Humble Monthly takes the Humble Bundle too far

I love the Humble Bundle, and the concept has been steadily expanding in ways that I really enjoy. Just a couple of weeks ago I bought the Neil Gaiman book bundle, and I keep eyeing the banned book bundle and will probably cave and just buy it. There have been some awesome Humble Bundles over the years, ideal for people who missed out on entire franchises, or for those who don’t quite know which indie titles to pick up. Humble Monthly is the latest evolution, and it isn’t getting the same kind of enthusiastic greeting.

The Humble Monthly is a subscription service much like Loot Crate or any other surprise service. You pay $12 per month and receive some kind of game or games, with 5% going to charity as well.

Hmm, so $12 a month for a “highly curated” selection of games, as compared to the normally curated bundles they’ve been putting together for the last few years? No way to tell if you already have the games that they think you shouldn’t miss out on, perhaps during a Steam sale for even less money? At least there is some charitable contribution, but it feels a bit like a token gesture at this point.

You know, I liked the idea of the Loot Crate or other fun subscription services that bring nice things to my front door. However, so many of them end up being a disappointment. If I can buy the same quantity of cool stuff that I pick out for myself for that amount of money, it doesn’t feel worthwhile. I want to feel like I’m getting greater value for money thanks to the surprise element, not getting stuff that will go to waste anyway.

There might be some cool games on offer some months, but without being able to choose genres of choice, or even decide based on PC requirements or the added DRM of possible UPlay or Origin keys, it just all starts to feel a bit disingenuous to me. Just continue to make cool bundles and let people choose if they’re worth buying.

Yeah I’m not sold on this idea either. I’ve got a lot of games so I wouldn’t be surprised, or very happy, to get a lot of duplicates.

GOG has done a similar style thing a couple of times, where you buy blind and hope for something good – those were much cheaper though, last one was $3 or something.

Buying anything digitally, and PC games, is worthless. You are buying shit with no value. No value at all. You are just wasting money.

I always say that if you going to buy digital, spend as little money as possible because there is no value.

If Humble Monthly was $1, wait that is still too much, if it was R10 maybe then it would be worth the while to buy worthless shit.

    Don’t Support DRM.

Resale value isn’t the only type of value you get from a product.

I found quite a bit of value out of my 100 hours on 7 Days to Die that I bought digitally.
I don’t like DRM, but buying digital is different, and very convenient.

Cheaper than going to the movies and there is significant more enjoyement. If you want to compare rand to rand spent (or dollar to dollar)

Still, they won’t see a sub from me

Good point, even if the content is time limited for a year or something, still cheaper and more value than a movie out.

$1 = roughly R10 (R14 at the moment, but it’s the price difference of 2 chappies). You are such a dolt sometimes.

        $1 is R13.9
        R10 is $.72

If the Humble Monthly was $1 then your comment could stand. But it’s not. The difference is R156.85 and not 2 chappies.

maybe then it would be worth the while to buy worthless shit.” Humble Monthly is not $1 and me saying R10 doesn’t mean that Humble Monthly is 2 chappies cheaper than the amount I said it should be.

I think the way we determine value is not consistent.

One of the digital arguments, such as for Kindle, is that they can switch off your ability to use the content. But you still get the value, you read the book, played the game or whatever. The enjoyment factor is still there and that is hard to quantify. What about seeing a movie? (how much is that now anyway? R90 a ticket?)

I understand your point about holding something and that is why, when I buy digital (which I like doing), it must be cheaper. I have bought technical books digitally for an eighth the price at the bookstore, which suits me, still paying R200 for the ebook, but saving a lot of cash as well.

The sad thing is that digital games (when not on sale) is most of the time more expensive than the physical copies. But many games are only available digitally, which I don’t mind.
I like the digital gaming era. It’s made us able to own 200+ games, which means I’ve experienced so many great titles I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.
The physical copies are reserved for the games I really hold dear.

I don’t buy physical any more tbh. I wait for specials or bundles and I score every time. Plus the boxes take up too much space. I have literally 2 large boxes full of old game boxes. And nothing to do with them, but stash them in my garage.

Two months after it was already down to $20 on BundleStars and it’s now $15.
I’ll admit, that game was definitely not worth that full price.

No, but at half price it really was. I still need to finish that game. But alas, I have the curse of not finishing games. Ever. Doesn’t take away from the fact that it was a great game and worth $20 at the time for sure.

Video games are products. Going to the cinema to watch a movie is not the same as buying a dvd or blu ray.

Going to the cinema is comparable to Let’s Play video games on Youtube.

