Koch Media doing Saint’s Row, while Vigil has essentially reformed under the “Crytek USA” name – so it’s possible that development could go back them. It’s also possible they could end up in the hands of more suitable developers. Nordic is seeking gamer input on the future of the franchises it picked up, by way of their forums.

No word on who’s picked up that red hot uDraw licence though.

If it aint broke… nobody makes any flipping money. Break the shit and fix it again… or leave out that patch for a later date when we bring out the new version and we have a trump card against our competition.

People are paid shit tonnes of money to sit in an office and make pointless changes.

I can’t believe how cheap these IP’s went for! I would have thought a game like Darksiders would be worth alot more than what was paid for it. Anyway, just happy that the franchise is continuing as the games are actually great fun and I loooooved the end of the first title.

Glad Darksiders has finally found someone, hopefully we’ll hear some good news in the future about Fury & Strife.

I really don’t want to get toooooo technical, and it’s not that I have any problem with it, but those chics aint Nordic.

I’m not complaining, because it’s like six ION headers in one.
