FFD: Has the AAA gaming industry stopped innovating?

Innovation! It’s one of the great big buzzwords that that’s bandied about when big blockbuster games are on the horizon. Innovative new mechanics, innovative new story-telling, innovative this and that – but has there been any real innovation?

Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw doesn’t think so. In an article on The Escapist, the vocal games critic and humourist argued that the only real innovation in the AAA games space has been of the graphical persuasion.

“And I don’t know about you but Halo 5 has brought on something of a melancholy for me, as it brings to sharp relief the fact that the triple-A games industry has, on balance now that the dust has settled, gone precisely nowhere for three whole years,” he says.

“Nothing to show for itself but slightly better graphics and an increased fondness for micropayments. And I know damn well that triple-A isn’t everything, that there’s plenty of innovation in the indie circles, but triple-A stubbornly remains the public face of the industry, and the divide between it and independent development didn’t used to be so abysmally, apocalyptically deep.”

He asks a pretty important question. Has there been any long-lasting, worthwhile innovation in the AAA space? In an article with a similar take-away message, Engadget says that “Innovation in the AAA space doesn’t always mean “different.” Sometimes, it just means “more.”

I asked the rest of the staff if innovation actually happens within AAA blockbusters (most of which are sequels anyway!) and it was surprisingly difficult to come up with anything. Shadow of Mordor’s bit of emergent storytelling with its lauded Nemesis system stands out, and Titanfall’s exquisite take on player movement has now been copied by just about every similar game since – but it’s hard to pinpoint innovation that isn’t beyond the technical, or graphical.

That’s not to say there’s a lack of creativity, or great games – just that they’re not quite pushing any boundaries.  Is the AAA space built on nothing but iteration, or is there genuine innovation to be found? Let us know.

Publishers are finding some innovative ways to tack on, and

Innovation in the AAA space is like a new IP in blockbuster movies. Won’t really happen cause it is a risk for the distributor who happens to also fund the system.

A big sounding YES! and no at the same time lol I agree that 90% of AAA games lately feel just like sequels and rehash of the previous version where there is not much progress in a way of game play and story telling. However there are a few that were surprisingly innovation and good for example as much as I did not like Shadow of Mordor but the Nemesis system was something really fresh, new and hopefully get implemented a bit more. Destiny as well for me was a first time I played a shooter on a console that felt so smooth but also it is a first FPS game that was like an MMO! So in my opinion sure majority new AAA games are feeling like same stuff over and over but there are some that are still supprise u now and then just not enough of those games to go around!

I feel that developers think people are to afraid to jump in and invest in a new game. It’s easier for most gamers to take out a lot of money on something they know the “brand name” of.

I don’t know if I would call Destiny innovative, they definitely weren’t the first to take the MMO genre and combine it with the FPS to make a MMOFPS. We had Neocron (released 2002), Planetside (2003), to a degree MAG (2008) and Planetside 2 (2012).

Niether where they the first to take the Action-RPG genre and combine it with FPS (Borderlands as an example here).

So, a fun game I’m sure, but not innovative in my opinion.

I don’t think they’re stopped, just taking much smaller steps. AAA games cost a crap load to make and, like with the blockbuster movie industry, sequels that don’t shake the boat too much are a safer bet. People always cry for innovation, but sometimes what’s innovative just doesn’t work – like with Evolve. Indies can take more risks because the cost of their failure is much less and they need to do different things to stand out from the crowd. AAAs slowly incorporate what indies pioneer.

I don’t think DLC has got much to do with it really, I think it’s become a big reason after the fact. Star Wars Hardline is still selling gangbusters despite being very similar in that regard. Even after the free weekend on Steam where people tried it out, nobody stuck around because it’s just not that fun to play with random people.

Can we blame them though? When games cost millions to make, it becomes harder to take a risk with a game that might or might not resonate with gamers. Even if they want to do something different they’ll slap on MTs, DLC or tacked on MP (With MTs and DLC maps etc lol) to mitigate the risk. The lack of innovation is a direct result of the current gaming environment, but things are slowly changing, and the tides started shifting when big pubs saw the value of indie games.

There is a slow, but steady reemergence of middleware games. Look at Ubisoft releasing Child of light and other smaller titles, or even EA with Yarny. SquareEnix opened up an entirely new studio to develop smaller rpgs like Setsuna too. I believe/hope that if companies can take advantage of a steady release cycle of smaller games, they can manage the risks of bigger AAA games without slapping on MTs and DLC.