It’s worthless. When you turn the arcade’s off and close up shop, no games. No servers no games.

The arcade machines has value to the owners and EA has the value of your R14 digital product.

No, I do agree with you. A Video game is product, not a service. I was comparing the enjoyment you get out. some of these games are ones you play for a few hours and then remember fondly. I was comparing that experience to a movie.

Also, why must my house be cluttered with yet more junk? (see my 11 million other posts about my little girl) I want to play a game with little muss and fuss.

And reading books, especially technical ones, is fine electronically.

I say, buy digital but it must be much cheaper and make sense. Buy physical when there is a need to own it, such as a treasured game collection or map or something.

I think the next 10 years are going to, commercially, be very interesting with a big drive toward more technology in all our purchases.

If you go away you need one 200g thing to take with. Not 2 to 4 heavy books.
Sure gaming is different, but if I’m getting a game for R20 that will take me 6 hours to finish and enjoy I’d say it’s money well spent.

No. Buying anything is not worthless. Typically value decreases over time. And some products can gain value over time.

But digital products, all of them, are worthless. No value at all.

You decided what value was over time for yourself. And you’re telling other people to assign that value to how they perceive time. It’s not very hard to call that out when the way I value time is significantly different to the way you do.

And yes. You should not waste your time on people who think terribly different to the way you do and who try to allow for all manner of different perceptions of value. That’s definitely a significant waste of time.

It isn’t a fight against you. It’s a fight against what you represent.

I also have quite a few on Origin. The only bad thing about them is that the C&C games they sold me don’t all work. But otherwise I don’t mind it too much. Sure, the games won’t be played often because I barely ever open Origin, but if I really feel like the game it’s okay.
After Uplay’s new update it is running better and looking more sleek, but the fact remains that it’s still an unnecessary client.

I have some Steam games that don’t work on Windows 7 too. It’s not just Origin that pull that shit. Again, I don’t care if it’s Origin or Steam or Uplay (the amount of games I have on Uplay are a grand total of 3, and they all launch from Steam). If I get a few good games every few months, it’s still worth it. Games like Terraria for instance. Cost me $1 and I’ve lost 403 hours now and counting. Little gems can crop up in bundles like this, and we’re almost guaranteed to not get the AAA crap. So the chance at good games is actually higher. 😀

I absolutely agree with you there. I got some of my best little games from the Humble Store. It’s the place to find those indie gems at a good price.
Think I also got Terraria there, actually. 🙂
I think this monthly bundle is a cool idea. It would suck to get duplicates, of course, but (depending on how many games you have already) you got to take the good with the bad.

          • Dutch Matrix

            October 2, 2015 at 10:57

Who measures what? The fact is, the NSPCA is battling to get donations for food and much needed medicine for animals. And people are willing to piss away $12.00 a month for a few games that they may have, may not want to have or may not be able to play.
All in the hope of getting maybe one game worth playing?
Rather drop off a decent sized bag of dog food at your local animal shelter. They will thank you for it, as well as a few dogs too.
Plus you can feel warm and fuzzy for a bit.

          • SargonTheRebornBatpanda

            October 2, 2015 at 11:01

            1) The fact is, every single major charity is battling *something*. There is no shortage of suffering on the planet. Why dogs?

Effectively I’m asking who decides this? Where is this value derived from? If a dog’s food is worth more than my enjoyment of free time, then why isn’t a cat’s food not also worth that? And if that is the case (I’m not saying it’s not – I’m merely asking who decides here) – then why isn’t a Kangaroo’s food more important? Why isn’t the plight of the Polar Bar attributed the same importance? Why isn’t the state of our local ecosystems? Or the international ecosystems?

            2) Where does it end? Now that we’ve established that there are NUMEROUS causes more worthy than my own why bother to do ANYTHING ELSE BUT advance the causes that all of these charities advance. Why marry? Why have kids? Why eat out at nice places? Why do anything at all? You should conceivable donate every single surplus you have to rid the world of all these ills. No cigarettes. No carbonated beverages. No alcoholic beverages. No anything other than food and the most basic form of nourishing substances.

            October 2, 2015 at 11:26

Look Dude. You clearly only worry about yourself. If putting aside a R150.00 a month to help an animal or two without having a whiny bitch fit about it is too much for you, then don’t.
            It’s simple really.

          • SargonTheRebornBatpanda

            October 2, 2015 at 11:46

You really and completely missed the point there I’m afraid. 🙂

You originally told me to donate money to the NSPCA. You said it was because an abandoned animal needs a bowl of food more than I need a game.

From the continuing series of questions to ascertain the logic of the proposition you put forth, you have somehow gathered that I only care about myself and that I can’t be bothered to put aside R150 a month to help an animal.

Let me simplify it for you.
            1) I already make numerous donations to charities. I am not bound to a single cause. Especially one as narrow minded as being limited to a specific species of animal.
            2) I also play games which help me unwind and enjoy my downtime – which helps me maintain my uptime in order to be able to contribute a little to those causes which I support (when I support them).
            3) They are not mutually exclusive (that means you can actually do both – in the same month).
            4) Lawyered.

            October 2, 2015 at 11:57

No. You are making a mountain of a mole hill. If someone hangs off the edge of a building and yells help, do you help him or give him a 50 page thesis on how your act of kindness will change the timeline forever and cause you to not smoke or drink when you are 98 years old?

          • SargonTheRebornBatpanda

            October 2, 2015 at 12:15

Well the mole hill is a mountain to someone/something. That’s exactly the point is it not? It’s about context and perspective. Which is where my questions were trying to lead you.

In addition, your analogy needs fixing. It is not at all like either saving someone about to fall off a ledge or giving them a 50 page essay. You’re still missing the point. It’s about which person you ought to save right before they fall off a ledge, but there are fifty people about to fall and you’ll only have time to save one more (because you’ve already saved one so far). For you it’s enough to save THAT SPECIFIC ONE (the dog at the NSPCA). I have also saved one (for argument sakes – we are not going to pull out donations and inspect which dick is bigger). You are now telling me to save another (but your choice of who – the dog at the NSPCA) INSTEAD of buying that subscription service. I’m merely asking why none of the other people? And if possible – why not ALL of the other people. These questions would hopefully invoke in you some sort of reflective period in which you would consider how we each choose to value our own lives and the rest of the world.

But instead you throw a fit because I didn’t jump onto your “save a dog at the NSPCA” wagon. Not the reaction I was hoping for. But I accept your right to have any reaction you see fit to have to this.

Definitely, and here’s the kicker, my love for indie games has seriously taken a knock this past year, because (a) most indie devs seem to be annoying and obnoxious primadonas (just look at our local indie devs – there are some really cool people there, but then you have a bunch of asses that really shouldn’t be on twitter) and (b) for every single indie gem, you first have to wade through a humongous pile of manure (in the form of stupid walking simulators to “but I are artistic” shit).

I doubt Fishy would have made FEZ2 even if he never discovered social media (or needed to fuel his ego). My impression is that the success of that game (and the controversy over whether he lifted code and ideas from someone else) would have haunted him during FEZ2’s development, and he would have become gun shy regardless.

The big blowup was just a convenient way to cover up his own insecurities.

Okay. This is kinda silly. We’re saying that a company/group of people that has proven its value TIME and TIME again (by letting YOU decide the split between humble bundle/developer/charity) is not allowed to offer a subscription service? They’re not even allowed to OFFER it? Like you don’t even KNOW what is on the first month yet. FFS. It seems just a LITTLE premature to judge the book by the authors vague outline of what he/she kinda WANTS to write about. But if Raymond E Feist gave me that outline I’d hand him my bloody money. Because the man has won me over with his proven track record.

Additionally, how many of you ACTUALLY give humble bundle large amounts of the money for putting all this shit together? I know I don’t always do it. Maybe they’re struggling to keep the ship on course? Do we know? Maybe we need to SEE some corporate greed before we CITE corporate greed? Perhaps?

Lastly.. if you sign up early you get Legends of Grimrock 2? Which is $24.99 on Steam now? And was only released Oct last year? So it MIGHT be on sale come year end. And it MIGHT be 50% off. Which means you MIGHT get it for $12.48.

Yeah. The arguments some of you have made are sound. I.e. I like a SPECIFIC genre of titles so this wouldn’t be worth it. Alright. Don’t buy it. I’m with you. But it seems unfair to shit on a service before we really know what the service offers. I hardly feel it is fair to say they’ve gone too far or anything.

I’m in awe at his ability to write 2 – 3 books a year. The guy is a literary machine!

Yeah. And at his age. When he came to RSA (last year I think) I went to an hour discussion he had. And then met him afterward. The dude is the friggin most awesome human being I’ve ever met. Like listening to him talk about how it all started, etc, was a friggin dream come true. And you can see why he can pump books out the way he does. He loves the worlds he creates. And he has for decades (in the case of Midkemia). He is as heartbroken as WE are at the events that unfold. Man is a legend.