Taking Fallout 4 as an example. If you complain about the graphics or the totally optional building system instead of the extremely watered down RPG elements YOU are exactly the reason why AAA games don’t innovate as much anymore. Go back to playing Batman 7 or CoD 15.

Fallout 4 is riding on the fact that Fallout 3 and new Vegas were particularly popular. They are classified as RPG’s so is Fallout 4. Last successful conversion for a series from one genre to another was WoW. C&C renegade tried jumping and failed. Syndicate tried jumping and failed. Remember that recent X-Com horrible piece of crap genre jumper? I did not buy Fallout as an “open world CoD”. Neither did many of the original fans.

You can make the jump from one genre to another but your core fans will almost always have issue with it. Specially since the same devs usually make the leap from one genre to another. If you made a RTS for 10 odd years and then decided you are making a FPS you better damn well get some help from someone who has actual experience with making an FPS.

      Such a good point.

That brings me to one of my major hates with most of today’s games. Every developer, for some unknown reason, just have this need to make every game open world to the determent of the actual gameplay.

There is nothing, for me at least, as off putting as an open world game. I just really don’t find the fact that I can spend 80+ hours on a game, because I can build a base (which doesn’t have anything to do with the game’s story) or go on 700 different side mission, at all fun. It’s distracting and I just end up not playing or finishing the game.

Also, really… who has time to spend 100 hours on one game. There is so many other to also enjoy.

This is why I keep ons saying: Give me Bioshock type games. Linear with one or two moral choices and a story that will break your brain and some fun gameplay elements.

I’m a sucker for open world games because I immerse myself in them and become a part of a different world for weeks.
But this is why we have linear and open-world games…people are very different.

No, they’re hardly innovating. Playing COD after a 5 years hiatus I can say it is still COD. Sure they added classes to MP and gave the SP abilities ripped from Crysis and Bioshock but it’s still the same.

EA ran out of ideas so they played the nostalgia card and released on third of Battlefront. The other third being accessible through a racketeering scheme and the SP not being bothered with at all.

Ubisoft releasing Ass Creed Similar or Same old shit. Can’t be bothered to remember the name. Also with Far cry they’ve done it all so let’s revert to clubs and bow and arrows.

Capcom had it’s corporate way with Resident Evil series and soured so many people that they had to rethink their DLC policies with SF5. Same game essentially with new characters.

Microsoft, They’ve released Sunset Overdrive so that’s enough innovation for one year. Let’s remaster GOW and bring out a new Halo and Forza….. again

Sony has Horizon Dawn, till then they are scraping the PS3 bin looking for thins to remaster.

“Necessity is the mother of invention.” The AAA titles don’t need to innovate as much, because they know they already have a huge market when they pump out a sequel to a best selling game. Even if the sequel sucks, the sheer number of pre-orders alone is going to make them a profit.

Friend of mine who works in book publishing says the same thing: they are petrified of books not selling, so stick to the known, that can be sort of quantified. New authors, who may be brilliant, therefore struggle to get published.

Same reason as games and movies, I think. Money, investor response and all that. Money.

The answer is quite evident, we have COD, AC, Battlefield, NFS, with every iteration of AAA titles comes more of the same, supplying investors with a steady stream of income. Innovation is also a hard topic to define, it could be major leaps ahead and people won’t like it because “It’s not the same as any other game from this franchise” or “It’s too different, I didn’t like it”, I think the MGS open world stealth was innovating, but was hampered by having to enter the same area fifty hundred and one million seven hundred and onety eleven times to do an extraction of a guy that’s slightly differently paced.

When we draw the comparison to the third iteration of The Witcher, the storytelling was done with amazing detail, whether it be main or side quests, every one was memorable and no matter how you look at it, that is innovation, carrying the same level of quality through everything and creating a homogeneous layout for every story is brilliant, but from a gameplay perspective not much changed, yes they improved mechanics and fighting, a great leap from TW2, but nothing innovative.

I don’t think W3’s thing was to be innovative, it was to be seamless in blending all the good elements together. Which in itself is damn rare in an open world game.

Destiny did innovate quite a lot and had me hooked for a looong time. Year two started off great, the story was better, the quest steps was a nice touch and then I hit a wall where they once again tried to force me to play with others. There is a lot of things in life I can handle, but I hate being forced to do things! Why they don’t just open Weekly Nightfall strikes and Prison of Elders to matchmaking goes beyond me. Both need about 0% of voice cooperation. If you see the other two dudes dying: run and hide or revive if possible. Destiny has lost me as a player and I defended it for over a year non stop…

I’m a huge SW fan, so usually I would jump to be able to pilot an AT-AT, but this just doesn’t have that much appeal to me.
